President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

Erm... it isn't. In criminal code of RF they use полового rather than сексуального as far I see.

Part of CC RF reffereing to sexual crimes is titled Преступления против половой неприкосновенности и половой свободы личности.

Full text of art. 131 CC RF:

1. Изнасилование, то есть половое сношение с применением насилия или с угрозой его применения к потерпевшей или к другим лицам либо с использованием беспомощного состояния потерпевшей, -

наказывается лишением свободы на срок от трех до шести лет.

2. Изнасилование:

а) совершенное группой лиц, группой лиц по предварительному сговору или организованной группой;

б) соединенное с угрозой убийством или причинением тяжкого вреда здоровью, а также совершенное с особой жестокостью по отношению к потерпевшей или к другим лицам;

в) повлекшее заражение потерпевшей венерическим заболеванием.

Not sure how it works in Ural Mountains, but when one is in Germoney reffering to anything related to law, oftes usses words as close as can to the ones used in relevant legal act. I don't see any reason to use 'сексуального' in anything related to art. 131 CC RF: or use 'половое' (according to title of that glova - part of CC RF) or 'Изнасилование' (as name of offence used in art. 131).

I amended my post after doing a bit of research. But I won't claim to know for sure, because I don't. Either way, from what I understand, the way they phrased it is sufficient to convey the meaning, considering to whom the letter was addressed to. It's not a document meant for police, but appeal to a higher authority to make them act on reports already submitted to the police and military. Supposedly.

And now for something completely different:

Belgian buyer of Europe’s spare tanks hopes they see action in Ukraine

RDT_20230201_0948583117719863534396103.png
The hangar belongs to the Belgium defence company OIP and contains one of the biggest privately owned reserves of weapons in Europe. “Many of these tanks have been sitting here for years. Hopefully, now it is the time they finally see some action in Ukraine,” said Freddy Versluys, the head of OIP, as he toured the hangar.
4032.jpg
“Here we have the 50 Leopard 1s,” he said, pointing. “We also have 38 German Gepard tanks, 112 Austrian SK-105 light tanks, and 100 Italian VCC2 and 70 M113 armour carriers.”
3837.jpg
And while Germany has lifted its ban on exporting Leopards, other hurdles remain. OIP is still unable to sell its large stock of Austrian-made SK-105 light tanks, with Vienna not approving the exports. “It is a big shame because they are in good condition and can be prepared easily,” he said.
3626.jpg
For years, Versluys was unable to sell the Leopard 1s and Gepards as German law requires approval from Berlin for the re-export of its military equipment. But the chancellor Olaf Scholz’s decision last week on the Leopard 2s, which opened the floodgates for other European countries to follow suit, has opened up new possibilities.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent unprecedented western military support to Kyiv, had already led Versluys to sell 46 M113 light armoured vehicles to the UK, which then transferred them to Ukraine as part of a military package. Belgium, which has no tanks left in its defence stock, has explored the possibility of buying back the Leopard 1s it sold to Versluys.
In total, his firm has about 500 armoured vehicles in stock, “probably the widest private arsenal of tanks in Europe,” according to Versluys, who has a long history in the military sector.

After completing his military service, Versluys spent nine years working for the Belgian army in a division that was responsible for the quality control of tanks and ammunition. In 1989 he joined OIP, a firm that specialised in optical equipment, where he eventually set up OIP Land Systems, a subsidiary company that bought up old military equipment, banking that one day there would be a demand for it again.

“Everything we do is legal here, we go by the books and have all the licences needed,” he said, shrugging at the “arms dealer” label.

Theres a video I saw on youtube from the 80's, maybe early 90's? An interview with a former CIA agent. Where he said, the CIA would either infiltrate or subvert a major publication, in order to get public on side in an overseas conflict. Most of the time he would pose as an informant. Show the Journalist his ID.

Then he'd start telling the journalist information he suspected the Journalist already knew, this was about building trust between them that this informant was legit. The invention relates to the field of aircraft engineering, in particular to tactical
aircraft, providing detection and destruction of air, surface and ground targets.

A well-known multifunctional aircraft (Fomin A.V. "54-27. History of a fighter",
Moscow, "RA Intervestnik", 1999, p. passive countermeasures, surveillance and
aiming means (radar sighting system, optoelectronic aiming system), control and
registration system of parameters, communication system between aircraft and with
control points, flight and navigation system, countermeasures system, control system

piloting in manual and automatic control modes, built-in system control, inter-aircraft
navigation and exchange of tactical information in the group, guidance from
command and control centers, radar survey of airspace and the underlying surface,
airspace location, detection and tracking of ground and air targets, target designation
of weapons, setting active radar jamming, the use of uncorrectable weapons, as well
as aviation weapons (ASP) with passive thermal, passive and active radar heads

countermeasures.passive and active radar homing for ground, air and surface
targets, the use of passive countermeasures.passive and active radar homing for
ground, air and surface targets, the use of passive countermeasures.

As disadvantages of the known technical solution, it should be noted the high value
of the effective scattering surface (ESR), which determines the characteristics of the
detection of an aircraft by enemy radar equipment. For the famous

aircraft EPR value is about 10-15m2(here we consider the average value for the
selected angle).
The technical result, to which the invention is directed, is

in reducing the value of the radar visibility of the aircraft to an average value of the order of 0.1-1 m2.

