cosplay is my big one. Im a welder, a builder, i like building shit, and im in what you would call the "big rigs" category of cosplay. Its barely a costume, more of vehicle with legs in many cases (mine it is), takes a shit ton of maintenance, upgrades every year like electronics such as sound systems and lights, usually breaks after one day, but its all fucking worth it to see the guys and kids at the con's jaws drop at something they never expected to see irl.

Meanwhile you have Thots who buy a Dv'a bodysuit, do some make up, and somehow that's cosplay. They didn't even properly build it. And some put in zero effort at all, case in point:

I feel you on that, I am not a cosplayer I tend to dress very old fashioned even in my work I always tend towards older styles of dress and put a high-vis on over my leather waistcoat when I have too. But I hate seeing art get trashed by low effort, I'm not talking bad result here i.e. Sonichu might be derivative and basic as fuck but it's still art and expression of a albeit twisted malfunctioning kind. But there is a kind of person who doesn't put effort in and uses it as a thirst trap and it cheapens the effort others put in and in general lowers the standard.

I think with cosplay the defining line is Appreciation for the Character and Just being slutty in a costume, but the latter is far more common.

I would rather you try, and I see the effort, even if you fail horribly, rather than you be a thot that's going for Instagram pics and social media stardom. I respect that because I've been there. Its sad the Rap cosplay has gotten, because there are some really talented people making some crazy things, that appreciate the character, or in my case, the vehicle, that's all brought down because of the titty cosplayers that are just pure smut.

It was retro gaming for me, in the 90's you could go to a thrift store or garage sale and find various games for next to nothing. That's why I collected them, because they were cheap and easy to find with a little effort. Then the masses discovered Ebay and anything "retro" had to be worth a lot of money because it was "Old". Thus people brought up absolutely everything regardless of if it was valuable, the people selling the stuff to get rid of it thought it must be valuable because one copy sold on Ebay for $100 or whatever.

So an enjoyable cheap hobby became expensive and filled with people who just wanted to make a quick buck.

Yep. I have the unfortunate trifecta of interests that have been overrun by troons. Those being art, writing, and old technology. The tech one is the one I’m the most embarrassed to actually tell people irl, because somehow it went from a total nothing hobby to troon/scalper central. How is old technology such a lightning rod for trannies?

At least I’ve never liked D&D/Warhammer, dodged a bullet there I guess.

Autism and trying to relive their childhood? Who knows but it's fucking annoying.

Probably. I like old tech because it’s usually mechanically simpler (and therefore easy to work on) and I like the aesthetic more than what’s available new. Though, literally anything is more aesthetically appealing than modern interior design IMO.

EXACTLY, I am sitting here as I type this in a pair of heavy Moleskin Trousers, a loose fitting shirt without a collar that laces up but the arms can be rolled up an tied off and a leather waistcoat that's almost a jerkin and some woollen socks, everything has been made custom for me but to older 1900 eta style patterns. I'm not putting a particular effort into it I just feel comfy in it and care about how I look and it works for me (I look odd in a T-Shirt, Jeens), and when I do put the effort in with the better 3/4's and do living history nights it looks good.

For me the big problem has been people "Oh he's a peakey blinders cosplayer", nope sorry other than some of the costumes I really don't like the show and have been dressing like this long before the show aired, and the people who do ape the show put very little effort in and you can tell.

Ironically one of the best cosplays I have ever seen was one of the most simple, back when BSG was the best Sci-Fi on TV in the first series someone was doing a Galactica Pilot cosplay and it was a pair of combats, grey t and an a black tanktop over it and some cigars and a pack of playing cards, they just acted it so well - once it got popular there was a lot of "Thirst" players who wore nothing but a Red Dress and Blond Wig or some latex version of a outfit.

See, what you're doing is how it should be, you wear it because you like it, and in your case, it's your day to day. That's how cosplay should be. And once upon a time, long before me, it was. I do it because I've always been creative, and in terms of my current cosplay, going on 6 years in its heavily upgraded and repaired form, I do it because I was inspired by a man that was wearing a AT ST, the scout walker from star wars!

And so I built my own "big rig", with the megear funds I had as a teenager, lots of math, sleepless nights, and engnuity. I only go to one con a year, one day in costume, nor for me but for them. I mean that. It's heavy, clunky, takes a lot of time to fix ( it always breaks due to its size), but I do it to bring up the level of the con, to hopefully inspire others to do the same. I don't post about it on social media, there's ever only been one official picture taken by the con staff, everything else is word of mouth.

Point is the Cosplay really isn't for you. If it was, I would have burnt mine years ago for how much effort it takes to lug it up there WITH extra help. You should do it not only because you like it, but to brighten spirits, to make the little kids smile, and inspire others to elevate their craft. That is cosplay, that is ART!

