Patrick's comments about sex in stories got me thinking, and after listening to that gut-wrenching podcast all the way through, puts it in a far more painful light. I think Rick genuinely didn't listen and the tweet was just poorly timed, but it still illustrates the problem quite nicely.

A little amore in your adventure story isn't too bad, it spices things up and titillates the reader. But there's a difference that and just suddenly turning your story into pornography out of nowhere, in stark contrast to the tone and narrative of the rest of the book. It makes it seem like you couldn't control yourself. And it's especially bad when it includes rape, underage sex, etc. Don't get it wrong, I'm a believer that you can write about anything you want, but when it's awkwardly inserted into an otherwise unrelated story and the transgressive acts are treated as benign or even glorified, that's a huge glaring red flag.

If you write a fucked up porn story I'm not gonna be shocked it has fucked up sex acts. If you're writing Punky Brewster but In Space and suddenly your Punky-expy gets raped by tentacles when she's only 10 and then it just never comes up again, I'm gonna think there's something seriously fucked up going on with the author.