The invention is illustrated by drawings, where figure 1 shows an aircraft integral
aerodynamic layout - top view; figure 2 - aircraft integral aerodynamic layout - bottom
view; figure 3 - aircraft integral aerodynamic layout - front view; figure 4 - section A-A
figure 2.; figure 5 - section B-B figure 2.

On the presented drawings, positions are indicated: 1

- fuselage,

2 - wing consoles,

3 - consoles of the all-moving horizontal tail (TsPGO), 4 - consoles of
the all-moving vertical tail (TsPVO), 5 - cockpit canopy,

6 - horizontal edges of the engine air intakes, 7 - fine-mesh nets
covering air emissions, 8 - lateral inclined edges of the engine
air intakes, 9 - a device that reduces the EPR of the power plant,

10 - flaps of the in-flight refueling boom compartment. The aircraft onboard

equipment complex includes: general aircraft equipment; indication system and
controls; a set of means of destruction, active and passive countermeasures;
observation and sighting means (radar sighting system, optical-electronic sighting
system); a system for monitoring and recording parameters, acommunication system
between aircraft and with control points; flight and navigation system; a system of
countermeasures; a control system for means of destruction and passive
countermeasures, providing navigation, piloting in manual and automatic control
modes; built-in system control; inter-aircraft navigation and exchange of tactical
information in a group, guidance from command and control centers, radar survey of
airspace and the underlying surface, detection and tracking of air and ground targets,
setting active radar jamming, uncorrectable weapons of destruction; as well as
aviation weapons with passive thermal, passive and active radar homing heads for
air, ground surface targets.
The EPR of the aircraft consists of the EPR of its following components: airframe;
power plant; optical and antenna systems of the onboard equipment complex;
outboard and retractable equipment in flight.

The value of the RCS of the airframe and the power plant is determined by three factors:

- the shape of the theoretical contours and the layout of the airframe, including
air intake and air channel;

- design of airframe units, technological and operational joints
skins, flaps, hatches and joints between the movable and fixed parts of the
aircraft airframe;

- use of radio-absorbing and shielding materials and coatings. The shape of the

theoretical contours and the layout of the airframe made it possible to reduce the
amount of energy reflected by EM waves in individual angles by redistributing the
maxima of the backscattering diagram to the minimum number of directions and to the
least dangerous sectors.
Constructive Measures

Cleaning the ASP inside the airframe made it possible to reduce the overall RCS by eliminating the
reflection of electromagnetic waves from the irradiating radars from the ASP and their triggers.

The implementation of the air intake channel S-shaped in combination with radio
absorbing coatings (RPC) provides a reduction in RCS in the axial directions. In other sectors
of the front hemisphere (FPS) - due to the screening of the input guide vane (VNA) of the
engine, from the elements of which the electromagnetic (EM) waves of the irradiating radar
are mainly reflected, which is a significant share (up to 60%) in the RCS of the airframe -
engine system in the PPS. The application of RPP on the walls of the air intake channel (АТ)
makes it possible to reduce the magnitude of the EM signals reflected from the VNA and re-
reflected onto the channel walls, thereby the overall level of the RCS of the air intake in the
ABL decreases.

The device 9 in the air intake channel to reduce the EPR of the engine in the front
hemisphere can be installed in a channel of any shape in front of the VNA, but it is
mainly installed in "straight" channels. The device 9 acts as a screen that partially
covers the VNA in the paraxial directions from the ingress of EM waves. In addition to
shielding, the device 9 divides the air intake channel in front of the AHA into a number
of separate cavities formed by cylindrical (or concentric or non-concentric) or flat
surfaces, while the flat surfaces can be parallel or intersecting. Each cavity has a
smaller cross-sectional area than the air intake channel in this zone. Such
segmentation with simultaneous coating of the walls of the RPP segments makes it
possible to reduce the value

The EM signals reflected from the VNA and re-reflected onto the walls of the cavities of the device 9,
thereby reducing the overall level of EPR of the VZ in the PPS.

Bringing the sweep angles of the leading and trailing edges of the bearing
surfaces, air intakes, hatch doors to two or three directions other than the axial one,
makes it possible to ensure that the global maxima of the backscatter diagram (BSR)
are reduced to these directions. Such a DOR causes a decrease in the overall level of
ESR in PPP.

The inclination of the sides of the fuselage 1 in the cross section, the inclination of the
vertical aerodynamic surfaces (vertical tail 4, side edges 8 VZ) to one direction in the cross
section makes it possible to reduce the EPR in the lateral hemisphere (BPS) due to the re-
reflection of the EM wave incident on the inclined surface of the airframe, in direction
other than the direction of the irradiating radar.

Screening of air intake and exhaust devices with structural elements, as well as
fine meshes, makes it possible to reduce or eliminate the RCS component from
airframe "inhomogeneities" (Such as a hole, slot, sinus) due to the fact that the linear
size of the mesh cell covering the inhomogeneity is less than % of the length of the
EM waves that irradiate the aircraft. In such a situation, the fine mesh acts as a
screen for the EM wave, which reduces the component of these inhomogeneities in
the EPR.

Closing the in-flight refueling boom compartment with flap 10 excludes the niche and
boom components from the overall EPR of the aircraft.

The use of all-moving vertical tail 4 allows to reduce the total area of the AO and,
as a result, to reduce the level of the signal reflected from the AO, which, in turn,
reduces the RCS value in the BPS.

