President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Man the Turks are such shitters. One one hand they sell equipment to Ukraine and bottleneck the black sea fleet from gaining reinforcements from the Russian sister fleets but on the other hand they pull this bullshit. The glowies really need to turn the screws on king roach. Maybe they can release those F-16s they've been trying to buy or release the F-35s on the condition they surrender their S-400s to the US.
Elections coming, Erdogan simply wants to preserve his autocracy, and they basically have the same national ideology as Russia and imperial nostalgia, so from their perspective these moves make sense. The Kurds are obnoxious and annoying and sperg out all the time, destabilizing Turkey and making it focus inwards instead of outwards like Erdogan wants. So why not use these two North EU countries that suddenly remembered that Russia exists, to gain something against Kurds and for Turkey. Since these parts of the EU are socdem shitlib paradises that think of Erdogan as an authoritarian monster, they're slow to oblige, as it means they get to shit on an already vulnerable minority group they are so proud of sheltering and protecting.
America is distant and these European machinations are barely mentioned even in their secret (lol) diplomatic cables, and by the time they reach the US they get a "meh" reception, just more chimpouts and satellite countries not playing nice. Sure counterbalancing Russia's influence in the area is nice and having Turkey in NATO was a win for the US, but I'd say the US was highly optimistic about how well Turkey can integrate with Europe and NATO.

The turkroach in charge has said NO to Sweden joining NATO (for now)
why, you may ask?
The reason is that a fat dane burned the Quaran in front of the Turkish embassy, which make the roach really really butthurt.
The fat dane is Ramus Paludan, a far right troll and a real lolcow who is also suspected of being a pedo (he talked to underaged followers of him on discord)
There is also an election in Turkey this year, so the turkroach is trying to get support.

Only thing Erdogan is doing is pissing off his allies, at a time when he's already stoking bullshit by threatening conflict with Greece, another NATO member. The U.S. will let this ride until after the election, then expect Erdogan to keep his end of his promise and vote Sweden and Finland into NATO.

I can't believe the Frogs aren't using the excuse to knock the rust off their M-I factories, but French gonna fronch, eurocucks gonna cuck.

French jets and infantry weapons got a fair distribution (and I want to say they managed to get some frigates to SEA) their armor never took off. I wouldn't be overly surprised to see the Leclerc replacement be some domestic upgrade packages for a foreign chassis.
Iirc, a lot of it has to do with fucky French export laws. As to the armor specifically, their older tanks, the AMX 13 and AMX 30, were pretty widely exported. However France kept upgrading them domestically instead of replacing them, so they lost out on a lot of potential sales to newer products.

Got to read the article on Sweden and Turkey.
It's clear that these are two incompatible views of life and society. One is (on surface) respectful of political dissent, another is expecting that the state will simply forbid protests that inconvenience it.
Sadly, Russians and Turks will be able to easily point out that the West also has sacred cows and that a pro-Nazi protest will be banned in most countries, and that anti-lockdown protests were also treated with severity. Needless to say that anti-Semitism might land you in prison even at 80.
And yet... burning the Quran, which is inherently anti-Muslim, was allowed.
There is a lot of work to be done in the West so there is consistency and continuity on an intellectual field. Cannot allow all of these obvious competitors and even enemies to expoit such weaknesses and hypocrisies that are not even hard to fix.

Adding some additional Lavrov lunacy, who knows, if they insist hard enough, maybe it'll become real.

