I know a lot of Googlers because I run in that sphere, but I don't think I can name too many names because it would out me.
The troon squads who spent most of their time on internal social media agitating about things were decimated, and many senior people who were fired were activists/agitators who spent a lot of time on the internal social media platform. Those people tended to work on non-critical projects (like the Fuchsia operating system), so it was easy to fire them. Some of these people were very highly rated in performance reviews, but it's unclear to me whether they were actually high performers or not. At this point, big tech performance review scores are more about politics than work performance. When promotion time came, they often couldn't justify a promotion.
Also, the "day in the life" tiktoks were pretty embarrassing for big tech companies, so I believe the people who posted them (and their groups) were also targeted for cuts unless they were high performers. Those TikToks were mostly not recruiting material, despite what a lot of people believe.
The common thread for all these people is that they were very replaceable, often doing "soft" engineering, "product management," or recruiting. Many infrastructure/technology teams (the ones doing the hard engineering) were 100% safe. Search and ads (who bring in the money) were pretty much 100% safe, too. Engineers in those groups tend to lean conservative in their sensibilities and don't spend a lot of time agitating.
More broadly, the cuts also hit others in "soft," non-revenue-producing departments, but Google did seem to be going after the troons and their "allies."
