For a certain type of low tier man, his wife being pregnant is the trigger to become abusive. It's the first time, suddenly, she cannot take care of 100% of his needs, and needs her partner to be emotionally stable when her hormones aren't letting her. Far too many women make the mistake of thinking that getting pregnant with an abusive man will "calm him down" and make him more mature and responsible, not to mention become a more reliable bread winner.
