Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

You know it's not even bitching about woke shit for me anymore, it's more that people making adaptations and reboots often fail to understand the original. Just look at Velma, aside from from the more political stuff what else is a huge problem? It's the constant "Now if we were in X then this would be the part where X would happen" It's trying to make it a Rick and Morty and Family Guy hybrid by copying the worst aspects of both and ingoring anything that earlier episodes more liked.

I can already predict Dale, he's going to subsribe to every modern conspiracy theory such as Qanon, election fraud, flat earth, ect, regardless of anything that was previously established about his character. Not saying that he wouldn't believe in at least one recent theory but he wouldn't instantly believe anything because other crazy people believe it. But reebot Dale would just be a checklist for the writers so they can shoehorn a halfassed joke about every theory that has ever existed while reducing Dale to a completely incompetent dysfunctional idiot with no original thoughts of his own.
I said it in the KOTH thread, but the issue with bringing KOTH back is it’s heavy ties to 90s and 00s culture. Remember, the closest the series ever got to modern day was MySpace, and even that had fans questioning if it belonged.

If they don’t age up the characters accordingly, and just plop them into modern day, it will create whiplash. But even if they fixed that issue, it still wouldn’t work for a variety of reasons.

There are massive debates about Hank’s politics. No matter what way you spin him, this will end poorly. We are no longer in Reagan American with simple politics, so every option for Hank would be wrong. He hates Clinton’s, he hates New Yorkers like Donald, but he also holds a strong stance that voting is important.

Dale is the ultimate one that will most likely be fucked up. He was a character modeled after Alex Jones, today that would be seen as unacceptable unless he is a bad guy given the go for the throat Dems are doing with him. Dale in the series is either going to get rid of his logical points in favor of wacky alien man, or they go all in on him being an evil Trumper. Just the thought of something like Covid brought up in a reboot and I am scared for how this will go down.

The whole genderbent thing really felt like enabling coomer artists tbqh
Most episodes were shipping bait plots, so it fits that the intention was cooming.

I don't know...the whole point of Bobby's character is that he's weird and doesn't fit into the mold Hank wants him to. He's chubby and limp wristed and lazy, but he's also still a likable kid that wants his dad to love him, and Hank takes interest in Bobby's weird tomfoolery on occasion.

I don't think making Bobby gay would really ruin that dynamic, as at the end of the day the point of their relationship as characters is that Bobby doesn't measure up to Hank's expectations, but he's his own man and can still make Hank proud, and Hank still loves him because he's his son.

Picturing Bobby's voice and mannerisms in a sudden gay context sounds like a nightmare yes, but it isn't far from the core of him as a character.
Bobby’s character was to show a shift in generations and parenting styles. He is a millennial, so his masculinity fits that generation more so than Hank’s boomer gen. The parenting Bobby received compared to the abusive ones of his parents lead him to being more open with his emotions. People think he is gay coded due to a few scenes of his weirdness shining, but the reality is that he is part of a gen who grew up on more feminine depictions of men being popular, such as boy bands, and he is just fitting the mold. The shows depicts that he is great with women for the most part and desires to get one. Bobby is a giga-Chad in disguise most of the time, his dad just can’t always see it due to generational customs and his own abusive childhood, but at the same time, it is those customs Hank has that save Bobby from making an ass of himself when lead by weirdos.

