Rick and Morty' co-creator Justin Roiland faces felony domestic violence charges

Justin Roiland, the star and co-creator of the animated comedy series “Rick and Morty,” has been charged with felony domestic violence in Orange County, California, in connection with a 2020 incident, according to a criminal complaint filed in May 2020 by the Orange County District Attorney. He appeared in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

Roiland pleaded not guilty in 2020. Roiland and his attorneys didn’t respond to requests for comment.

NBC News obtained the criminal complaint in the case, which charges Roiland, 42, with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit. NBC News is the first to report publicly on the case.

The complaint states the incident occurred on or about Jan. 19, 2020, against an anonymous Jane Doe who was dating Roiland at the time.

According to Orange County Superior Court records, Roiland pleaded not guilty to both charges in October 2020. Since then, the case has been the subject of more than a dozen court hearings, including pre-trial hearings. A trial date is not currently set.

Many court records remained sealed but the available public documents seen by NBC News say Roiland was charged in May 2020. Roiland was arrested and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020 and arraigned in October 2020.

A protective order filed in October 2020 and documented in the court minutes said Roiland is not to harass, threaten or surveil the person named in the protective order, who is not known to NBC News. Roiland cannot go within 100 feet of the person, according to the order, which also ordered Roiland to turn in any firearms he owned or possessed. The order lasts until October 2023, and it’s not known who submitted the request for the order.

Details of the case, including police body camera footage, police reports, abuse investigation reports, medical reports and recordings of interviews are currently being withheld from the public under a protective order. The affidavit in support of Roiland’s arrest is also sealed.

During Thursday’s hearing, Roiland’s attorney confirmed there is a plea offer available to Roiland, but did not discuss details. The brief hearing concluded a moment later with an agreement to convene again on April 27. Roiland was ordered to attend the hearing.

Roiland is best known for Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty,” which has spawned a billion-dollar media and merchandising franchise and is one of the most popular adult television comedies. The show’s sixth season aired in September 2022, and a seventh season was ordered by Cartoon Network as part of a long-term deal for 70 new episodes. Roiland, in addition to co-creating the series with Dan Harmon, voices the two titular characters.

Adult Swim, whose parent company Warner Bros. Discovery also owns Cartoon Network, declined to comment.

Over the past three years, as the domestic violence case has inched along, Roiland’s career has progressed. He released an NFT art collection with over a dozen works in 2021, which sold for over $1.65 million. He released another NFT project in 2022. Roiland also sold his first painting via Sotheby’s auction in 2021.

Roiland also co-created and voiced the main character in Hulu’s “Solar Opposites,” which debuted in 2020 and was renewed for a fifth season in October 2022. Most recently, he was behind Hulu’s “Koala Man” series, the first episode of which was released this month.

Roiland also released the video game “High on Life” in 2022, which he developed through his studio Squanch Games. It became the top-selling game on Steam and the fourth most-played Xbox game the week of its release. Roiland won an Emmy for “Rick and Morty” in 2020 and a Hollywood Critics Choice Association TV award for the show in 2022

Let it be known. Season 1 is the best out of the rest. Also, it seems to be Hollywood M.O that when someone catches a scandal, everything they're on goes bye-bye immediately. Hope Roiland has saved enough cash to survive once this is all over.

Still, its funny how a fan cartoon making Doc and Marti do gay shit got this far is still impressive to me.

Absolutely positive that Big Mouth is someone's vanity project and can't bear to have it be known as a failure that it actually is. Its Netflix's equivalent of Johnny Test.

Either they give lesser shows a chance or it dies out. Personally hoping Ballmastrz get a new season but knowing how these Hollywood types are.. they are more likely going to do something half-assed to cover themselves.

Funny because Netflix revived Johnny Test and Big Mouth is Nick Kroll’s vanity project and his dad just happens to be billionaire businessman.

Big Mouth is clearly made to groom children. Adults show it to children to try and influence their attitudes towards sex.

I'M PICKLE UNEMPLOYED MORTY!

Probably need to make a new thread but I don't think it's worth it MORTAY!

I'm still fucking pissed that only got 2 seasons. I love Smiling Friends, but Ballmastrz is definitely the best show I've seen out of Adult Swim in the past 8 or so years. There's just something about Karacas' style that really rubs me the right way. I almost never seen anyone talk about this show, so I needed to sperg a little.

