President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

They used to be.... but decades of Russian cocksucking & ass-fucking from their neighbors has given them a decidedly slavic bent.
Strictly speaking, cocksucking and ass-fucking do not affect a nation's genetics.

Russian propagandist takes bullet to the knee on livestream near Bakhmut.
Music to my ears. I hate propagandists far more than any regular soldier, these pieces of shit chose this, they perpetuate lies allowing wars to happen, justifying atrocities, fucking scum.
Is she a known propagandist, as opposed to a rando reporter? In Russia this may be hair-splitting. But I see a difference between the likes of Vladimir Solovyov and Margarita Simonyan who are on TV hawking Kremlin BS every day, and some grunt journalist walking the front lines reporting what she sees with a token dash of pro-Russia commentary.

Yes, Solovyov loves sunning himself in Italy, particularly Venice, and the most danger Simonyan is in is crossing the road going between cockail parties. Silly blond girl was at least in somewhere dangerous.

2) Fair enough but Armenians aren't actually Slavs, they are closer to Iranians IIRC.
Just say "Russian", sheesh. Being Russian is not synonymous with being a slav. It's an incoherent multinational group with a significant minority of mongoloids/asians, afflicted by identity crisis that makes them hurt themselves in confusion. Many Russians wouldn't even be able to tell you what it means to be one.
Armenians haven't been part of Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union, and have a long, proud, pre-Russian history. Their language isn't Slavic and they don't even follow the Orthodox Church like (non-Polish) Slavs do, but their own church, the Armenian Apostolic Church. In fact, they were the first nation to convert completely to Christianity and make it the state religion. The only reason they are close to Russia now is because they are right next door to 1) Turkey, whose predecessor committed the Armenian Genocide and who still control lands that were historically Armenian, thus the Armenians hate them with a passion, and 2) Azerbaijan, who are pro-Turkey (and also Turks, if I remember correctly), and who want territory currently occupied by Armenia.
Except Russia has taken all those genetic variations and turned them into slavs by culture if not genetics. Like what what happened to the Georgian. Sort of how Gypsies have Indian genes in their genome, but its been largely eradicated and the only thing that survives is the street shitting.

The Armenians had a rich cultural hertiage then Islam happened, and after about a century reprieve, are back to getting genocided by the Turks.

Look it was random shitpost to shit on the general shared mentality of the ex-soviet satellites as shiftless triffling thieving incompetent autocrats, not to refect actual cultural histories.

Strictly speaking, cocksucking and ass-fucking do not affect a nation's genetics.
You just need to do it harder.

Baltic countries' foreign ministers call on Germany to immediately deliver Leopard tanks to Ukraine. "This is needed to stop Russian aggression, help Ukraine and restore peace in Europe quickly," said Latvian FM Edgars Rinkevics on behalf of Lithuanian and Estonian FMs.
God, imagine being such a failure of a Germany the Baltic nations of all people feel free to make demands of you.

Ukraine war: Russian train collected weapons from North Korea for Wagner mercenaries, US says

I guess Russia technically isn't using Nork weapons if they're going to their totally-just-PMC forces in Wagner.

"Freedom for the Leopards!" A massive demonstration took place in #Berlin in front of the office of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The protesters demanded permission to supply Leopard tanks to #Ukraine.
Between this and the Balts seems like pressure is really heating up on the Germans to do something.

Ukraine's ambassador to the UK: Ukraine to start training on Challenger tanks soon. "Heavy artillery systems crews are already training and tankers will arrive soon," Ukraine's ambassador to the U.K. Vadym Prystaiko told Radio Free Europe on Jan. 20.
Might be just bullshit since its coming from the Ukrainian government, but I doubt it for something this big.

U.S. officials advise Ukraine to wait on offensive, official says

Ukraine shooting its load before everything is in place would just lead to a disaster like what's happened to Russia. To quote an old Spartan general, "If we begin the war in haste, we'll have many delays before we end it owing to our lack of preparation." The fact this war is even happening is the perfect example of that quote becoming reality.

US designates Russian mercenary group Wagner, as a "significant transnational criminal organization" - allowing for additional avenues to squeeze their operations around the world, increase sanctions

Seems to me that Ukraine is going to run into serious manpower shortages sooner than later.

