There are not going to be a bunch of "surprised cis people" because sex chromosome abnormalities are vanishingly rare and when they do exist they are almost always diagnosed early (since they usually affect your appearance and cause problems like infertility). The only exceptions there might be weird syndromes like XYY that often don't have too many obvious symptoms, but also don't affect sexual development.

"Nobody knows what their chromosomes are" has become this strange ubiquitous TRA talking point because they all think chromosomes are some quirky meaningless attribute, rather than the literal building and maintenance instructions for the human body.

Background on the situation I posted in the news megathread at the weekend:

I don't claim to be an expert on the UK like Tony apparently does but it would not ever strike me that Parliament telling Scotland "no" would be something "unprecedented" nor rising to a threat to democracy.

There's also the amusing part where what Tony wants here (a lower level government establishing distinct policy) is the inverse of what he wants in the United States in terms of abortion but is somewhat more in line with his desire for certain states to start establishing "sanctuary" for "trans refugees" from criminal prosecution or investigation and then paying them salaries for being trans. (The federal government would quash this first part if that stuff actually meant something, the latter is just Tony being Tony.)

The difference here is that a big part of the Scottish government's argument in favour of the Gender Recognition Reform Bill is that it's just an administrative change to make life easier for trans-identifying people, that a Gender Recognition Certificate is "just a piece of paper", and MSPs seem to have genuinely believed that.

Unfortunately that's not the legal situation: changing the criteria for granting a Gender Recognition Certificate has an effect on the law regarding sex discrimination and single-sex services, in the Equality Act 2010. MurrayBlackburnMackenzie (archive) and Sex Matters (PDF, also attached) have both written extensively about this. This is also the reason cited by Alister Jack, the Scottish Secretary (a UK government position):

(Turns out the Equality Act 2010 only applies in Great Britain, not Northern Ireland.)

If there were any actual reasoning going on here, every news network, college and corporation going would be accused of terrorism.
