I'm pretty sure the old school ones were extremely painful, but these days it's no worse than any vaccine. The main drawback is how goddamn many of them are in a series.I've heard that rabies shots are very painful, is this true? We don't have rabies in my country, although we do have a closely related bat lyssavirus.
Also, wouldn't an emergency rabies vaccine be covered by Medicade, or some similar low income program in the US?
It still beats the alternative. Fun fact: rabies can have an asymptomatic incubation period of a year or more!
I had a bat in the house overnight several years ago. It's recommended that anyone who has slept in a room with a bat receive the rabies series, as bats are a common vector and their bites can easily go unnoticed. Both of my fully vaccinated cats were useless, by the way. One of them was like, "Excuse me, madam, but there's a foul vermin afoot, please dispose of it", and the other was just like, "Durrrr!" I wound up catching the bat and releasing it, which is not recommended.
I called the county public health department and the woman had no clue what I was talking about. No idea about bats as a rabies vector, no clue about vaccine recommendations. I ended up just ending the call and not getting vaccinated. Not dead yet.
