Unpopular Opinions About Western Animation

I can't get into Rick and Morty, cause the art style weirds me out and Rick's voice annoys me

Although I enjoy Steven Universe, its humor sometimes relies too much on self-awareness - a cheesy pun does not become a good joke when a character points out that it's bad.

Moral Orel is very underrated.

Pixar's Up would've been a lot better if it stripped away its more child-friendly elements.

I've never been a fan of the idea that children's shows/movies need lots of hidden sexual humor to appeal to periphery demographics - it feels like a forced effort to be "subversive" most of the time, and older audiences will come anyway if the concept and story are solid

Venture Bros is way better than Rick and Morty and the sperg in me resents the fact that the latter is way more popular than the fomer.

The Legend of Korra finale was horrid. And if it wasn't pandering, then I'll eat my hat.

Archer
is great and all, but I like Frisky Dingo more. Another underrated gem.

Pre cancellation Family Guy was pretty funny. Not groundbreaking but still quite amusing.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
is good but not amazing.

This kinda relates to the Farms but I don't think Steven Universe is as SJW friendly as some members make it out to be. Yeah, there is some gay in it but it doesn't come off as super pandering, at least to me. Most of the SJWness is the fandom projecting their wishes onto the show (Like "Lars is totally trans u guise!"). Anyway, I think it's a fun and creative show. Not a masterpiece but it's good to watch when there isn't anything else on.

Isn't Steven a white straight male?

Yeah but the fanbase tried to claim that he's "nonbinary" because he wore a dress in one epiosde.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

Because social justice. They're fighting for causes they don't understand and don't want to understand because they see the world in black & white, when in reality, it's more of a gray area.

Getting back on topic...

Tiny Toon Adventures could benefit from a revival.

And yet they flipped their shit when Uncle Grandpa dressed up as Rose Quartz.

I guess it's transmisogyny if the guy in a dress is ugly, but if he's cute/hot, he's totally a trans girl/nonbinary!

*sigh* Autism drives me to say these things...

Save for the movie specials, I really disliked Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends - one too many annoying / unlikable characters for my liking, overall. Not as bad as most of CN's output back then, though - anyone remember My Gym Partner's a Monkey? No? Eh... Who cares.

Uncle Grandpa and Clarence are two of the most underrated shows CN has produced in the current era. Seeing one get cancelled (UG) and seeing the other get so easily bashed angers me quite a lot, honestly. Unlike Steven Universe (as well as Adventure Time and Regular Show, all of which I don't find all that funny to begin with), I have LEGITIMATELY LAUGHED at (and overall, enjoyed!) BOTH shows. And I'm well aware I ain't the target demo, either.

Adventure Time and Regular Show - Whenever either show tries to be funny, it falls flat, or worse, sucks ass, honestly... I think both know this, because they've tried to become more serious and dramatic, but with mixed - bag results...

Amazing World of Gumball (especially the later seasons) - Truly the hardest and most I ever laughed and legitimately had fun with when it comes to current gen CN, next to Clarence (whom while I do enjoy, this show outdoes easily, honestly.).

Steven Universe only makes me cringe whenever it tries to be funny - this show only works for me when it has action or dramatic moments. Otherwise, it's the most overrated and overprotected show CN has ever put out. Anyone who says it's the best thing ever needs a good ass-kicking as well. And that's FACT.

Penn Zero: Part Time Hero - easily an underrated and overlooked gem, in my opinion - I hate seeing that it's been quietly cancelled. It actually felt like a real cartoon to me and I enjoyed it far more than Star Vs. The Forces of Evil.

Wander Over Yonder is in a similar boat for me - which I watch mostly because Lord Hater and Commander Peepers are fucking hilarious to me.
Wander, however? Just an annoying do - gooder and part of the reason I find this shit easy to bash. Don't get me started on what a fucking Mary Sue (villain Sue) Lord Dominator is in Season 2... I'm more than confident people only watch this show because of this Mary Sue, too - which makes this show look even shittier and increasingly unmemorable as a result, almost like in Foster's case. Damn shame, I like this show way more than that, too.

Gravity Falls - this show didn't truly become anything noteworthy for me until Season 2, where the show stopped with the toxic Dipper / Wendy crap that was making the show damn near unwatchable, save for some good episodes without it getting in the way.

Star Vs. The Forces of Evil - Yeah. Just more kid goes to high school, Sailor - Moon - esque BS, in my honest opinion. It looks good and all - but looking good ain't enough for me.
However, this quote really sums up my autism toward this BS.:
Let's start with the main character. Star Butterfly doesn't come off as likeable to me. She is just this obnoxious teenage girl who was only sent to Earth because her parents didn't think she was responsible. Her character is like your typical Disney Channel sitcom character with someSailor Moonslapped onto her. Wander and Mabel Pines were a bit obnoxious as well, only those characters were actually funny and had depth to them. Star, well... doesn't have either of those qualities.

Other characters don't fare too well, either - Marco is usually a prick who only keeps Star around because of the school's foreign exchange program, and Ludo is just your stereotypical maniacal villain hellbent on getting rid of Star, except his motivation is never mentioned or even hinted at.

And as for the episode plots, they're pretty uninspired as well - take away all the villain skirmishes and magic, and you would have a typical run-of-the-mill teen sitcom.