The use of conductive sealants makes it possible to ensure electrical conductivity
between individual structural and technological elements of the airframe, which, in turn,
makes it possible to exclude the “inhomogeneities” component in the EPR of the aircraft
(such as a slot, joint) due to the fact that in the absence of electrical inhomogeneities,
there is no scattering of surface EM waves.

The use of RPP allows you to significantly reduce the level of global EPR maxima
due to the fact that the principle of operation of the RPP is to partially absorb the
energy of the EM wave incident on the material, therefore, to reduce the level of the
reflected radar signal.

The implementation of the glazing of the lantern metallized provides EM
impermeability in such a way that the glazing, in fact, is an impenetrable inclined wall
that reflects the incident EM wave away from the irradiating radar.

The main measures to reduce the component of the onboard equipment
complex in the EPR are as follows:

1. The use of frequency-selective structures in the fairing of the antennas, allowing
transmit radiation in the operating frequency range of its own antenna and be
impermeable to radiation of other frequency ranges (radiating radars). Thus, EM
waves incident on antenna radomes from irradiating radars are re-reflected (due
to the shape of the radomes formed by surfaces inclined to the vertical plane)
away from the direction of irradiation.

2. Turning the optical part of the optical sensors in the idle state with
applying RPP on the back side. Thus, in the non-working (passive) state of the
sensors (minimum RCS state), the sensor faces the direction

Page: 7

irradiating the radar side with the applied RPP, providing partial absorption of
incident EM waves, thereby reducing the RCS.

3. The use of shielding diaphragms in antenna compartments to eliminate the effect
wandering wave, when the irradiating wave, after repeated reflection in a closed
compartment, is amplified and radiated into outer space. The shielding diaphragm is installed
around the antenna post in such a way that it surrounds the post along the periphery. RPP is
applied to the diaphragm wall facing the irradiating radar. When irradiated, the protective
diaphragm prevents the EM wave from penetrating inside the antenna compartment, while
simultaneously absorbing part of the energy of the incident wave and reducing the RCS.

4. Deviation of the plane of the antennas from the vertical and, consequently, the deviation
the normals of the antennas from the horizontal plane provide a change in the direction of the
reflected EM waves away from the irradiating radar, thereby reducing the EPR of the antennas.

5. Reducing the total number of antennas and using the design of the units
airframe as antennas (for example, vertical tail as a communication antenna).
Reducing the total number of antennas reduces the overall RCS, tk. each antenna
contributes a certain component to the EPR. The use of an existing airframe assembly
(VO) as an antenna makes it possible not to use a separate antenna, which naturally
reduces the RCS, compared with the option of a separate antenna.

6. Application of an antenna-feeder system based on low-reflective antennas
Radar wavelength range. The low-reflective properties of the antennas are ensured due to the fact
that they are not protruding beyond the outer contours of the aircraft and do not introduce a
component into the EPR of the aircraft due to direct reflection of EM waves.

Comprehensive implementation of the set of these measures provides the
maximum effect of reducing visibility with a minimum negative impact on the
aerodynamic, weight, technological, operational and other characteristics of the aircraft.

The SK-105 is a bizarre vehicle, using a weird contra rotating turret, that essentially has the gun fixed in place, with the entire turret elevating and depressing as well as rotating.

They're not going anywhere near Ukraine because even though Austria have sold them, they can still stop their resale, and they've said they're not allowing any weapons transfers.

Incidentally that Belgian company didn't just buy the tanks, they bought the machine tools to manufacture spares .

The Leopard 1's are a better bet, they're still in wide service, and there's plenty of spares available. They're also 25 tonnes lighter than the Leopard 2 and will be a lot easier for the Ukrainians to manage with their existing rail stock and recovery assets.

There's a few, the best-known is Operation Mockingbird. During the Cold War, Congress passed a bill called the Smith-Mundt Act, which prohibited domestic distribution of propaganda meant for foreign audiences. The CIA executed Mockingbird completely ignoring the letter of the law, and continues to get away with it.

For all of Noam's lolcow-ness, he did author a good book a while back: Manufacturing Consent. It's a good read, and describes how Mockingbird hasn't gone away.

Bulgaria’s Parliament declared the Holodomor in Ukraine a Genocide - Two Parties Voted "Against"

