The new Hogwarts Legacy game is currently a top seller just with preorders. The weird thing of Harry Potter is it is still the only big franchise in a fairly desirable genre (magical school), and now everybody who grew up on Harry Potter has kids who they want to get into Harry Potter because they were into it when they were kids. Just like how many people's parents got them into Star Wars. I am sure that anybody on the site who had a parent had their parent pass their love of one thing on to them even if we didn't take to it. Right now it's Harry Potter's turn for that will happen, because despite what we might say, most millennials are normal people and don't give a fuck about Queen TERF JK Rowling's politics or beliefs. They just remember liking some books and movies.
Harry Potter is still one of the most profitable brands in the world and prints money due to amusement parks, merchandising, the movies are notable for still having high sales, there's been spin off movies like Fantastic Beasts, a prequel, and a stage play sequel since the original movie series. The book sales are also still quite high, my friendly local book store has an entire section dedicated to the novels and spin off books, and that section makes up a full 5% of their entire stock, and around 20% of their monthly sales. This isn't something like Chapters or Indigo, this is just a small business in a small conservative town. Some other numbers BTW, when I asked them about business in November, as I'm long time friends with the owners first as a customer then just getting to know them beyond business, they get 30% from manga, 10% from "top comic brands" (this is stuff like Marvel or DC, but only the really popular stuff like Spiderman), 20% "current hot young adult novel" (this changes every two or three months, but it makes up a reliable portion of their income), 8% fiction not already covered, 2% nonfiction. The remaining 10% is speciality ordering. Some of that specialty ordering is Harry Potter because they can't maintain stock to this day. I trust their business is likely somewhat representative of larger trends.
As for Scott Cawthon, he likes to donate his riches to republicans, amongst all the charities and humanitarian causes he donates to. He's also a devote Christian, equal parts a traditionalist and a progressive. He is a good man and a man of his faith and principles, and while I'm an edgy priest burner and don't agree with his politics I respect that he stands beside them, but since he has beliefs I'd mildly oppose on a few fronts and I am barely left of center, naturally that means the radical left hates him with the heat of a thousand suns for daring to have his beliefs and politics that aren't the same as theirs. He naturally hates trans people. Despite the fact I first hand saw him pop into a stream on multiple occasions and donate to people streaming his games trying to raise money to transition, often more than paying for their surgery with simple messages like "I hope all goes well, but I really hope you exhaust non-medical means before you attempt anything risky". Yet his donation records got leaked and the internet turned on him overnight. So he retired with his fuck you money to spend time with his wife and kids.