Lavrov said that the war between the West and Russia is no longer hybrid, but almost real

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that this war had been prepared for a long time

What is happening in Ukraine is no longer a hybrid, but a real war between the West and Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes.
"When we talk about what is happening in Ukraine, we are talking about the fact that this is no longer a hybrid war, but a real one, which the West has been preparing for a long time against Russia, trying to destroy everything Russian - from language to culture, which has been in Ukraine for centuries, and forbidding people to speak their native language," he said at a press conference on Monday following talks with South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor.
"In Ukraine, this is all in the order of things. Both the former president [of Ukraine, Petro] Poroshenko and the current [Vladimir] Zelensky, who were elected under the slogan of establishing peace, instantly immediately after being elected turned into war presidents, Russophobe presidents," Lavrov said.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that Ukraine has adopted laws that prohibit education in Russian, media in Russian, including Ukrainian, laws that even, in fact, prohibit the use of the Russian language in everyday life. "Any cultural contacts related to the Russian language are prohibited. And this is all supported by the West. Just like the West supports the regular marches of neo-Nazis with swastikas, with the symbols of the divisions, which were banned by the Nuremberg Tribunal, are recognized as criminal. The West supports all this," - Lavrov pointed out.

AMX-13 got pretty wide distribution. That was a cold-war tank and if you didn't want to have to deal with selling your soul to either the US or the USSR, France was a 3rd party who had a reputation for selling to anyone who would pay; it took massive pressure to get France to just slow down arms sales to Israel after shitting on the arabs.
(That was also before the magic that was "licensed local production")

The AMX-30 had a decent number of operators, but it was usually in small quantities. Leclerc's only non-french customer was UAE, who donated some to Jordan. And that's it. India was looking at Leclercs, but the per-unit cost was twice that of the Armata because of costs of reactivating the factories (and french labor costs).

I'll buy fucky export laws, but French armor was never very highly reviewed; the armor was pretty shit, they relied on speed and target profile for defense which meant they were loud and cramped.

Zelensky bans officials traveling abroad for non-official purposes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that he had signed a decree banning officials from traveling abroad on anything but official business.

“Officials will no longer be able to travel abroad for vacation or any other non-governmental purpose,” Zelensky said during his daily evening address.

“This applies to all government officials, as well as to various other levels of local government. This applies to law enforcement officers, members of parliament, prosecutors, and all those who have to work for the country and within the country.

“If they want to have a rest now, they will have a rest out of the state service.”

Zelensky said that the cabinet would develop a procedure for ensuring that any officials leaving Ukraine were doing so for “a real business trip.”

Zelensky signals personnel changes within the Ukrainian government

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday signaled there would be changes to “personnel” within the Ukrainian government, without naming specifically affected people.

“There are also personnel decisions – some today, some will be made tomorrow – regarding managers of various levels in government ministries and other central government agencies, in the regions, and in the law enforcement system,” Zelensky said during his daily, evening address.

86% of schools in Kyiv region now have bomb shelters, official says

In Ukraine’s Kyiv region, 86% of schools and kindergartens now have bomb shelters, the head of that region said on Telegram Monday.

“A total of 1,085 shelters have already been set up in educational facilities in Kyiv region,” said Oleksiy Kuleba, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.

“That's 86% of the region's schools and kindergartens that can operate in full-time or mixed formats,” Kuleba added.

EU pledges an additional $590 million in support for Ukraine

The European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Monday outlined the bloc's plans to continue supporting Ukraine, saying it reached an agreement to provide an additional 500 million euros ($543.03 million) and additional military training assistance worth 45 million euros ($48.87 million), dedicated to a military training mission for Ukrainian forces.

That brings the EU's total amount of military support for Ukraine, coming via the European Union's intergovernmental fund, to 3.6 billion euros ($3.9 billion), Borrell told reporters in Brussels on Monday.

"Ukraine is resisting with courage and determination," Borrell said in a news conference. "Ukraine has to win this war and we will support in the best possible way."
Borrell added that the total figure of the bloc's support to Ukraine, including military, financial, economic and humanitarian aid, now stands at 49 billion euros ($53.21 million).

"Russia continues its systematic barbaric attacks on Ukrainian cities, killing civilians and destroying civilian infrastructures," Borrell said. "We have not seen any genuine willingness from Russia regarding a fair and sustainable peace."