With 134 votes "in favor", 26 "against" and no "abstentions", the National Assembly in a joint project proposed by the Foreign Policy Committee declared the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933 a genocide and categorically condemned its perpetrators.
The decision also declares every last Saturday of November as a Day of Honor and Remembrance for the victims of the Holodomor in Ukraine.
The National Assembly designates any denial, justification and belittling of this genocide, as an act of insulting the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holodomor, it is written in the document.
Initially, two draft resolutions were submitted on the subject - to the PG of "Democratic Bulgaria" (DB) on declaring an act of genocide of the Holodomor in Ukraine 1932-1933 and the other republics of the former Soviet Union and on the GERB-SDS on declaring the Holodomor Famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933 for genocide. In the end, the committee on foreign policy united around a common project, explained its chairman Ekaterina Zaharieva.
The Great Famine in 1932-1933 - Holodomor, covered the main grain regions of the former USSR - Ukraine, the North Caucasus, the Lower and Middle Volga, Kazakhstan, Western Siberia and the Southern Urals. Seven to eight million people died of starvation during this period, three and a half million of them in Ukraine, two million in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and two to two and a half million in Russia.
The reasons marked the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor and emphasized that it was one of the worst mass crimes against humanity "perpetrated by the inhumane Soviet communist regime, during which more than eight million lives were destroyed, among them many children and dozens thousands of Ukrainian and Moldavian Bulgarians".
I believe that this decision is important for the Bulgarian citizens to assess what happened,” said the chairperson of the committee on foreign policy Ekaterina Zaharieva (GERB-SDS).
Kostadin Kostadinov ("Vazrazhdane") pointed out that, when talking about genocide, it should be proved. It is indisputable that millions of people are being starved in the USSR, he noted. The goal was not to kill an ethnic group, but the kulak class, i.e. this is not genocide, but class extermination entirely in the spirit of Marxist ideology, explained Kostadinov. His parliamentary group was against the adoption of such a project.
The famine of 1932-33 bears the marks of ethnic cleansing, opposed Krasimir Valchev from GERB-SDS. It also coincides with the growth processes of the Ukrainian national movement, with the destruction of the Ukrainian elite, he added. This is one of the characteristics of ethnic annihilation, the deputy stressed.
Tsoncho Ganev from "Vazrazhdane" accused "Democratic Bulgaria" of hypocrisy because they did not dare to open a word about the Armenian genocide and most likely deny it.
It is enough that today we are faced with a great opportunity to obtain a broad consensus on topics on which we can be above petty political talk, pointed out Stoyan Mihalev, among the contributors to the DB project. We are not a court, but a public forum and as such we have the right to give an assessment, pointed out his colleague Atanas Slavov. During his speech, the meeting was briefly interrupted due to remarks between deputies in the hall.
We started this National Assembly by giving arms to Ukraine and we are ending with the Holodomor, were these the national priorities, was this what the National Assembly should have looked at, asked Borislav Gutsanov from the Bulgarian Socialist Party. And asked for the document to be withdrawn. Why are we interpreting history in a way that brings nothing to our country, asked Gutsanov. And announced that BSP is also against the proposed declaration.
When we talk about the priorities of the National Assembly, I ask if the changes in the Electoral Code were really one of the main ones for the Bulgarian society, turned to the socialist Miroslav Ivanov from "We Continue the Change". We must have the courage to point out such acts of genocide so that they do not happen in the future, he believes.
The deputy also asked why BSP left the hall today when declarations were being read on the occasion of February 1 - Day of remembrance and respect for the victims of the communist regime. I believe that BSP is not the successor of the Communist Party, he added.

German Social Democrats grasp at world power

The Social Democratic Party (SPD)-led German government is aggressively stepping up its war policy. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s announcement of the delivery of Leopard-2 battle tanks to Ukraine last week has been followed by calls for the delivery of aircraft. While Scholz still rejects this, at least publicly, SPD Co-Chairwoman Saskia Esken, interviewed on last Sunday’s “Report from Berlin” program, did not rule out sending fighter jets to Kiev.

The new Social Democratic defence minister, Boris Pistorius, used his first days in office to promote an even more comprehensive rearmament and militarization of society. “The 100 billion euros won’t be enough,” he said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, referring to the Bundeswehr [Armed Forces] special fund recently passed in the Bundestag [federal parliament]. He added that it was a “mistake” to “suspend compulsory military service,” since “the army is at the center of society.”

It is becoming increasingly clear that the ruling class regards the NATO war against Russia as an opportunity to implement its long-cherished plans to become a world power and once again make Germany the leading military force, 90 years after Hitler seized power. A strategy paper recently presented by the SPD’s “Commission on International Politics” titled “Social Democratic Responses to a World in Transition” underscores this.

A more appropriate title for the paper, which was prepared under the leadership of SPD Co-Chair Lars Klingbeil, would be “Social Democrats Grasp at World Power.” At the heart of the paper is German imperialism’s fateful claim to “lead Europe in order to lead the world,” which led to two catastrophic world wars and unspeakable crimes in the 20th century.

The Social Democratic great power rhetoric might be somewhat different—at least when it comes to phrases about human rights and democracy—than under the Kaiser or the Nazis. But the goal is the same. The ruling class sees the current struggle to redivide the world as an opportunity for German imperialism to reassert itself as a leading military power.

Right at the beginning of the SPD paper it is stated, “We live in a world in upheaval. The days of a uni-or bi-polar order are over. New power centres are vying to control the narrative, expand influence and dictate the terms of cooperation. Alongside the US and China, as well as Europe, more and more states of the Global South are laying claim to shaping the future of the world order... While the contours of a new global order are still evolving, it is clear: We stand at the dawn of a multi-polar age.”

In this situation, the document says, Germany has a “great responsibility to help shape the new order that will emerge... not least because of its size and economic strength.” First and foremost, this requires organizing Europe. For “only from a strong Europe can we stand up for our values and interests globally—on our own we are too small to exert any influence.” Therefore, it is in Germany’s “very own interest to play a leading role in strengthening Europe.”

The paper’s summary states, “For Social Democracy, a strong Europe is the most important political task of the coming years. Only as a sovereign, attractive centre can Europe help shape the global order according to its values and interests. Europe must embrace its role as a geopolitical player and invest more in its own security.”

The current paper differs from previous foreign policy strategy papers primarily in that it emphasizes even more explicitly the military component of Germany’s great power ambitions. “One’s own strength is defined... also by military capabilities,” it asserts.