Thanks! If it wasn't the farms I'd share some pics of myself to show exactly what I mean but I curate my stlye nd dress to suit what I am doing, don't get me wrong I do have some more modern stuff but that's the exception but not the rule - the better 3/4's likes going to spain or the south of france on holiday and I have some t-shirts and shorts but they are really basic and I consider that my off duty dress uniform and for a week at the beach an pool I can live with it but it's the exception and not the rule.

She is every much into vintage style and dress herself (honestly her wedding dress she's sewing is stunning, and I offered to pay for it and she's said Nope) when she's not working she dresses in a more 1900's - 20's style, we do a "Glad Rag's Night" where we dress in ww2 an early 1950's style and swing dance but she makes most of the clothing for that, but my day to day stuff we use a professional tailor.

The thing is we're both comfy in how we dress and look, for me an her this isn't a cosplay it's just who we are style wise and if she wakes up one morning in a t-shirt an sweats yea that's fine too she's just in a different mood or ill and I am more concerned about that than how she's dressed.

I was really sick before and over Chrismas and I was considering shaving off my beard because I was throwing up that badly, she said to me she'd shave me while I was sleeping if I wanted because I really didn't want to do it myself 9I was shaking that bad I didn't trust myself with a blade mear my own body), I was that spazzed out for a few days I bearly knew what was going on and she made sure I was dressed comfy and packed in the dog's to keep me warm.

As I said man it's all about basic effort, lot's of people think a old style beard was just a wild growth it's not there was a big thing about styling it and what it was styled like that spoke volumes about YOU as a person.

A lot of people think what I wear day to day is purely style, and that is not the case. I wear a leather flat cap because when I am forging something it doesn't burn or singe, when I am doing woodwork I can just slap it off and it's not got dist embedded, I wear a waistcoat because it looks good it's made from leather as it's durable and acts as a layer of PPE from hot and sharp stuff better than any modern material can do.

Moleskin fabric is comfy, warm in winter, cool in summer hard wearing and very easy to clean.

Because who doesn't love replacing half the chips on the board until you figure out the capacitor in the Power On Reset circuit has failed and the stupid (perfectly working) CPU was trying to run before power had stabilized.

I suppose at least it wasn't some surface mount POR IC that I could have never debugged.

Also, polystyrene capacitors.

Moleskin and leather, speaking as a welder, is great PPE, even against sparks and flying metal. Synthetics just melt. Your dress, cosplay, all of it, should say something about you, or in your case, you and your wife who seems very sweet to be taking care of you like that :) . And if you two can rock it, do it, the world needs more flavor in it than just the dude in a T shirt.

Personally, for all the effort I see people put into their cosplay, I see others who either put no effort in, or bought most of it. Teenagers I have some slack for, they're on a budget, but even then, with enough determination even they can build something truly unique.

I'd say things changed in the 2010's with the introduction of smartphones. People could become famous overnight. So if you had big tits, around all these nerds, it wasn't hard to get a following, in fact a few of those examples are so egregious that we track them on this site as proper Lolcows. Haven't met any of them as far as I recall, don't plan on it, they make a mockery of the craft, but I shudder to think I've shared the same con as some of them.

It's 100% autism. A lot of autists are trooning out and since that's become one of their passions, they have to inject it into everything. Same as when they become furries or lolicon. The only difference is that trannies are the latest hot topic so you get it shoved in your face constantly. Art and writing are partial outliers to that just because they've always been subject to weird politics.

The complete opposite happened to me. I got interested in amateur radio because the physics is fascinating. Then I found out the hobby is replete with absolute lunatic boomers and semifunctional autists who hate the government. I like it more now.
Wait until you start diving into Wayne Green's editorials in 73 Magazine.

Jesus fucking christ i hate this shit the most, basic gardening advice is gone to the shit. You are so right about the selling info shit, i was trying to find a good source for separating my succulent pups everything i've seen is either behind a paywall/book or just completely wrong in every sense.
Might I recommend our very own gardening thread, if you haven't seen it already?

I agree with you around the tiddy cosplayers, but fuck man i've seen the inside of those cons not so much mech based, but the fucking star wars community especially 501st/Mando Mercs jesus christ i was full deep for years. I just up and quit because of the fucking elitism and full on tantrums from grown arse adults. Still i love seeing talented cosplayers and the gear they build but i fucking hate cosplayers with a passion.

Also sailor bubba takes me back to a happier time.

