President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

There are more details about Budanov here:
Not feeling like posting the whole article as it's largely opinion not news.
But he seems to be a somewhat weird dude, only 37, targeted with car bombs probably by Russia, yet also a glowie himself maybe involved directly in assassination ops. He correctly predicted invasion when Ukraine politicians insisted on TV it's just Russian posturing and bluffing. But he also made, to put it politely, "optimistic" statements about how much ammo Russia has and the sort of shit you see on NAFO twitter.
We'll see. Intelligence is clearly of paramount importance for Ukraine.

Sounds like the Ukrainians getting serious about cracking down on corruption, or at the very least are putting on a show about it. I suspect it's a mix of both, nothing like a war to motivate some actual problem solving. At the same time that shit takes generations to really root out.
Not just war, but an invasion and an existential threat to your existence as a nation

Worse. Those were bootlegs of popular records, purely because up until 80s, the Soviet recording industry basically produced stuff that required approval, so bone records were a bootleg of a bootleg.
That sounds metal as fuck. Surprised some black metal band hasn't used that same idea as a gimmick since it's not like black metal cares about production clarity.

Reznikov Out, Budanov In As Ukraine's Defense Minister, Top Lawmaker Says

Oleksiy Reznikov said at a news conference in Kyiv on February 5 he was not planning to resign, but added that any decision about his future would be made by the president.
KYIV -- Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov is being replaced by General Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the country's military intelligence agency, according to the leader of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's faction in parliament.
David Arakhamia, the leader of the Servant of the People faction in parliament, said on Telegram on February 5 that Reznikov would be transferred to the post of minister for strategic industries to strengthen military-industrial cooperation.
"War dictates personnel policy," Arakhamia said. "Time and circumstances need to be strengthened and regrouped. This is happening now and will happen in the future."
"The enemy is preparing to attack. We are preparing to defend ourselves and return ours," he added.
Arakhamia did not specify when the changes would take place.
An official ministry statement has not yet been issued about the changes.
Arakhamia said the Interior Ministry will be headed by Ihor Klymenko, currently chief of the National Police.
Rumors of a possible Reznikov resignation or ouster have mounted after a series of accusations of corruption within the ministry.
In a news conference hours earlier, Reznikov said he was not planning to resign but added that any decision about his future would be made by the president.
"He nominates an appointee, and the [parliament] appoints. Therefore, only by the decision of the president of Ukraine will I make certain decisions, and I will do what the president of Ukraine tells me," he said.
In January, Ukrainian media reported that the Defense Ministry had allegedly purchased products for the military at inflated prices through a "gasket" company. Other charges of corruption were also alleged in the media.
The 56-year-old Reznikov denied the allegations as authorities launched an investigation.
Deputy Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov, who was responsible for supplying troops with food and equipment, resigned on January 24, citing "media accusations" of corruption that he and the ministry said were baseless.
More glowies in charge of shit, great. Might be an upgrade but by default anyone in charge of an intelligence agency isn't someone I would trust. Though he is the head of military intelligence and anyone who has been in the military knows those two words put together are an oxymoron.

I mean if this is the case, it would make 0 sense to keep funding this war, honestly
2,800+ dead NATO members wouldn't be something the Western three letter agencies couldn't keep a lid on and the phrase "mercenaries" to refer to foriegn volunteer fighters has always been a sign you're reading Russian wittern telegram drivel.

Wake up little man. You live in a globalized world now. Something happening in Fuckalistan can and will effect your life here in America.
All of oinkraine's major exports are agricultural products that could easily be produced domestically if the government wasn't purposefully paying farmers not to grow so they aren't "too competitive" with artificially monopolistic exporters like shitkraine on the global market.

It's not even like Taiwan where there's a risk of a drastic drop in the quality of something as necessary as computer chips, if Ukraine vanished off the map tomorrow everyone could still grow wheat and sunflowers.

Seems more symbolic than anything, they're going to need a whole lot more. If these assholes weren't dragging their feet, Ukrainians could've already been training on these modern Western systems for months now, to be able to use them as soon as possible. Assuming they get more than just token deliveries.

They almost certainly are being trained beforehand. It's very visible and rather politically contentious to send the system over, but not so much to teach the Ukrainians on it while they're overseas.

Remember how we first found out about HARMs when Russian radars started blowing up?

Russian Wagner mercenaries seized in Ukraine on the "lies" that lured them, and threats that kept them there

Bakhmut, Ukraine — For months, the battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut has been one of the most dangerous front lines in Russia's war on Ukraine. Vladimir Putin's forces have thrown everything from heavy artillery to savage trench warfare into trying to wear down Ukraine's resistance and take the city.