It goes on to say that “in addition to diplomacy and an engaged development policy, an effective peace policy also includes the military capabilities of our security and defence alliances. The Bundeswehr makes an essential contribution to the capabilities of the EU and NATO. It must be equipped in such a way that it can fully perform its tasks at all times.”

In this context, the SPD paper emphasizes that the 100-billion-euro Bundeswehr special fund serves not only to arm the German army, but also to militarize Europe. “The turn of the times should be the catalyst for a common European security and defence policy,” it states. Under the heading “Strong Partners in NATO,” the authors write, “We will work to ensure that greater use is made of cooperation among EU member states to strengthen the European pillar in NATO and expand the EU’s military capacities and capabilities.”

The goal is to transform Europe into a powerful war machine. It is “important for the European Union to overcome the inefficient and ineffective fragmentation in its defence policy,” the document asserts. There must be a “self-confident commitment to joint European defence efforts and more cooperation in production and procurement.” This will strengthen “Europe’s security and sovereignty.”

The German initiative “to build a European air and missile defence system” is “a ground-breaking step into the future,” the paper declares. Europe must be able to “defend itself conventionally against attacks... and have corresponding deterrent capabilities.” For this, Europe needs “coordinated defence spending, a rapid reaction force, and a real EU headquarters for a clear command structure.”

It continues in this spirit. In addition to “measures to improve infrastructure and military mobility, including in cyberspace,” the SPD leadership calls for “an independent EU Council of Ministers for Defence” to coordinate and implement the establishment of an independent German-European major power policy. “More autonomy” presupposes a “greater capacity to act,” the paper states.

The document makes no secret of the fact that the German ruling class is preparing to assert its economic and geopolitical goals more independently of the US and, in the future, against it. The US and NATO are “still guarantors of European security,” but “President Donald Trump’s term in office in particular... made it clear that Europe must position itself more independently and invest more in its own security.”

To justify and whitewash the war offensive, the paper spreads the familiar lies. At one point it calls the “Russian war of aggression against Ukraine” the “most brutal break to date with basic principles of the international order that were painstakingly established after World War II.” Of course, the SPD propagandists know full well that the wars in the Balkans, the Middle East and Central Asia, which were supported by Germany in violation of international law, have reduced entire countries to rubble and cost millions of lives.

In Ukraine, too, the main aggressor is not Moscow, but the imperialist powers. With its systematic military encirclement of Russia, NATO provoked the reactionary intervention by the Putin regime in the first place. Now, NATO is escalating the conflict further and further in order to subjugate the resource-rich country.

All the phrases about human rights cannot hide the fact that what is really at stake are predatory imperialist interests. The paper states, “For economic security, we need an uninterruptible supply of critical raw materials. Without rare earths or lithium, [computer] chips and batteries cannot be produced today.” What is required, therefore, is “a German and European raw materials strategy” that “sets economic incentives for Europe’s own raw materials production and strengthens partnerships with resource-rich states worldwide.”

Perhaps the most brazen lie is the authors’ claim that “fairly distributed prosperity and strong social cohesion” form “the basis for the attractiveness of a geopolitically-minded Europe.” In fact, everywhere in Europe, rearmament is accompanied by massive attacks on the living standards of the working class. While energy prices are skyrocketing because of war policies, and inflation is at its highest in decades, the costs of war are being imposed entirely on the general population.

The SPD sees its task as imposing the policy of war and social devastation against growing social and political opposition. This is precisely what is hidden behind the clarion call to the military and for a “self-contained, resilient European Union” in the strategy paper.

The working class must draw the necessary conclusions from all of this. More than a century after the SPD’s historic betrayal on August 4, 1914, when it agreed to the Kaiser’s war credits and supported World War I, social democracy is the leading party of German imperialism. The Left Party and the Greens support it in this, forming coalitions with the SPD at the federal and state level. Like the right-wing parties in the Bundestag, they conduct themselves as rabid militarists.

The only party that opposes the warmongering is the Sozialistische Gleichheitspartei (Socialist Equality Party, SGP). As the German section of the Fourth International, it is fighting to build an international mass movement against war and its source, capitalism. The SGP is participating in the Berlin state elections to give voice to the enormous opposition to the war in Ukraine and to the return of German militarism. We call on all opponents of war to come to the central anti-war rally at Potsdamer Platz on February 4 at 11 am and vote SGP on February 12!

Russia On Course To Lose Its War In Ukraine – OpEd

A year ago, few could imagine that if Russia invaded Ukraine, it would leave with anything less than a military victory although even then some did point out that such a victory would be Pyrrhic because Moscow would find itself incapable of integrating its conquest under the rule of the Kremlin.

But now ever more people in Ukraine, in the West, and in Russia itself are talking about the possibility that Russia can lose the war and discussing what Moscow needs to do to prevent that defeat from having even more serious consequences for the country. The latest to do so is Sergey Shelin (newtimes.ru/articles/detail/234996).

The Russian commentator says that he made what for him is “an unexpected discovery: the Russian Federation really has a serious chance of losing this war and thus being thrown back to its historical borders.”

“Until now,” Shelin says, he had thought that Ukraine was “struggling to fight on an equal footing and that only with luck would it be able to attack in any serious way.” But now, keeping things equal in that sense is at best the most the Russian Federation can even hope to aspire to.

