Since former eastern bloc including satellite states many former satellite states have 10-25% ethnic due to migration of russian workers during CCCPs.
Crimea and coast to sea Azov has been a propaganda tool dating back to Catherine the Great.
Occupying and holding crimea is a matter of national pride if anything.

"Men are being recruited in the country at war" is as newsworthy as "sun has risen this morning".
But now that I think about it, it might be useful for Ukrainians here, if there's any (though I'm sure they've known before any of us).
I see no reason for someone to participate in the war against their will, even when there's a reasonable expectation they would since their home is being invaded. It's their life, after all, and we only get one. So I hope everyone who doesn't feel like it's their duty manages to avoid it.
It's a terrible position to be in, and I will always blame Russia for it, or more precisely Putin and his regime, none of this would've been happening otherwise. I don't blame Ukraine for resisting subjugation like you do, it's inconceivable to me. Maybe if I was a gigabrain who thinks in geopolitical abstracts like you guys, I would. But alas, I'm just a mere human.
A bit of a tangent, but as you're probably aware, way back in the day pagans didn't adopt monotheistic religions because they had a change of heart. It was a pragmatic choice for the sake of protection provided by the state converting them from other entities that might seek to enslave them.
Now that I think about it, that's sort of what Ukraine was doing with EU/NATO. I was always convinced that here in Russia it would be extremely unlikely for me to ever face mobilization, because no one would be crazy enough to invade a nuclear superpower. Ironically, we end up facing it because Russia invaded someone who wasn't, exactly because they were unprotected. And we only have Putin to thank for it. NATO forcing his hand is a cope on par with systemic racism being the reason why niggers in US can't stop killing each other and everyone else.
