No, you're not reading too much into this. The typical response when falsely accused is flat out denial, along with anger or righteous indignation. Something along the lines of, "I didn't do that. And you're an asshole for even thinking I would do some fucked-up shit like that." Not, "Oh, well. They have no proof I did that." Chantal is obviously lying. Again.