Considering the absolute blunder that was Toy Story 4, my curiousity is a little peaked to see where they would take woody's story for a Toy Story 5. Would they have him regret ditching his friends and family to be with Bo Peep and have him find his way back home? Or would they double down on Woody's character being head over heels for Bo and continue kissing her feet? I'm not very hopeful it would be good mind you, just that the opportunity is there to right some wrongs that the 4th movie left.
Frankly I think the only reason they haven't properly ended the toy story series is because Pixar is desperate for something that reminds people when they were a powerhouse in the industry. Forgetting that it wasn't just the ips that made pixars films great. It was the people and ides behind them. Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete docter, and all.
Their going to make Elsa a lesbian aren't they.
They didn't in frozen 2 even after the leftists demanded it and frozen 2 ended with her becoming a recluse in the woods. Really it all depends on who writes the new frozen. Will it be the original writers?
>zootopia too
Please no
We already have so many shitty sequels coming out we don't need even more disappointment
How are they gonna make another zootopia when the company's gone full blm, acab? Either Judy's gonna quit the force or it'll be a "subtle '' satire on racism and corruption in police forces.

considering how subtle the original was, i'm expecting the message to hit audiences over the head with a spade made of bricks
inb4 Judy quits her job and "rises up" against the "establishment" she used to work for due to discrimination she's barely affected by (and/or her character regresses to the beginning of the first movie and- instead of trying to just be good at her job- gets butthurt over being told she can't do it and deciding the whole place needs to burn down because of it)

Not entirely sure if this is the place for this, but I just beat SpongeBob The Cosmic Shake. While I still have some challenges to complete, I think I have seen most of the game to properly speak on it.

First off, this game is not a BFBB sequel. I may be marketed like it is BFBB2, but it is very different. At best, it feels more akin to the Movie game, being a much more linear experience with collectibles being found off the beaten path. The game also holds elements of Kreature From The Krusty Krab, being very mini game oriented at times. SpongeBob’s movement is similar to rehydrated besides some key differences. For starters, he is much faster, which, thank God as Rehydrated dragged. He also lost the upward attack from BFBB, but retained everything else. Added to the move kit though is a great kick move that can launch SpongeBob at objects.

Going into levels, I would rank them as so, starting with worst:
  • Prehistoric Kelp Forest - The level ended way too quick and felt like it barely utilized the prehistoric SpongeBob setting. Boss fight against Pom Pom (Prehistoric Pearl) was especially annoying as attack patterns were hard to dodge and enemies flooded the stage.
  • Medieval Sulfur Fields - It is alright. Platforming is in the castle was fun as it was huge bunk beds in water. Issues with this level include an annoying cake serving mini game that has you move around a barrage of enemies and a witch shooting projectiles, though you can kill off the enemies between each cake delivery. I also experienced a game breaking glitch where my path up the blue tower was locked off, had to reset to fix that.
  • Wild West JellyFish Fields - It is a tutorial level that gets one accustomed to riding Mystery. Level design is fun, but again, tutorial. Also, they have a section where you face an Alaskan Bullworm, but it doesn’t appear. I was really confused when playing as collecting the item seemed too easy.
  • Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom - Another starter level, so not much here. The movie motif was cool, so was the Karate Island reference. I remember the Sandy boss being difficult, but that is because the game doesn’t communicate that only kicks work on her.
  • Halloween Rock Bottom - Great theming goes a long way. Having a Trick-or-Treat mission in a Halloween inspired Rock Bottom was fun. The puzzles were also great, and the boss was okay. Playing Metal Gear with a giant, sugar high, Gary was as fun as you’d think.
  • Pirate Goo Lagoon - Real shit. Loved this level as the beach theme is fully utilized and working with the Dutchman was a great idea. Having to save Larry and the Anchovies from returning BFBB villain Prawn, was a fun concept and I cannot think of any downsides.
  • Jelly Glove World - I love a good horror theme, and this brought me back to the haunting feeling of Chum World in Revenge of The Flying Dutchman. This world takes away Patrick as a companion, so SpongeBob is alone in this Epic Mikey styled theme park full of pics of Glovey Glove replacing SpongeBob as Patrick’s best friend and him taunting you about it. Great level to end on and best boss of the game.