At the vanguard of the battle have been scores of men from the Kremlin-backed paramilitary Wagner Group — a force bolstered by mercenaries recruited from Russia's notorious penal colonies.

CBS News met two of these guns-for-hire, men who were seized in the east and are now being held by Ukraine's military intelligence.

Sergei was almost halfway into a 19-year sentence for murder at a penal colony when Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin visited prisons and made his pitch to convicts: Serve six months on the front line for Russia, and then you can go free.

"I needed to leave the prison one way or another," he told CBS News. "Ten years is a long time."

So, he made the deal with the devil — front line fighting in exchange for freedom, and cash.

Barely aware there was a war raging in Ukraine, Sergei was told he'd be fighting foreigners there.

"American mercenaries, Polish mercenaries, French… we were told they were Nazis," he said.

Vlad, the other Wagner man, had already served two years of his three-year sentence for assault, but the promise of early release, a record wiped clean, and a salary of $3,500 proved too tempting.

After just two weeks of training, he said he was sent up against Ukrainian tanks with nothing more than a machine gun.

"Our brothers were getting killed in huge numbers," he said. "There were mountains of bodies."

Prigozhin was recently filmed surveying some of those bodies, piled high in a makeshift morgue near the front lines. The slain fighters' final destination, however, is a special Wagner cemetery in Russia. It is already filled with freshly dug graves.

If new recruits see what they're up against and refuse to fight, Vlad said they're given no option.

"You're just killed, that's it," he said. "If you don't agree with an order, you're simply killed."

He told CBS News he had seen it first-hand.

"One of the fighters was too scared to fight," he said. "They made him dig his own grave and shot him."

Vlad claimed that he saw three comrades executed with bullets to the head, but insists he had no part in it: "There are specially trained people to do that, a security group that can do anything to you."

Both the Wagner men now believe they were conned into going to the front line.

"Everything we were told was utter lies," said Sergei. "It was not Ukrainians who wanted to kill us — we came to Ukraine to kill them."

They insisted that they didn't commit any war crimes, and both men said if they could turn back time, they'd choose the brutality of a Russian prison cell over the carnage of a Ukrainian battlefield.

We've heard so much about the terror waged by Wagner during this war, but in that cold, stark room, the Russian mercenaries showed no emotion. When we asked Vlad how he felt about everything he'd seen and experienced, his answer was chilling:

"Honestly," he said, "nothing!"

From some Turkish newspaper literally no one has ever heard of and doesn't even have a wiki entry:

I have to agree. I really hate Biden getting lauded for his actions in this war when him and his cabinet always pull the trigger late on this shit. After the success of the Kharkiv purge the US should have sent in surplus M1A1 tanks, UH-60s as well as F-16s to replace the MiG Fleet. At least pluck new Ukrainian recruits and train them so when this stuff is commited to the war effort they can be deployed as soon as they arrive. The only ones playing the game smart are the Baltics, Poland and the Czechs.

If reports of Polish casualties are to be believed I doubt they are playing it very smart. Unless your idea of smart is just ‘send all the things and let WW3 commence!’

I hope they have and just didn't tell anyone, it would've been smart. But "smart" isn't the word I'd use to describe Biden's administration, or politicians in general.
Stalling costs Ukrainian lives. By the time they decide to take this seriously and send enough equipment for Ukraine to have a winning chance, there might be no one left to use it.

Russias firm rule is going to last longer than the EUs technocratic coalition

Especially since most of the EU is shooting themselves in the foot by eschewing fossil fuels and nuclear fuel without a reliable replacement.
While I doubt either Russia or the EU are long for this world, Russia is probably going to collapse first. Russia is only being held to together by the personal charisma and power base of Putin himself. Once he leaves office, one way or another (and this will probably be sooner rather than later because, lets face it, despite all the rumors of the man's failing health, the dude is just old; he's not long for this world in any case), Russia will probably fall in on itself not long after, if not immediately.

At this point I'm almost convinced Biden is Russian controlled opposition. None of this shit would have happened under Trump. The number one rule with democrats is always projection. If they accuse you of doing something it is always something they are either currently doing, or are planning on doing.

They spent how many years screeching about Trump being a Russian agent? Remember Bidens "small incursion" gaffe? All the feds who tried to take down Trump just so happen to be getting paid by Russian oligarchs. Remember Obama being on a hot mic with Medvedev talking about giving Russia leeway? Obama no doubt has Bidens ear. Remember Trump giving Javelins to Ukraine and Zelensky came out and defended Trump when those same Russian paid feds accused him of quid pro quo? Then there's the articles like this one of Biden supposedly offering Russia 20% of Ukraine.

People might ask "but if Biden is paid Russian opposition then why is he sending weapons in Ukraine?" To that I would ask what other event recently happened that Biden was involved in which ended up with a bunch of US made weapons in the hands of our enemies? You've heard of money laundering, why not weapon laundering?

