- the separatists are Russia backed and desired unification with Russia

Those cities are enemy cities until they are liberated from the Russian occupier and the Ukrainian flag is on all relevant institutions, which will answer to Kiev, not Moscow.

I get it you are frustrated, but we all are. It's obvious that Ukraine doesn't plan to give up that land. They lost thousands of lives and half the country is in ruins, the other half is severely affected. It's a price they are willing to pay.
