both of which don't involve tunneling through mountains
A lot of people seem to forget that we have massive mountain ranges dividing the country into at least 3 separate sections, even though we already have trains going through parts of them legally it’s a lot harder to blow up mountains now. That’s not even considering land acquisition, which would be a nightmare in modern day politics and probably still would have been back then if it wasn’t for the civil war greatly expanding poverty and federal power in the south.

Most of the stuff in the west is federally owned, so even if you want to build a track, prepare for decades of negotiation, not mention states that are politically opposed to eachother that can't even agree on water rights.

And even with that out of the way you'll have "activists" glueing themselves to stones or whatever because muj stolen land or because of some kind of shrubbery that only grows right there

When roads were starting to develop, the US had to choose whether to allocate resources towards roads or rails. Roads won out and the eventually the interstate highway system was born and expanded. Nowadays, most of the rails are owned and maintained by private (read: freight) companies. Thus, they have priority over which trains pass through, so if you're on a trans-continental train and wonder why your train suddenly stops to let a slower freight train pass by, that's why. Intracity passenger train lines are highly unprofitable to run unless you build them between large cities with a demand large enough to sustain business. For comparison's sake, in NYC, the 2022 MTA Operating budget is projected to be $19.379 billion, with 58% of that allocated towards workers/labor.

Current rail prices between major cities are more expensive than a direct flight and more often than not take either the same amount of time when you consider having to do the extraneous airport stuff (driving to the airport, going through security, etc.) or longer, since you can bet they'll average around 60-65 mph. High speed rail would need huge amounts of flat, stable land to build on with enough room for gentle curves.

Even if we could bore through mountains and disregard laws regarding land possessed by the state and Indian reservations, not all land is suitable for building trains on. Some land exists on heavy flood risk areas, some land is swampy or exists on wetlands (as is the case with the mid to south east coast areas).

Freight rail makes sense, we have a huge landmass, the base system has been there since the 1800's, and it transports huge amounts of cargo to a set amount of stops, hense making it efficient. While with a single person, you have highways to cross the states, or a plane, both of which don't involve tunneling through mountains.
Huge amounts of cargo is where freight rail makes the most sense. If you notice freight trains usually have (not always) have some large amount of single cargo--tank cars full of oil or oil byproducts, giant train loads of gravel, etc.

The long loads make freight profitable, and it's why a lot of smaller, super-specialized cargo doesn't make as much sense; the spur rails have been stripped out in most of the smaller warehouses and many of the lumberyards.

Finally, I knew other people noticed the inundation of city design/transport videos parroting the exact same anti private transportation pro hive architecture line as if they were churned out in the same sweatshop.

Typical Youtube City Design/transport Video: "Here's 10 ways utopianist urban designers fucked up everything in your life. Now to fix it all just trust this solution from modern day utopianist urban designers and random youtuber wannabe armchair utopianist urban designers.

The US is too big. We can't just build rail all across it. View attachment 4252783
What are you even on about? For all the shit urbanists rail on about rail across cities is probably one of the least objectionable. Alright look, I'll make this easy for you. It's not that we can't build trains everywhere, it's just that we have absolutely no interest in building and funding public transit networks that give human wreckage access to our nice safe suburbs. Anybody with a modicum of common sense realizes the major cities are essentially containment zones for the human filth and should have no intent of changing that if they know what's good for them. If we capped immigration from shithole countries to 0, brought back forced institutionalization and public executions for criminals I would jump on public transit in a hot second. But we live in a world where degeneracy is not only tolerated but outright celebrated, so here we are. I'm not gonna get stabbed by joggers on a bus because you can't get over your autistic fascination with choo-choo trains.

Damn those socioeconomic factors that force such an inspiring future doctorlawyerengineer into doing this .

Because it is us vs them. Us vs the cities. People have made good points here, ramming train lines through the US in this day and age is not only unfeasible, but there is a severe amount of crime. It may not be the wild west days with Indian's raiding train cars, but people get robbed, groped, and even killed on public transportation, though mostly in inner cities.

The road system is great; if you got a CCW permit that's accepted across multiple states, carry a pistol in the glove box, a little 22 rifle in the trunk for survival, and bam, even if you break down, you can protect yourself and hunt for food. Meanwhile on a train crossing multiple states, if the train gets stopped for a reason and you have to stay stuck on it for days, the chances of getting robbed are high, and personally I don't want to be trapped in a tube with randoms for more than 12 hours if I have valuables, another pro of a car, you're able to defend and carry stuff across the states way easier.

Are you a boomer from niggermania?

You wanted an explanation, I gave you one. There are undesirable elements on public transit, the state won't put them in check and will often punish me if I put them in check myself. That isn't "HURR HURR CONSERVATARD RAYCISS", that's just people engaging in basic self-preservation. Why should I be expected to regularly interact with people that want to kill me and shove my body into a ditch?