Now back on topic.
I always though Rick and Morty would eventually just petter out after a few more seasons, mostly because the incompetent fucks can't get a season out in a reasonable and timely fashion. I enjoy the show from time to time, but I never understood how people just eat up Roiland's shit like they did for so long, he's got like 3 jokes and 2 voices, that's literally it. He can be a really creative guy, but he just constantly falls back to "it's just fucking Rick and Morty again", which is a big reason I can't stomach any of the games he's been involved in, it's just the same shit over and over.

Something about him always came off as "off-putting" to me when I would see him speaking and presenting himself in person, almost like at a subconscious levels I just knew he had some skeletons locked away. Dude just emits "weirdo" energy.

I'm definitely not sad to see Rick and Morty go though, the show overstayed it's welcome and the Reddit-tier part of the fanbase should unironically be gassed for the good of humanity. It's gonna be an absolute dumpster fire if they try and keep the show going without Roiland, but I'm all for it because I know it would make Reddit seethe eternally. It's going to be interesting seeing where AS goes from here. If Smiling Friends ends up becoming the new front runner, sweet, Zach and Michael earned it.

I guess we will see in the next two years if people watched the show because Roiland improved funny noises while drunk in a recording booth, or if viewers tuned in for Harmons "genius", "subversive", "deep', "emotional' writing. It could be that people still tune in just because the show is a name they recognize.

How popular was Smiling Friends with the general public? Say what you will about Rick and Morty but for some reason that show was able to attract the attention of the general public.
I think Smiling Friends actually performed pretty well. The first season did just release, so probably too early to tell if it's gonna resonate with normies. I figure they'll get a lot more advertisment when the second season is on the horizon. It really took until season 3 of Rick and Morty until the show really hit its stride in terms of popularity, especially since they really stepped up promotion of the show at that point.

The bright side of this is we will finally stop seeing Rick & Morty shit being advertised like Rick and Morty D&D as well as the show no longer being quoted on Reddit and Twitter anymore.
That's my favorite part - that reddit is going to lose an integral piece of it's identity. It's almost as good as progressives having to disavow Harry Potter.

That move got me to stop watching any of their shit at all except for old Space Ghost eps I have downloaded. Rick and Morty was garbage and I hate the people involved anyway but I did enjoy Squidbillies, and they shit canned the guy just because of wrongthink quicker than they fired Roiland the actual woman beater.
I wouldn't be surprised if they get Tracy Morgan back to voice Rick for one last season just to mess with everyone again.

I hope none of this messes with any of Michael Cusack's shit.

Okay, this is hilarious!
Wikipedia changed Justin Roiland's 'Early Life' section. LMAO

HE'S NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE JEW PARENTS ANYMORE MORTY HE BEAT HIS FUCKING WIFE EVERYONE KOWS IF YOU BEAT YOUR WIFE YOU FUCKIN CAN-UUURP CAN'T BE A JEW ANYMORE MORTY.
Seriously watch them remove his name from the credits of rick and morty too like I KNOW they've been pushing for the last few years for something like that with how frequently I've seen dan harmon mentioned as the "creator" compared to justin roiland who's clearly the drunk ass brains behind the show's "co-creator". Sometimes they're both referred to as co-creators but I've seen enough times where dan harmon gets treated by stuff talking about rick and morty like he was THE GUY behind it that I'm anticipating a fucking vic situation again except there might have actually been abuse this time instead of dub employee in-fighting drama bullshit.

Rick and morty isn't his only thing and the reason it's the way it is is probably due to it being a hybrid of other cancelled projects and ideas. Hell the opening theme comes from fucking dogworld, a cancelled sitcom about humans in a world where everyone is dogs planet of the apes style. I'm pretty sure the reason why a lot of shit ends up being "just more rick and morty" is because the people that keep hiring him do so to make their own "rick and morty" in a style similar to how hannah barbera had several shows similar to each other due to competing networks hiring them to make shows similar to their other successful shows but with fucking streaming services instead. Roiland seems to do best in terms of comedy when he can just throw whatever weird random shit he comes up with at the wall till something sticks but rick and morty's success and milking like many other people that got popular for their "one thing" out of a shitload of other things it's kinda probably corrupted him a bit by boxing him in like what happened with some other internet funnymen.

EDIT: It'd be fucking hilarious if Roiland pulled a mr. frog IRL (complete with eating the adult swim exec)

It's literally named after his made up word and he voices every fucking character in the games they made with him, jesus christ if by some hellish improbable irony the abuse shit turns out to be disprovable could you fucking imagine the fallout of the reputation of fucking everyone involved with this unpersoning of the guy.
