I remember there being extensive discussions on the Farms about Salah's immigration status several weeks ago when Chantal said he couldn't come to Canada. Info on the net and in the thread was somewhat confusing and contradictory, but IIRC, the consensus was along these lines:
Salah visited Thailand in 2017. At that time he had a valid Syrian passport. He also had a valid work visa issued by the Kuwaiti government. However, in 2018 the Kuwaiti government stopped issuing and renewing work visas to Syrians, thus rendering most Syrians illegal residents. If they leave Kuwait, they won't be allowed back in the country because they're not citizens or legal residents.
Additionally, Salah's Syrian passport has expired. Syrian passports are normally issued for 6 years. But if you're a male eligible for compulsory military service, i.e., age 18-42, your passport is only valid for 2 years, with one possible renewal for another 2 years. I think there might also be a postponement if you're a college student. Syrians who live outside of Syria were supposedly allowed to pay a fee in lieu of service, but there were reports that men who paid the fee were conscripted anyway.
Either way, Salah reportedly no longer has a valid passport. If he applies for one, he will immediately be yanked to Syria to serve in the Syrian army. Obviously, he doesn't want that due to the ongoing Syrian war and reports of Syrian soldiers being executed.
He also no longer has a valid work visa in Kuwait, which is why his residency in Kuwait is precarious, and why most Syrians lay low to avoid being deported for often minor transgressions such as traffic violations or complaining about the weather on social media.
There was also conflicting info about where Salah was born. I think Chantal said he was born in Kuwait, but someone uncovered a Facebook post where he said he was born in Syria, and moved to Kuwait in 2011. So Idk. I also don't understand how Salah can travel without a passport to Maldives. Perhaps the Kuwaiti government issues some type of travel document for illegal residents who want to leave Kuwait, but again, if they leave Kuwait, they can't re-enter.
Anyway, that's my recollection of why Salah can't travel to Canada. However, if my memory is wrong and someone has more accurate info, please correct me. I don't want to clog up the thread with erroneous info.