Bottom line:There are a lot of elements of this show that have been done better by other shows. Honestly, it is one of the most overrated shows I have ever watched, and I don't quite understand why it gets the praise it has been getting.

*sigh* Good old autism never lets me down on kid's crap like this...

Finally, count me in as someone else who really fucking hates Ren & Stimpy (but can agree with what John K. wanted to do for the industry, even if he was a hack, unfortunately...).

I think Penn Zero is still running. The animation is beautiful and Molina's voice acting is perfect.

South Park is good but I think it tries too hard sometimes.

Clarence is relaxing. It's nice to find a show that's just about being a kid.

Futurama was gold.

Other than anime, I don't really watch cartoons as much as I used to.

As someone who never saw the show, a lot of the Clarence bashing confuses me, since it just seems like a harmless, normal show. I'd get it (but not agree necessarily) if it's in reaction to the Skyler Page ordeal and other people are on their high horse about it, but afaik he had surprisingly little to do with Clarence anyway aside from the concept and voice acting, so what gives? *sigh*

Agree with all of this. Although Ren & Stimpy is annoying as shit, I'm still a bit sad that the only real effect its animation seemed to have on cartoons was "look how funny gross-out gags are lol"

Animaniacs was a million times better than Tiny Toon Adventures.

I only liked about half of the original "Nicktoons." CatDog, Rocket Power, Aaah! Real Monsters, and to a lesser extent Rocko's Modern Life never really appealed to me all that much (though of those four, Rocko was the one I found the most watchable). I also don't really understand the appeal of Rugrats. I guess that most of the older fans nowadays like it because "muh nostalgia," but the only thing it really has going for it is that sometimes it can be funny to imagine the episodes from the adults' perspective.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was good, but is given waaaaaay too much credit. People act like it's the holy grail of kids' animation. It's not. I haven't seen The Legend of Korra so I can't speak about that.

The Simpsons was still watchable by about 2005. A lot of people say that quality dropped in the late 90's, but I've watched and genuinely enjoyed a lot of episodes from after that time period. In my opinion, quality started to drop around the time of the movie (though I liked the movie).

The memes killed all of Futurama for me.

Nobody knows how to apply them correctly.
To be frank, most people don't know how memes in general work.

The Legend of Korra finale was horrid. And if it wasn't pandering, then I'll eat my hat.
Honestly, I thought the lesbian pandering was the least of the finale's problems. No I save my ire for how anti-climatic Kuvira's sudden side switch was. Honestly at that point, she either could have been fully killed off or at least kept some of her evil tendencies after turning good. But no it's like "You must see the error of your ways." "ZOMG, I see the errors of my ways, I am no longer evil".

That's an unpopular opinion?

Foster's was kind of a mess looking back and I'm not surprised people are starting to forget about it.

But that kickass rickroll they did though! (:_(

Nah but seriously, I kind of understand why that's happening. As much as I love FHFIF, it was probably so popular for so long since it was head and shoulders above a lot of cartoons that were airing at the time. If it premiered now most likely nobody would give a fuck about it, that or SJWs would whine about how mean they think it is.

Honestly, I can see why people see the show as “mean”. The designs of the characters, as kooky and trippy as they are (Craig McCracken is an awesome artist), are pretty edutainment show-ish. So the writers probably amped up the abrasiveness for irony (a la South Park) but even I have to say they really overdid towards the end.

Still love it anyways. FHFIF is the very definition of a diamond in the rough.

Pixar's Up would've been a lot better if it stripped away its more child-friendly elements.

Yeah it's not a good sign if a movie peaks in its the first ten minutes (read: the one thing anyone remembers from it). Up would've been an awesome short though.

Anyways.

* Toy Story 1 is still Pixar's best movie.

* I prefer Cow and Chicken to Ren and Stimpy by a small margin. The Red Guy is hysterical and that's what cinches it for me.

* People think Foster's Home is mean-spirited? Compared to CatDog, FHFIF is practically Care Bears. Normally I don't whine about that stuff but holy shit CatDog was a rough one to sit through, even as a kid.

* Danny Phantom was just okay. Maybe there's something I'm missing regarding its appeal. Also why is he so many people's first cartoon crush?!

* Jimmy Neutron's movie was just meh, and its first season was pretty shit, but the two seasons following it were great. Its fandom is up there with Invader Zim in terms of nuttiness though. People legit write essays about this show. Also the Power Hours were really funny.

* If Helga Pataki's behavior is even slightly romanticized in the new Hey Arnold! reboot , then I'm noping the hell out. Yes, the show did a great job of explaining how she became the way she is -- it's a whole 'nother thing to excuse and/or romanticize her actions.

* Phineas and Ferb was cute enough but towards the end it got . . . I dunno, really pretentious? Like it got this tone of "wow that's a bad pun. hahaha look how we clever we are for pointing it out"

Tumblr and the shitty fanbase aside?
I actually enjoy Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe for what they are. (Although I hated AT for the first season or so because -in my mind- it had replaced Chowder and Flapjack which were my "post-shitty college workday laugh at stupid humor, puns, and pacing" zoneout.) That's probably the least popular opinion I've got. Something about lighthearted shit getting dark and weird unexpectedly appeals to me. For example the big reveal that Ooo is a post-post-apocalyptic wasteland? I fucking loved it.

Kinda embarrassed to admit it, but I also still watch Spongebob and honestly I'm just glad it still has its moments, you know?