He writes: “I was preparing an article about the material side of the war, about the war as a struggle between two military economic machines. It is not yet ready and will not be published very soon. But here’s what I see in the entire set of numbers – at the level of these machines, the Russian Federation simply has no trump cards.”

Putin hasn’t spent more than the opposite side has and thus does not have an army better than the Ukrainian one. Instead, it is worse quantitatively as well as qualitatively. And given Ukraine’s allies, if the Kremlin leader were to double his spending on the military, the other side could easily counter.

As a result, Shelin says, Moscow does not now have and can’t achieve “the strategic advantage needed for an offensive war.” It has enough for a defensive one but not the other and so will be forced gradually or even quickly to retreat from what it now holds given the existing balance of forces.

For there to be any other outcome, he continues, Moscow will need a stroke of luck or a radical change in Ukraine itself or in its allies. And those who talk about a nuclear strike need to remember that such a move “will not go unanswered.” In this situation, the Kremlin should be suing for peace rather than acting as if it can win in the end.

Ukraine EU membership: No short cuts on joining, officials warn ahead of summit

Ukraine's hopes of quickly joining the EU are being rebuffed, ahead of a historic meeting in Kyiv.

An EU-Ukraine summit takes place on Friday, with top officials set to arrive in the Ukrainian capital.

Ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Ukraine had set what he called an "ambitious goal" of joining the EU in two years.

But a group of member states have warned it should be made clear to Kyiv that this will not be possible.

Last June Ukraine gained EU candidacy status at record speed, in what President Volodymyr Zelensky said was a unique and historic moment. While it is a first step to membership, the process typically takes many years and some countries are currently languishing in the queue.

Mr Zelensky said ahead of the summit that it would be a week of European integration, and Kyiv was expecting decisions from its EU partners in line with progress achieved despite the full-scale war with Russia.

However, few within Brussels see a two-year goal as a realistic aim, with concerns that any unrealistic promises from Brussels will lead to disillusionment down the line.

"That's not what Ukraine needs," said one EU diplomat.

Another spoke of pressure, coming from countries such as Poland, to speed up the process.

"The slightest deviation from a more, more, more line is criticised as being on the wrong side of the war. Anything that smacks of criticism of Ukraine is almost considered as heresy or collaboration with the Russians."

A draft EU statement, to be released after the summit, reiterates a pledge that Ukraine's future lies within the EU and acknowledges "considerable efforts" made in recent months towards meeting objectives underpinning its candidate status and carrying out reforms.

But sources have told the BBC that part of the statement has been changed because it was too "forward leaning". France, Germany, Italy and the Benelux nations are all said to have warned against striking an overly optimistic tone.

Would-be EU members are required to align with a large body or rules, laws and standards. Ukraine's efforts at reform are being widely praised but there has been, as yet, no public EU assessment of progress.

A fresh wave of anti-corruption raids was carried out on Wednesday ahead of the summit, and officials released images of a raid on the house of one of the country's richest men, Ihor Kolomoisky.

Mr Shmyhal said on Telegram that Ukraine planned to implement all seven of the European Commission's recommendations, which involve further measures against corruption, tightening laws against money-laundering and the excessive influence of Ukraine's wealthy oligarchs.

The aim of the summit is also for the EU to show solidarity with Ukraine, emphasising the historic nature of holding such a meeting in a warzone, and sending a political signal to Russia that support for Kyiv isn't waning.

Announcements will include doubling the training mission for Ukrainian troops to 30,000 soldiers and €25m to help rid liberated territory of land mines.

An update on Ukraine's progress towards membership is expected in the spring with a more formal assessment to follow later in the year.

Senior officials say Ukraine's future membership is not in doubt but no one is willing to spell out an exact time-line.
"We will do it but there are no short-cuts," said one diplomat.

Volunteer & contractors training Ukrainian soldiers

I've never heard of TDI before, it's an interesting outfit.
Trident Defense Initiative (TDI) was founded shortly after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Our founder Dan, a former British soldier who joined the Ukrainian marines, found himself caught in Bucha and cut off from his unit in Mariupol. After the siege of the Azovstal steelworks Dan could not re-establish contact with his unit and his contract with the Ukrainian military soon ended.

Not wanting to give up the fight, D decided to find a way to pass on his experience to train and prepare Ukrainian soldiers and civilians for warfare, with both medical and tactical training.

This vision became TRIDENT DEFENSE INITIATIVE.

We have already built a dedicated team of Ex-NATO instructors and highly skilled specialist civilians within trident defense initiative, all of whom are rigorously vetted to ensure that we can offer comprehensive training that matches the skills and needs of our students.

We are the only organization in Ukraine willing and able to train alongside units at their forward training camps, working at the direct request of individual unit commanders.

This allows us to ensure that every unit we train is official and recognized by the Ukrainian government.

We have previously trained units of the Territorial defense force, National guards, Regular army, and SF units.

TDI Tactical Defense Training
NATO standard training Trident Defense Initiative teaches units:
  • Fire Maneuver
  • Weapon Handling/Safety
  • Recon
  • Anti-tank
  • Machine gunner
  • Drone piloting
  • Mine identification and detection
  • Ambush/Counter-Ambush Tactics
  • Basic field-craft
  • Advanced tactics
  • Vehicle Check points
  • Enemy POW Handling/POW Treatment (In-line with the Geneva Convention)
  • Tracking/counter tracking
  • R&S Intel collection
  • Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance
  • Camouflage and Concealment

TDI Medical
Team Medical training Trident Defense Initiative teaches Medical personnel :

Trident Defense Initiative offer 3 packages to students, a 1 day TAC-MED course, a 1 week TCCC instructors course and a 3 week Team medic course.