I don't get how anyone can take the Russians seriously when they keep throwing out "Russophobia" like they're fucking trannies or some shit. Vlad, nobody is irrationally afraid of you, they just hate you for very valid reasons that span centuries of shitty behavior by Russians. "If you don't let me invade people you're Russophobic" sounds a whole lot like "if you don't wax my balls you're transphobic".

Not very heckin based and traditionpilled if you ask me. I kinda wish the Tzar had been able to set up a Russian analog to Taiwan so we could see the clear difference between modern Russia and the Russia of old. It would probably be a shithole still but it might have been cool to see.

Also I'd figure I'd ask here. Why do Russians sperg out about MUH LANGUAGE when their language is almost identical to Ukrainian? It's fucking autistic. Didn't they also basically use Lukashenko as a puppet which has limited the use of Belarusian language?

They should be taken extremely seriously.
The chest beating from Westerners because of some Ukrainian wins and their lack of further support and eternal tergiversation will likely result in the loss of Bakhmut.
Russia, with all its lies and propaganda, should always be treated as a very high threat, unpredictable country, with near unlimited resources. Underestimating it is naive.

I don't mean seriously as in terms of being a threat. I mean in terms of them being total assclowns. It's pretty clear they are not a serious group of people seeking to solve issues. They don't care about anything except lining their pockets and securing power, and they'll say shit that is blatantly retarded if they think it will help them meet that goal. Russia as a country doesn't even seem to have a uniting feature, which might be why they seethe about MUH LANGUAGE, it's the only thing any of them have to justify being a country.

Absolutely, the United Kingdom took until 2006 to finally pay off what they owed America for lend-lease in WW2. About the only time Europe got American aid that didn't need to be paid back was the Marshall Plan and that was mainly because we gave European nations money in the form of grants as far as I know.
Oh, there were strings attached.
We rebuilt all of Europe, but the cost was having their economies turned into adjuncts of the US one. It was surprisingly mutually beneficial since we sold them products and then re-invested the currency overseas until the European economies had recovered to the point they were capable of significant exports to the USA, which upset the whole deal since it had been predicated on the USA exporting to Europe. Its probably the only time Keynes was ever right about anything.

Now, in case of goldbug, the gold standard is great for financial stability... if you don't have major international trade happening. When you do it becomes an easy means for capital to flee the country in case of economic shock as people trade currency for gold and then do business overseas in that. As far back as the Roman times capital flight via imports such as spices and silks was a major concern to the Roman government because every denarius that went East never, ever came back.

Yeah, French light vehicles are really damn good. Probably the best out there, although the JLTV is going to give some of their armored cars a run for their money, especially the recon model with a CROWS with a 30mm and some Javelin tubes.

Man, this is turning out to be a weird war. Ukraine keeps modernizing even as the Russians dig deep into their older stockpiles.
Day 300+ of the US invasion of Iraq: US refribished M48s struggle to counter Iraqi T-90A MBTs and the US releases 120 Republican Guard POWs (who are now lauded as heroes after the 99 day seige of Nasiriyah) in exchange for Bush Jr.'s drinking buddy from Yale.

The MUH LANGUAGE sperging is so stupid.

It's like calling them Nazis.

Fucking Zelensky grew up speaking Russian and most of the shows he's made are in Russian because that gets them a broader audience.

My understanding is that Russian has enough of a cultural footprint that people in Ukraine are going to learn it whether they really want to or not. No dis on indigenous Ukrainian literature but you'd have to be a fool to have the entire Russian canon right there and not want to sample it.

All of Russia's arguments for invading Ukraine are so low-IQ, zero-sum, and disingenuous.

Estonia is giving Ukraine all of their arty together with a ton of Carl Gustavs.
They are going to get himars instead.
So yeah, support is not winding down.

Somehow we don't have French or British invading Canada.

I keep hearing jokes from rutards about Estonians being slow and the like, at this point they could continue doing it just out of spite.
We'll see if they find Estonian shells any slower than American or Ukrainian.