Other things to note:
  • The writing in the game is great. Having Patrick accompany SpongeBob throughout the adventure was a great touch as the two’s interactions made levels fun. SpongeBob’s innocence is brought up to 11 in this title, but never gets annoying. He is continuously charming in how he cares for his friends in a way previous games never communicated.
  • Boss battles suck, most are just wave of enemies with one central enemy with annoying attacks. These are made worse by the unnecessary Awards for 100% completion. The final boss was painfully easy and only had one wave unlike SpongeBot from BFBB.
  • Costumes are great, and hold great references to the series.
  • Collectibles are whatever? Game has tons of optional backtracking to up replay value. Gold Spatulas are also part of the game, but do nothing besides unlock an award saying you found them all. There is no place to see which level you left one in either. Honestly, just skip awards and find collectibles after the game ends and all powers are unlocked.

Velma’s first season ended. The killer was Fred’s mom because she wanted to put a popular girl’s brain into Fred because “Fred dumb and woman in male patriarchal society” crap. Died horrible, popular girls killed were recovered, new killer, and Velma accidentally said Norville’s name instead of Daphne’s when declaring her love.

It was all very stupid and very bad, obviously.

You know, the more I take a critical look at shows like Velma and the cartoon community as it is now, the more I understand why our parents and teachers told us to grow up in our youth.

People absolutely need to grow up.

They would never do anything that nice for me. :(

How do you accidentally say the wrong name? Did she get interrupted or something?

Cheap romance drama, because they’ve made all the other characters in love with Velma. So they make it look like Velma and Daphne are finally getting together, so they kiss and:

Just bait for another season.

I refuse to see this show, but given the lack of mention of scoobie do, I am assuming the theories of him being Gigi, or some other human, due to a brain swap were wrong?

It’s still very disgusting the whole murder mystery was just a excuse to bitch about “the patriarchy” and give Fred the middle finger for being white.

I don’t know why everyone was complaining about a lack of scoobie do. That dog dodged a bullet.

So let's derail, again.

I mentioned a few days ago, I was babysitting my niece and showed her a bunch of these shows from the 1980s and it made me realize that despite being for little girls, a lot of them go incredibly dark places. Like one of the ones we watched--this thing called Rose Petal Place--has the villain slip a voice-sapping drug to the heroine, then shove her in a dark room. The heroine says she'll die in there... to which the villain basically says "sucks to be you" and closes the door.

Me and my niece were both like "What. the. fuck."

..... Aaaanyway though:

I've been curious for awhile what Kiwis think of girl-oriented cartoons? Like I know My Little Pony has an autistic fanbase, but aside from that, what do you think of the show itself?

What do you guys think about the classics like Rainbow Brite, Jem and the Holograms, Strawberry Shortcake, or any others you might've seen?

For the first couple of seasons, Friendship is Magic was....actually pretty decent. Not a secret masterpiece like said autistic fanbase claims, but an actually good cartoon that people of all ages could enjoy. It peaked with the Canterlot Wedding, IMO. Season 3 is when they started to pay attention to said autistic fanbase, and the quality subsequently dipped. Funny that.

I feel similar, except I thought even the second season showed signs that the show was losing its mind.

EDIT: Fuck, I hate trackpads... accidentally clicked "send" before I was done. Typing more.

But anyway.... like right at the very beginning the season had them fighting an all-powerful chaos god. Like, what the fuck. This would be like if you were reading Archie Comics and then issue #27 had Archie and the Riverdale kids having to defeat Darkseid. Its a total mismatch and nothing in the series really prepares you for this (which also means you know the resolution is gonna be bullshit).

And then from there, I just had the feeling that the show favored creating memes over good writing. So much in season two didn't make sense. I do recall actually liking the Canterlot Wedding thing but....

Yeah, by season three the show wasn't even worth it. For me the worst was that stupid fuck anti-bullying episode that confused its own message.

Yes, this.

Pandering to your manchild/womanchild audience instead of the children your cartoon is actually aimed at will always cause the show's quality to dip. ALWAYS.
Lauren Faust left the show after the conclusion of the first season.
And losing the person who understands that the most didn't help either.