  • Tactical Field Care
  • Care under Fire
  • Casualty Evacuation
  • Deliberate trauma assessments
  • Vital signs
  • Advanced airway treatment
  • Needle chest decompression
  • Splinting
  • C-Spine Packaging and Movement
  • Casualty collection point operations
  • Triage
  • Hasty and Deliberate
  • Basic Pharmacology
  • Basic Introduction to IV systems
  • Wound Packing
  • Compression Dressing use
  • Pelvic Stabilization
  • Treating Amputations
  • Medical operations planning
Trident Defense Initiative also offers our students a Cadaver Lab where students are able to get hands on experience putting their training to practice on Cadavers, TDI are the only organization able to offer this as part of their training package within Ukraine.
They actually train with cadavers, probably with every type of wound imaginable, and no doubt there's an endless supply of corpses to train on; our medics don't even get to do that.

TDI Founders

DANIEL RIDLEY

Dan, founder and president of TDI, has lived in Ukraine since 2018, when he joined the Ukrainian marines, serving honorably for four years.

His previous experience in the British army, and volunteer medical service in Syria and Myanmar prepared Dan for the challenges he would eventually face when Russia launched an all-out invasion in Ukraine.

From a rudimentary aid station in the basement of his apartment building, Dan would go on to found TDI, the only organization of its kind in Ukraine.

HEAD INSTRUCTOR - CHRIS EDWARDS

Chris Edwards, TDI’s head instructor, came to Ukraine a few weeks after the Russian invasion began. He initially worked alongside two organizations extracting civilians from war-torn areas as well as delivering aid, supplies, and vehicles to the front lines.

When these organizations eventually faded away Chris, along with a handful of other volunteers contacted John.
Chris then joined john along with other NATO ex-servicemen on the pilot course in Kyiv, forming what would go on to become TDI.

As head instructor Chris is putting to use his previous British military training and passing on his knowledge to Ukrainian soldiers, and ensures a high level of training is delivered by all TDI instructors

Fighting Wagner is like a zombie movie
Southwest of the city of Bakhmut, Ukrainian soldiers Andriy and Borisych live in a candle-lit bunker cut into the frozen earth. For several weeks they have been confronting hundreds of fighters belonging to the Russian private military contractor Wagner throwing themselves against Ukrainian defenses.

Disguised in a balaclava, Andriy recounts one seemingly endless firefight when they came under attack by a flood of Wagner fighters.

“We were fighting for about 10 hours in a row. And it wasn’t like just waves, it was uninterrupted. So it was just like they didn’t stop coming.”

Their AK-47 rifles became so hot from constant firing, Andriy says, that they had to keep changing them.

“It was about 20 soldiers on our side. And let’s say 200 from their side,” he says.

The Wagner way of war is to send a first wave of attackers that mainly comprises raw recruits straight out of Russian prisons. They know little of military tactics and are poorly equipped. Most just hope that if they survive their six-month contract they can go home rather than back to a cell

“They make the group – let’s say from 10 soldiers – reach 30 meters, then they start digging in to keep the position,” Andriy says of Wagner.

Norway might send the CV90 to Ukraine.
Norway is considering to send CV90 multirole variant to Ukraine, TV2 reports. Norway has 16 of this type. "We don't comment on future contributions but we have a good dialogue with Ukraine and allies about the needs," Defense Minister Arild Gram said.
iwuyt79rpd8.jpg
TV 2 is informed that Norway is investigating donating the CV90 armored multi-role vehicle to Ukraine. It is the Ministry of Defense that has asked the Defense Staff to look into whether it is possible to donate a number of CV90 multi-role bomb launchers.
The Ministry of Defense informs TV2 that the government is planning a larger contribution with military material, and is continuously assessing whether Norway should send more weapons and material to Ukraine.
- The government continuously considers whether Norway should send more weapons/material to Ukraine. We do not comment on these assessments and any ongoing or future contributions. We have a good dialogue with Ukraine and allies about the needs. We will support Ukraine as long as necessary, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp) to TV 2.
TV 2 has previously reported that Norway will donate eight Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

Always have to keep in mind that it's likely not indicative of the Wagner as a whole, there's most certainly the professional core of it and the expendable fodder they use.
The sheer cruelty of it all is chilling. Just throwing meat at Ukrainian positions to erode them, it's going to inevitably eat into Ukraine's reserves while Russia has plenty of walking corpses to spare (although based on reports I'm observing, the supply in prisons is drying up, more of them are now informed of what's actually going on and what Wagner's promises are worth).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we shouldn't underestimate them. This strategy is wasteful and horrific, there's nothing about it that's worth praise, doesn't take a genius to come up with something like this, but it's going to have some effect. Troops is one thing the West isn't going to give Ukraine, while pretty much everything else can be replenished.
@Pocket Dragoon I'm not surprised there's a lot of ex-military vets over there doing training, mostly because there's a lot of them over here with limited job prospects. Say what you will about British equipment and generals but their men know how to fight, and are just as stubborn now as in 1940.
According to my brother, military contract pays really well, at least by Ukrainian standards. Can't give you specific numbers, but I'll try asking next time I get the chance.
I don't see anything wrong with compensating people monetarily for risking their necks, especially for the good cause.

