I always thought it was funny how Archie made Robotnik’s change into modern Eggman a major plot point with plenty of buildup while Sonic’s change from classic to modern is more or less hand waved away, while Fleetway did the opposite with Sonic’s new green eyes being a major plot point related to Chaos, and Robotnik simply changing clothes.

Oh no, Archie would always take the convoluted route. Sonic's redesign involved a plot where he's trying to get Knothole to stop being in a pocket dimemsion that's 3 hours in the future. And the reason why it was like that was because in Endgame, Robotnik had a weapon called the Ultimate Annihilator which he was going to use to destroy Knothole, but Snivley hacked it so that it would instead kill Robotnik and put Knothole in said pocket dimension.
Anyway, Sonic does this by running around the world while carrying a Super Emerald.
And the story's page order is reversed.

Sure, but the actual redesign is just a small part of that. From what I remember, Sonic kept changing forms over and over for an entire issue and the Adventure design just kinda stuck at the end.
Actually, I should probably just rewatch Cybershell’s retrospective.

Man, Archie Sonic had so much shit going on and now I just want more.

You forgot the change that preceded that:

Ryan Bloom weighs in on whether or not Sonic will remain an icon, or if he'll become a relic of the past.
Ryan said:
I mean he’s already survived 31 years, going on 32. That’s no guarantee he’ll last forever, but it does seem to suggest that the hardest part of developing “staying power” has already been conquered.

If Sega said “We don’t feel like making Sonic games anymore” tomorrow, there are two hundred corporations out there that would hear that and line up at Sega’s door to buy the rights and keep it going, for better and worse. You tell a business executive “yeah we have this franchise that’s still going after 30 years” and that’s the kind of stability they dream of when they go to bed at night.

And as Sega has proven now, Sonic has reached a point where nostalgia has turned this series in to a perpetual motion machine, where old and lapsed fans can circle back around for games like Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania. They can, and have been, recycling “the parts of Sonic people like” forever, now, as generations rotate in and out of nostalgic cycles.

And I’ve said it before: if Sonic could survive a bomb like Sonic 06, I don’t know if you could kill this franchise if you tried. Even if it was officially retired, I think the fandom would keep it going in some weird, mutant form basically forever. It is almost impossible for this thing to die or be forgotten now, both for better and worse.

Haven't been keeping everyone updated but I did eventually finish Sonic Adventure and have started SA2.

Playing as all the characters in SA1 is a huge tedious pain in the ass, having to do the same levels over and over, I barely managed to do it, I had fun playing as Sonic but the rest was tedious for the most part.

SA2 cuts the fat, there's no hub levels and I get the impression this isn't going to take as long even when playing as both teams.

But honestly, while I'm glad, SA2 also feels a lot more conventional a game and thus less interesting than the original, SA2 has some very charming early 2000s style, but the quirks of SA1 stand out as a little more interesting, SA2 feels like a more typical platformer of the era.

I just finished Sonic '06 for the first time. These points have been talked about to death but whatever:

- My biggest problem with the plot is that the game can't decide whether it runs on a stable time loop, or an unstable one (i.e. "Back to the Future" style). Almost all instances of time travel in the game suggest a stable loop (Mephiles recognizing Shadow, finding Omega already in standby mode etc.). But when the Egg Carrier crashes, Sonic goes back to change the past i.e. an unstable loop.

- When Sonic and Silver are on a time-critical mission to save Elise, they have to pass three trials. After completing them and making their way through Kingdom Valley, they catch up with the Egg Carrier just minutes too late. Meanwhile, when Shadow and Rouge need to get to Kingdom Valley, they just... take a back door? Why couldn't Sonic go this way? Do the priests hate Elise that much?

- One positive thing is that I actually like Eggman in this game. He's a little more subtle here It honestly reminds of his character in SA2. Mike Pollock has been voicing Eggman for 20 years, and it seems like he really exhibits more of a range in this game than any other. Listen to him introducing himself to Elise or talking about Solaris. He sounds like a completely different person.
Anyway, thank you for reading my pointless sperging about a game that's been done to death.