Realistically Ukraine is down to approximately a 20M total population (with less than half of that being males and less again being males within military age range). As Ukraine in 2022 was ~40M. They lost >10% from people simply fleeing to USA and West Europe and the 12M or so in the Eastern LNR/DPR regions that are now in the Russian Federation are no longer as readily available as a conscription pool.

The one thing that NATO and Western forces cannot provide to Ukraine is more bodies to feed the meatgrinder. By comparison, Russia does not remotely have this particular problem. Posts around here about lol Russia mobilizing tens of thousands of prisoners! Yeah, well Ukraine WISHES they could do that.

Sure the West sends PMCs and shit but that has limitations.

I mean, at this point, its downright embarrassing how much Germany is stalling. There's being a ditherer, and then there's being a downright obstructive asshat.
Perhaps somehow wanted to be a closeted Schroeder (fmr Bundeskanzler and Putin gimp and slaveboy) but again it seems to be a consensus minded utter ditherer.

You're not wrong but you also are.

Firstly you are vastly over estimating the Donbros population. tl;dr there has been a civil war for the past 8 years. Lots of people who were not on the Donbros side no longer reside in the area but still list as an official residence. No one has gotten a good census after 2014 AFAIK.

Second, lets put things in perspective. For ease of math and splitting the difference, lets just say that Ukraine has a population of 30,000,000. The general number of dead for Ukraine after nearly seems to be around 30,000 which is about one tenth of one percent of the population. Lets be generous and use numbers for easy math, and assume between now and the anniversary of the invasion, Ukraine's combat loses go to 60,000. That's one fifth of one percent of the population.

If the population is dedicated, its not even close to breaking.
To give you an idea of what we're talking about, Nazi Germany's population in WWII was about 80 million. Dead and POWs are are about 5.5 million, +- a million. We'll discount foreign volunteers, and go with 5 million for an easy to math number of about 6%. That is, at current rates and assuming no population bump, Ukraine could go for 30 years before they have Germany-like collapse.

To put perspective on that perspective:
Even realtively minor hits to population numbers cause huge disruptions. The spanish flu had a total fatality rate of about 5% and it caused entire towns in eastern europe & central asia to simply stop existing.
At the start of WWII The UK had about ~48 million people, and total war dead (including civilians) was around 450,000 or about 1% of the total population.
Now TBCF they had just fought WWI less than 20 years before and had lost about 1% then too.
But think about the utter wreck that was Britain in the 1950s with a 1% population loss.

Perhaps somehow wanted to be a closeted Schroeder (fmr Bundeszanzler and Putin gimp and slaveboy) but again it seems to be a consensus minded utter ditherer.
He just might be despite being from West Germany.

Why the fuck can't these Germans help themselves from electing extreme liberal communist Russian dick riders?

So he's a tankie. I'm as unsurprised as it gets.
A large proportion of Western elites were Trotskyites or just plain Soviet ball washers, because, as I said before, they fucking seethingly hate their homelands, have no sense of ethnic solidarity. The pattern is always the same. West is colonial and bad. USSR is progressive. Look at how many Western crimes. USSR had to do what it did, because West pushed it to and bullied it.
When it became unfashionable, many of these fucks became neocons, seething against peoples that were socially conservative or threatened muh only democracy in the Middle East etc., but they never let go of their internationalist principles. I assume Scholtz failed that transition some lmao.

The US is angry with Scholz

The White House reported to the Chancellery with unusual sharpness: Washington is apparently particularly upset that the federal government has publicly set conditions for the delivery of "Leopard" tanks to Ukraine.

Germany's allies in NATO have reacted with open incomprehension or barely concealed anger to Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision not to pledge Leopard tanks for Ukraine for the time being. The tone in the US government was particularly sharp, with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin trying in vain on Thursday in Berlin and on Friday in Ramstein to obtain a commitment to supply Leopard-2. This is not just about a concrete German contribution with battle tanks from the arsenal of the Bundeswehr, but above all about the export release that Berlin has to grant under the German arms export rules for tanks that have already been delivered abroad.

According to information from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the refusal from Berlin led to violent reactions in Washington. According to information from American government circles, Secretary of Defense Austin described the course of his talks in Berlin in an internal report. A meeting with the Chancellor's Minister, Wolfgang Schmidt, was of particular importance. After Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had just taken office and the arms export decision was always made in the Chancellery and by Scholz himself, Schmidt is considered a key figure for the German position.

