School Apologizes for Serving Chicken and Waffles Plus Watermelon During Black History Month

Food-service vendor Aramark is facing criticism for serving students an "inexcusably insensitive" meal for Black History Month.

On Feb. 1, Nyack Middle School students were offered chicken and waffles with watermelon for lunch. The Nyack, N.Y. school says that the district's food vendor changed the original planned hot lunch menu without notice and served this meal instead.

In a letter shared with parents on Thursday, which was obtained by PEOPLE, principal David Johnson said, "We are extremely disappointed by this regrettable situation and apologize to the entire Nyack community for the cultural insensitivity displayed by our food service provider. I am disappointed that Aramark would serve items that differed from the published monthly menu. Especially items that reinforce negative stereotypes concerning the African-American Community."

Later that day, Aramark apologized, calling the incident a "mistake."

"While our menu was not intended as a cultural meal, we acknowledge that the timing was inappropriate, and our team should have been more thoughtful in its service," the company said in a statement on Nyack's website. "This was a mistake and does not represent the values of our company, and we are committed to doing better in the future."

The statement continued to say that the company will work with the district "so employees who work in the schools participate in training that aligns to the Nyack School District's vision and commitment to equity-driven work. We believe this will provide a good learning opportunity to deepen understanding on the impact of systemic biases and negative stereotypes concerning the African-American Community."

Aramark did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

This is not the first time that Aramark has found itself in hot water for racially stereotyped menus. In 2018, the food vendor served NYU students a "Black History Month Menu" with ribs, collard greens, cornbread, smashed yams, mac and cheese, red Kool-Aid and watermelon-flavored water. The incident angered students, according to CNN, and eventually prompting the university to stop using Aramark as their food provider in 2019.

Similarly, back in 2011, the food-service company offered students at the University of California Irvine "MLK Holiday Special: Chicken and Waffles," according to a Los Angeles Timesarticle.

Which is so funny, because the woke work cafeteria always serves stereotypical food in honor of different cultures during their holidays. I wouldn't be surprised if they do a chicken and waffle bar later in the month. I wonder at what age it becomes appreciation instead of a hate crime to the same people who would usually object.

When did fried chicken and watermelon become a black thing? When did waffles become a black thing? Doesn't basically everyone in South USA eat that shit?

And I don't think the students would object to being served something that doesn't taste like it got fished out of a garbage dumpster for once.

This shit has happened every February for the last 3 or 4 years. Get over yourself. Only issue here should have been if the food was cooked all the way through and not rotten.

Lunches became prison tier during Obama's administration and I don't think that was ever fixed so God forbid the children get an actual enjoyable lunch for once.

I'd be so fucking pissed if I was in school and was going to have something good like chicken and waffles but then it got cancelled because niggers got their feelings hurt.

(Fried chicken is Scottish anyway isn't it)

This is what's fucked up. They just had a meal. They weren't thinking about race and stereotypes. Yet people who are, complain. They then respond by saying they need to also be constantly thinking about race and stereotypes.

This is where identity politics bullshit just gives dumb powers to people to complain about everything. NOTHING was achieved by this except some people being ultra sensitive over nothing and getting to laud pointless power other some other people who did nothing wrong.

I didn't read the article (reading is gay) but I'm going to call bullshit on any black people actually getting upset, too. When I was in high school we had to do a certain number of community service hours every year, and I got some of my hours on MLK day doing some volunteer work. I was one of the only white kids there, and when the organizers announced that lunch would be provided by a local fried chicken place, the entire auditorium erupted with cheers. Black people like fried chicken. White people like fried chicken. Everyone likes fried chicken. It's not racist.

Next year they should celebrate with a big old plate of German food and see how the kids like it.

Chicken and waffles is a pretty common meal. Everyone likes it. But yeah sure make it about your stupid ass month and you. God knows you don't get enough attention and special treatment.

I never understood the chicken with waffles thing. It sounds like such a retarded and schizophrenic food pairing. Do you put pancake syrup on the waffles? Does it also get on the chicken? If so, that's gross. So many questions. I also question that fried chicken and waffles was ever a southern food. I think it's just something niggers invented in the past 25 years, while pretending it's some kind of traditional southern soul food.

Lunches were already shit before that.
