I think he's always been the exact kind of person he says to never be. He is a societal chameleon, changing his behavior and viewpoints based on whatever he thinks will benefit him. He aims far too high but because it's all an act he can't back it up. So of course he doesn't know anything about communism because he never felt the need to look it up, he's used to people taking his word at the surface level and not digging deeper. When someone actually sinks their teeth in and gets him in an area he can't dance around and dodge he falls apart fast.

People like that spend longer studying the behaviors of others than they do on self reflection because they believe they can manipulate other people into avoiding the weaknesses that come with having a societal chameleon personality. The truth is there's a lot and sweet talking doesn't cover them. JP will never be able to overcome his own ego to fix the core issues, he'll only get worse with time.

Slight powerlevel, but I'm in the same boat. Most of what I've learned and what I've enjoyed came, and has come from the internet.

But people like us are the exception that proves the rule right. We used the Internet like the people who originally envisioned a bright future for humanity wanted us to. It's not like we're special or anything, we're just trying like plenty of artists, musicians, you name it. We're not high IQ gigachad unicorns, we're all average people just trying their best. But we're also not too significant a portion of the userbase.

Meanwhile:

  • The average basement dweller uses it to coom, post shit takes on the internet for updoots, and spend the rest of his day getting dopamine hits from shit entertainment like a crack addict with a digital pipe.
  • The average boomer-xoomer schmuck who works a regular job uses it on the job, then goes home, watches absolutely inane, cable TV tier shit on YouTube and Netflix, reads cable TV tier news and content aggregator websites, posts whatever the fuck to Instagram, compares themselves to the people on that app, goes to bed to slave again the day after.
  • That's not even going into how fucked teens are. Just TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and shitty Chinese games all day. Try talking to a random zoomer in meatspace. They'll look and sound terminally online, and will play the part too.
Were average people dumb back then, did they follow stupid trends, etc.? Absolutely. But at least they behave like people as opposed to behaving like dysfunctional robots the moment you try and wrestle them off the computer/phone, and into meatspace. At least you could get together with your mates back then to listen to some music without someone either actually trooning out, or trying to argue a political point like Fatrick does then shunning you once you tell them to stfu about it. Later on, you all went to the lan house in order to play some CS 1.6. People used AOL, MSN, etc. sparingly, and more to arrange meatspace gatherings rather than as a substitute for fresh air and green grass. Good fucking times, albeit obviously flawed.

Joe Rogan poses as a critic, but at most he offers approved, licensed safe semi dissidence. The Matt Walsh interview, that he's pushed so hard on Spotify says as much. Jordan Peterson can ramble at will with his syncretic mystic bs, and for anyone like Peter Zeihan with broad brushed geopolitical stuff, there no effort to challenge. Any slightly fashy music is always blocked, even stuff like John Edmonds singing about Rhodesia, South Africa. YouTube are less censorious than Spotify.

People who advocate for de-anonymization of the internet deserve [REDACTED] and every ounce of vitriol they receive.

Double for people who are doing it because people are saying mean things on the internet about them.

And that goes octuple for anyone who does the above while claiming they give a single iota of a fuck about freedom of speech.

De-anonymization might have prevented some of how society got to where it is. Or maybe it wouldn’t. We can’t re-do the dawn of the internet.

As much as we use anonymity to mitigate ideological persecution or whatever, it also makes us dismissible as trolls or bots. Real name oversharers who feel emboldened by the correctness of their positions end up making consumerist, corporatist mindset topically verifiable as the societal consensus.

I think it might be too late for de-anonymity to help anything, sure. The machinery is in place to cancel people.

But who knows if we could’ve held all of this off by saying our pieces and accepting criticism earlier

Going to try and be polite even though I think this is a horrifically bad take.

The psychology of being anonymous is what removes self-censorship from the equation. If you take societal and physical consequences out of the equation, people are capable of being completely honest with one another. Even if you have your name and face attached, and think you don't care, you do. And that will lead to an inability for the free exchange of ideas to take place as it has thus far in the history of the internet not just due to external forces but internal ones.

Imagine if you will what the world would look like right now if the internet was somehow completely de-anonymized right before the covid lockdowns. Yeah. I don't want to live in that world either.

As for the dismissal issue, we know and they know, and they know we know they know, that most anons aren't bots. Societal consensus cracking and the establishment of multiple instances of a false consensus would happen either way anyhow, the establishment has done that since before the internet existed.
