I think it's half "he really wants to be a women" and half "please godbear, I have broke your name but please grant me a lesbian". He probably is so goddamned confused that he can barely explain it. I mean, he have a decade of hating the gays and now he is essentially one of them. If he wasn't such a jackass in every other capaicty I would probably feel some sort of sympathy like I do for other folks doing the trans thing.

Name changes don't work like that. He's still his SSN/EIN regardless of what fruity name he wants, and those debts will follow him until he claims bankruptcy, and even then not all debts are discharged by bankruptcy

^ true, but part of the purpose of requiring a court filing is to get it in the court record under oath that you're not trying to get a name change in order to commit fraud or evade obligations, he'll be asked about that at his hearing.
So even if he has ulterior motives now, he'll know he can't do that in the end.

If ever there was an argument for making SRS mandatory for a gender marker change, Chris is it.
Since it costs ~$25,000 and two therapist letters it tends to keep everyone who isn't a legitimate transsexual from getting it.
At least Virginia seems to require at least a hormone therapy regimine and a medical professional overseeing and signing off on it to get the marker changed... has Chris actually managed to find a doctor who is medically treating him for this?

I think the "Chris had an unusual reverence for the name Christian Weston Chandler" argument is a bit of an miscategorization. Certainly he did, but that is because he has an odd reverence for all names. For fucks sake, he remembers and sometimes refers to a dumb Spanish class nickname from high school.
He also refers to his friends, sweethearts, and enemies by their full names a lot more than most people do. The names of his parents are oddly important to him. The names of commercial products are important.
So I don't know if he sees it as a huge betrayal of GodBear or anyone changing his name. He might overhype the significance of it a little bit, but only because he overblows the importance of getting a female name.