This I agree.

I think the plan was to just supply Ukraine small arms and man-portable equipment; because the assumption was (up until late February 2022) that any Russian Invasion would result in the fall/surrender/fleeing of Kiev and a subsequent guerrilla war or semi-insurgency.
In the early days, it made sense why there wasn't quicker heavier aid to Ukraine.
Almost a year into the conflict, I can't justify why they aren't sending more...

By the time they decide to take this seriously and send enough equipment for Ukraine to have a winning chance, there might be no one left to use it.
Ehhhh, this reads more like Russian propaganda.
UKROPS GONNA RUN OUT OF SOLDIERS ANY DAY NOW!!!

I'm pretty sure a major part of the US's ground strategy in Vietnam was "Muh heckin body count! Gooks gonna run out troops any day now!" and we see how that worked out.

Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), used to work in Geneva for the Soviet KGB foreign intelligence service in the 1970s.

Source: Matin Dimanche and Sonntagszeitung, citing the data of the Swiss Federal Archives, as European Pravda reports

Details: According to reports, the file on Kirill, which was compiled by the federal police at the time and later made public, confirms that the church leader belonged to the KGB.

In the early 1970s, the incumbent patriarch of the Russian Church lived in Geneva under the alias of "Mikhailov". He was to officially represent the Moscow Patriarchate in the World Council of Churches. Kirill's task was, among other things, to influence the council.

According to media reports, the goal of the Soviet leadership at the time was to force the Geneva institution to condemn the United States and its allies, and to soften their criticism of the lack of religious freedom in the Soviet Union.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church is a consistent supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his policies. He supports Russia's war against Ukraine and blesses Putin's missiles; in 2012, he called the dictator a "miracle".

Background: Dmytro Kuleba, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, is in favour of the West imposing sanctions against Russian Patriarch Kirill in 2023.

I would comment that noise of railways hater (hated the noise with his old palace), lover of palaces (so Putin gave him another while the Patriarchal Palace was under construction), watches, yachts and young monks Michailov's KGB origins are fairly well known, but this provide sourcing for this founder representative of that Commie front the 'World Council of Churches' of which Michailov was a founder representative for the RoC and USSR.

I don't think Biden is really in charge. If you ask me it's probably Obama pulling the strings and Obama isn't a stranger to weapon laundering if you remember his first Hollywood gig in a spinoff of the Fast & Furious series around 09-2010. But hey that's just a theory, a game theory!

Also holy fuck is a church gay when it's headed up by a fuckin' glowie. I think most people would honestly prefer their preacher to be a rapist or thief than a glowie.

Sounds like a good way to get Isreal to commit a few violations of Russian airspace to me. For some strange reason they get really cranky about Iranian drones.
Well we all know that the result was a bunch of Israeli drones which flew from Azerbaijan and did a bit of wrecking. Israel doesn't say, it just does regarding Iran.

If Biden controls his bladder without meds, I'm surprised. His carers are doing quite well recently, possibly.

Beijing Biden certainly wouldn't say no to Russian money, I don't doubt it for a moment. That aside, what we have is the consequence of limp-dicked policy toward Russia under Obama.
Whether they genuinely thought appeasement would've worked or just didn't want to deal the risks of a more forceful approach matters not, they fucked up and are gay for it.
Putin got away with Crimea, why wouldn't he think he could do it again?

And to be clear, when I say "Russia", I actually mean Putin and his "vertical of power". He makes these decisions, they bears the responsibility. People are powerless to change anything, they don't know how to protest effectively, and whenever they try, it ends poorly for them. The risk for the individual opposing police state is too great.
There's a reason October Revolution Day Nov 7th (anniversary of the October revolution of 1917) was memory-holed. They want people to forget that it's a thing that can happen, and forget they did.

I might be mistaken, but I thought the consensus was that Obama didn't really decided shit either, no president has for decades. Deep-state and shit.
Ehhhh, this reads more like Russian propaganda.

People are tired, man. War takes its toll, people have their limits. I'm trying to be optimistic, but they're opposing Russia, which for all its faults has a lot of resources to waste and plenty of obedient cattle to throw into the meatgrinder - Ukraine can't afford that, and with the West being indecisive, I think that time is not on their side.
When it simply comes to raw numbers, the odds were never on Ukraine's side. Putin overestimated his military and underestimated Ukraine's willingness to fight, the scary part begins now that reality check started to sink in.
Also holy fuck is a church gay when it's headed up by a fuckin' glowie. I think most people would honestly prefer their preacher to be a rapist or thief than a glowie.
It's quite clever, actually. Commies tried to purge the church, but then realized it's easier to just use it to control peasants. It's been serving that role ever since.
