I am almost sure he went to shenzhen as some kind of tech worker - there’s all kinds of westerners out there supervising production of stuff for western companies, or getting their own gadget ideas turned into reality. Quite often factories are even owned and run by Anglos.
Reasoning for that is if you look at some of the things “Naomi” makes, it’s not even slightly maker-style. Everything has the air of over-built, money-no-object construction that is familiar if you look at equipment used in factories and production lines. Check out the dog dryer, the dog treadmill etc. all big chunks of machined aluminium, catalog transmission hardware. Expensive stuff but it’s what you use when you’re a high-dollar-per-hour engineer.
Makers don’t typically have access to that kind of stuff, nor the industrial attitude of the throwing money at a problem - they tend to be self taught, they 3D print everything and come up with their own solutions, which are often ingenious but rarely look “professional” as such. Especially developing world ones.
My guess would be that Naomi was the sort of “glue LEDs onto things” maker, and met Timaz at some expo or maker faire. Or she was a factory worker, even more likely.
Yup. Real world inventions are _boring_ and have extremely limited applications.

I stand by the assertion that 'Naomi' is a product for a marketing machine.
The narrative was flipped on her 'features'. Old school US and Asian geeks WERE the thirstiest MFs on the planet, b/c they spend 14+ hrs a day staring at computers or manufacturing equipment. Only the corporate and marketing/sales mimbos get to spend 7hrs in the office, and then get drinks with bitches.
Her 'features' were to attract attention for the nerds.
Then CY happened in the West. Huge teats and a small waist became fat-shaming. Feminism became TERF, Chinese racism and intolerance were exposed. All bad looks.
So the 'Naomi' narrative was altered for the Current Year.
"I'm not intolerant! I'm GAY! (don't ask about the Uyghurs)."
"MY BODY/MY CHOICE (ignore the CCP's past mandatory abortion programs)"
The 'Naomi' personality was originally meant as a bombshell marketing tool, but is now trying to be awkwardly retooled for the Current Year progressive sensibilities and popularisms.
Like all Chinese tools - 'Naomi' is an outdated product made from inferior materials that is poorly suited for her modern application.
But, she is cheap., and Marketing can work for many different customers...