Always have to keep in mind that it's likely not indicative of the Wagner as a whole, there's most certainly the professional core of it and the expendable fodder they use.
Well basically what they do is throw in the Machine Gun fodder, let the Ukrainians shoot up the MG fodder so they can figure out where the Ukrainians are, then shoot a bunch of artillery at the positions that just shredded the MG fodder.
Then when night falls send in the better-trained Wagner guys to go assault the positions that didn't shred the MG fodder as bad.

De Welt says it's over for Ukraine. Chances of winning are practically zero.

I'm inclined to agree with the krauts this time.

Why it is almost impossible that Ukraine will still win

As bitter as it is, a victory for Ukraine is becoming less likely every day. Kiev's army is running out of men and material, the enemy is adapting better and has massive supplies. No wonder Western diplomats are now talking more and more about a ceasefire.
Earlier in the year, Ukraine spread optimism amid the terrible war that has been forced on the country by Russian aggression for almost a year now. This year, declared the head of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, will bring "joy and victory." But how realistic is a victory for Ukraine?
It is almost impossible that Ukraine will emerge victorious from this war. According to the definition of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a victory means the reconquest of all occupied territories, including Crimea. But from today's perspective and under the given circumstances - which means above all the lack of support from the West - this is impossible. Russia currently occupies about 18 percent of Ukrainian territory. This value is more likely to rise than fall in the future. Unfortunately.
What are the reasons for the foreseeable success of Russia?
"One suspects that Russia will not wait until the main battle tanks are there"

First: In the debates of the past few weeks, it has finally become clear that the USA, Germany and other NATO allies are more afraid of the war spreading into NATO territory than of the threat to Western security from Russian territorial conquests in Ukraine. The logic of Western decision-makers is: the more powerful, deadly and precise the weapons deliveries become, the greater the risk of a "spillover" effect. The West suffers from a kind of self-deterrence and therefore supports Ukraine only in such a way that it does not have to capitulate immediately.
Second, Russia has so far destroyed 60 to 70 percent of Ukraine's critical infrastructure. There is no telling that Kyiv will receive sufficient air defense systems like Iris-T, Nasams and Patriots from the West to stop the Russian rampage of destruction. On the contrary: the previous meager deliveries from the West are a license for the Russian armed forces, which according to the Norwegian chief of staff Eirik Kristoffersen still have a huge arsenal of missiles and drones.
However, Ukraine will be less and less able to repair the destroyed infrastructure - the material for this is becoming increasingly scarce and would have to be supplied from Russia. However, without sufficient energy, it is becoming increasingly difficult to supply people with it. In addition, the Ukrainian armaments industry urgently needs electricity.
Mobilization potential: 30 million
Third: Russia's military is trying to counter Western precision weapons with masses and can draw on sufficient resources to do so. This is especially true in the tank sector. According to the London-based think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Russia should soon have 4,000 deployable tanks - a crushing mass that not only poses a great risk to the western Leopard tanks, but also enables Russia at any time to enter the to go on the offensive.
Fourth, Ukraine is running out of soldiers as the war goes on. Depending on how you look at it, you are already in at least the eighth wave of mobilization, meanwhile men over 60 years of age are being sent to the front. On the other hand, Russia will soon deploy 200,000 fresh soldiers, and it is said that up to 500,000 more soldiers could follow in the summer. Moscow has a mobilization potential of around 30 million people.
Fifth: For the reasons mentioned, Russia is not only likely to emerge from this war as a military victor with territorial gains, but also as a political victor: According to the Vienna Institute for International Economic Comparisons (WIIW), the economic recovery of Ukraine will be significantly more difficult than the "National Council for Reconstruction of Ukraine" forecast. After a ceasefire or peace negotiations, NATO membership is likely to be ruled out indefinitely, and Ukraine's accession to the EU will – in the best-case scenario – take much longer than Kyiv is currently demanding.

Edit as not to doublepost: In case some western taxpayers wondered where their money is going, this is a good opportunity to catch a glimpse of it.
Ukrainian media publish footage of searches at the ex-Deputy Minister of Defense of the country Oleksandr Mironyuk

It is reported that this is a video from the August searches at the person involved in the investigation of procurement fraud in the MoD of Ukraine.

Mironyuk stated that the money found in his possession did not belong to him. It turns out that they were lent to him by 86-year-old Kharkiv resident Eleonora Dumins in January 2022...Mironyuk was fired because of the scandal with the purchase of bulletproof vests

Joe Biden Offered Vladimir Putin 20 Percent of Ukraine to End War: Report

CIA Director William Burns reportedly offered Russian President Vladimir Putin a fifth of Ukraine's territory to end the war as part of a peace plan drawn up on behalf of President Joe Biden.

Burns is believed to have submitted the plan in mid-January to put an end to the war, which began on February 24, 2022. The story was reported by Swiss-German newspaper NZZ on Thursday, citing high-ranking German foreign politicians.

Both Kyiv and Moscow reportedly rejected the proposal.

According to the newspaper, the proposal offered "around 20 percent of Ukraine's territory"—approximately the size of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.

Kyiv reportedly shut down the proposal "because they are not willing to have their territory divided" while Russian officials said they "will win the war in the long run anyway," NZZ reported.

Newsweek has contacted the Biden administration and the foreign ministries of Ukraine and Russia for comment.
