The timing is a bit off....

Most Madonna fans pinpoint Madonna's mid-life crisis starting in 1999; after mellowing out, having a kid, and getting into Kabbalah and settling down, she got picked to do the theme song for Austin Powers 2. The film had a time travel plot and for the song (Beautiful Stranger), Madonna wanted the video to be Michael Meyers, as Austin Powers, chasing her character (a spy) through different time periods that would let Madonna revisit/dress up in her past personas/outfits and reenact bits from her previous videos but with Meyers involved.

The director for the video was Brett Ratner, who was coming off of the HUGE success of Rush Hour and had been headhunted to direct the video by the studio putting out AP2, since the Madonna song was also the lead single for the soundtrack album for AP2. Ratner shot this idea of Madonna's down and shot it down HARD. As in Ratner having the HUGE balls to say Madonna was "too old to dress up like she did in her past videos". Madonna objected HARD but Ratner got his way; the only concession was that Ratner was told to make Madonna look like a sex symbol in the video to appease her after he pissed her off telling her off like that about being "too old".

Madonna never forgave Ratner or forgot what he told her; causing her to backslide like she did regarding her new "mature" direction and why she went back to a more sexy/sex kitten persona for Music and her other works going forward.

You have a source for that? Because I remember at the time that Mike Meyers had wanted that in the video but it would take too long and there were scheduling conflicts.

The worst thing is that Miley's career WAS doing ok at the time before she went turbo whore. She had a decent amount of street cred as a singer and unlike other teen teenybop singers, Miley had a rather well loved public image/standing in so far as Hannah Montana not having a huge hatedom and that she wasn't having to deal with that as a handicap with people.

Miley was pretty much set for life, both in terms of having a fanbase that would support her, connections that would ensure she could dip in and out of acting between albums, and money that would keep her in comfort for the rest of her life. She basically threw it all away and did so in a way that probably did more to red pill people about modern day MKUltra sex kitten slavery and the sort of systematic abuse of teenage actresses on kid show networks causing them to melt down in public fashion in graphic fashion, than anything else going on in hollywood.

Lol, you make it sound like she's lying in a gutter somewhere. She's doing just fine. A quick look just now told me she's worth $160M, her new song was #1 on iTunes yesterday*, and she was in Forbes' 30 under 30 last year. I hated that dumb tongue and twerk look/act, but that album (Bangerz) was huge. That tacky tour made $69M for 78 shows, 7 years ago.

Not really a "fan," though I saw the show a bunch, as my kids liked it when they were little, so I've paid some attention. I think she has a great voice and it's really versatile (so much so that she can seem kind of aimless in style and she's been experimenting the last few years), but her biggest commercial success stuff is going to be the big pop-party stuff, or spinning out catchy enough stuff to hit #1 for a minute but not super- unique.

It's a decent, easy-going pop/dance tune with a disco vibe with kind of standard "I'll be fine without you" (sorry, Liam) lyrics, and video is "girl in her amazing house dancing around and taking care of herself, alone/relatable." Pretty banal, but not annoying song. And the refrain/instrumentation has stayed in my head for the 10 minutes since, so I guess that qualifies as catchy.
