Death notices are free, but you don’t need a death certificate to have a death notice (or obituary) published. Those notices are published within a couple days of the death. Death certificates can take a long time to obtain. Think about someone who dies at home for unknown reasons and needs an autopsy. The notice is printed, but the death certificate is going to be delayed.
Honestly, you’re probably right. I don’t underestimate the scheming abilities of two hillbillies desperate for money. That GFM already has almost 5k - actually if they are stupid enough to try and scam a suicide like this.. the gorl world community was a good target. It’s a big enough community, where you can reach a lot of people fast, and most of the people in the community are pay pigs willing to donate in a heartbeat.

Right because funeral homes can verify the death. A newspaper will trust a licensed funeral home placing an obit but any individual calling up a paper will need a death record or death certificate. People trying to place fake obits to escape debts, angry spouses, angry lovers, scam insurance companies, scam charity or just create lots lots of drama for well over 150 years. Newspapers had to establish criteria for who can publish obits.