Every fucking hobby I’ve been fascinated in that doesn’t involve going outside and touching grass has been taken over by autistic SJW’s. TTRPG’s, sci-fi video games, wiki writing and editing, drawing, being into cult tv shows like MST3k, 20th century authors (in this case the SJW’s usually slander fans by saying an author was racist, xenophobic, sexist, blah blah blah), sewing…like Jesus fuck people. Let quirky girls just be quirky instead of hijacking it with your LGBTQA+ hypersexual sperging like the fucking creeps you are.

To be fair, I don't interact with other cosplayers much other than just pictures in the halls, basic shit. I've known for a long time that it's drama and oneupmanship. That and I would go insane if I would have to keep a maintenance hog like mine constantly repaired for more than one con a year. I actually have this thing called a job lol. That said I agree, the talent is great, it's just usually the people behind it are spergs. And yes Sailor Bubba, as memey as he is, times were just better back then man.

HAMfests are an amazing melting pot of crazy, passionate old dudes (and grumpy wives trying to sell their cookbook collection and old jewelry for some reason). The ones around us get smaller every year and while it's a bit of a bummer I think I would rather keep it what it is than let the Maker Faire people in to schmooze, which a few people have discussed for the numbers. The odd table of PC parts and 3D printers is fine but mark my words the second you see a Make Magazine logo next to ARRL on a ticket we're fucked. Maker Faire is fine enough for a visit when you know what you're getting into but I don't want my wholesome "if Jesus then aliens" old radio bastards mingling with some troon selling RGB solder-your-own-dildo kits.
Schizophrenic people ruined brick and mortar hobby stores for me. As I love going into the shops and generally getting good advice from the staff to the point I got a job at one.
I did my time working at a craft store in the mid 00's and wholeheartedly agree. Lonely old ladies talking about their cats and dead husband at the counter? Yeah sure whatever I'll look sympathetic and call someone to open the second register. A gaggle of shoplifting Mennonites that pull the same shit every time? We can reprint the cutting slip and it still makes a good story to this day. Stoned college kids coming in to touch all the yarn? Gotta love it when they push a fake tree around in a shopping cart. The true autists and crazies though... Patience has a limit and it's broken shit, being accused of stealing from them, getting hostile when you tell them they can't panhandle in front of the store, that they know you're stealing their identity when you ID them with the credit card, it goes on. I've always had patience for seriously disabled adults with tard wranglers, but for some reason our store was both a schizo magnet and where the wranglers liked to take a sizeable group of tards for walkies on a regular basis.

And somehow they still paled next to the after church crowd. As best as I could ever work out, being full of the lord gives you cart blanche to be a mega-cunt and the bigger the hat, the more Jesus in them.
I believe Is all related. This, sjws, troons, coomers, censorship, everything. Is all about Big Tech , Big Data and the social media industry and is gonna get worse as they are consolidating and forming corporatist international cartels with expressed intentions of planning the economy and social engineering people.

The trans agenda is only the tip of the iceberg as tech reptiles all want to push transhumanism as well as a barrage of other abominations to devoid humans of humanity..

We're not heading for Brave New World, 1984, or even Idiocracy. We're racing at breakneck speed towards Transmetropolitan.

I'm with some of you on the knitting/sewing stuff.
Ravelry is terrible, I only log on there if I'm looking for a certain pattern. Too woke, and the pattern designers get shit on for not having a certain pattern go up to a size 8XXXXXXXX. And almost anything that's posted is "cultural appropriation" to somebody there.
I stopped going to most of the sewing sites as well, a lady posted a picture of Melania Trump in a pretty dress, and wanted to know if there was a pattern for one similar. You would've thought she asked how to club baby seals due to the responses she got, and the mods were unable or just plain unwilling to stop the shitfest.
And no, I don't want to know how to knit a uterus or any other part of the female reproductive system, or make a dick cozy.

The very first book listed was something with a title like "The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School" or some such. Like no one can just write about a decade in a person's day to day life without all of this? Like white heterosexual people in small town America don't exist in fiction anymore?

I had to look that up, and it’s written by some latinx they/them. Which then led me to this Buzzfeed Article (Archive if you don’t want to click on buzzfeed) of trans and nonbinary authors and it’s very obvious it’s all women. I’m guessing there’s so much slice of life about queers, by queers, because of “write what you know”… and since they made being LGBTQA their entire personality, what they know is the very narrow band of their own lives. It seems like the books are either ideal fantasies where little goes wrong, or a thinly veiled autobiography.

Also predictably, lots of he/they fujoshis fantasizing about their gay boys kissing. Except now it’s Serious Queer Fiction instead of literally just yaoi.

It’s put a damper on my writing too. I actually quite enjoy writing about trans characters that are fundamentally tragic or broken in some way — same as any other character with a mental illness, reflecting real life — but I have no desire to deal with real people who won’t settle for anything but a perfect, affirming world in every piece of fiction that exists. Not worth the trouble.