Lloyd Austin, who stayed in the Chancellor's office longer than planned, is said to have gotten into a heated argument with Schmidt. The encounter was "tense". The American side has been emphasizing since October that there can be no connection between US tank deliveries and the Leopard decision. In addition, the USA supplied armaments in far larger quantities than Germany and the other European allies. These include new types of mini-bombs that can be used with a longer range and could hit Russian depots in Crimea, for example. There is therefore no absolute parallelism of the deliveries.

Nevertheless, the federal government repeatedly cites as a central argument that there could only be German tanks if the USA would also deliver their Abrams M1 main battle tank. Austin pointed out that laying and operating the Abrams would be too expensive and tedious. Apparently, unlike in the Middle East, the US no longer maintains tank depots in Europe. In a transfer exercise last year, the rapid transport of heavy weapons across the Atlantic was tested.

In the US administration, the protest is described as violent

The information that the federal government publicly imposed conditions for the supply of Leopards to the United States before the Ramstein meeting caused particular irritation in Washington. The SZ had reported on this. Austin received the information on the way to Berlin.

The White House intervened in the Chancellery with unusual severity. According to SZ information, security adviser Jake Sullivan called Scholz's foreign policy adviser, Jens Plötner, with whom he actually has a friendly relationship. In the US administration, the protest is described as violent. The "Riot Act" was read out. The Anglo-Saxon idiom refers to an English law of 1715 in which King George I threatened insurgents and rioters with the death penalty. In diplomatic language, the term is now used for a particularly harsh confrontation.

Other European countries made no secret of their anger at Berlin. The foreign ministers of the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania wrote in a joint statement that Germany has a special responsibility. An adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote that the federal government's indecisiveness "only kills more of our people." Selensky himself also increased the pressure and spoke in his video message of the time pressure that now prevails.

Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov announced that training of Ukrainian soldiers on Leopard tanks would already begin in Poland. But he was optimistic that Germany would make a decision. Poland had threatened to deliver Leopard tanks from its own stocks to Ukraine without German approval. However, it is considered unlikely that the tanks can be operated without permanent logistical support for maintenance and spare parts, for example from the German manufacturer.

I actually feel somewhat bad for those guys if they have to go into combat with nork weapons. They have a pretty bad reputation from all the info I've ever seen on them. For example when the norks shelled that south Korean island around a decade or so ago, something in the neighborhood of 30% of shells fired were duds.

Apparently the North Korean AK type rifles and MGs recovered in Vietnam and Iraq (who captured them from Iran) are some of the worst quality AK/PKM builds out there. We also lifted a Koksan artllery piece from Iraq (who also captured it from Iran) but any tests or observations haven't been published.

In an ideal world, this would make it easier for the US to do the right thing and designate it a terrorist, not criminal group, and bomb it to pieces
Haven't they already? I remember there being voting on that recently or something.
And yeah, PMCs are illegal in Russia, but no one really cares - anything is legal if you're the government, laws are for serfs.

Learned that Wagner PMC is/should be illegal in Russia.
In an ideal world, this would make it easier for the US to do the right thing and designate it a terrorist, not criminal group, and bomb it to pieces.
There is already precedent in Syria, so no big deal.
Yes, and Shoigu the shaman has his own PMC called Patriot.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu’s Patriot Private Military Company (PMC), which is competing with Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner PMC, has been spotted near Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast.

Source: Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesman for the Eastern grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during the national joint 24/7 newscast

Quote: "In particular, in the area of Stepne on the Vuhledar front, we have noticed that in addition to Wagner PMC, Patriot PMC, affiliated with the current Russian Defence Minister Shoigu, has appeared. Obviously, they are pulling up all combat capabilities to achieve at least some results."

Details: Cherevatyi, commenting on rumours of a conflict between Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner PMC and Sergei Shoigu’s Patriot PMC, has called them competitive. At the same time, they are in different "theatres of war". In his opinion, there is no direct interaction between them.

Background:

In November, the Ukrainian Resistance reported that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner PMC, is strengthening his position in Russia and wants to punish Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu for the defeats of the Russian forces on the battlefield in Ukraine. The National Resistance Center reports that Prigozhin blames Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces, for the failures on the front.

It does give a good sense of what Russia is given how it is using something illegal under its own laws to wage that cruel war. Now Patriot PMC might be more about gathering plants for Shoigu's potions.

Maybe buy better tanks next time?
