When I took the ASVAB around a decade ago I saw several people having to get help at the recruiter's office because they couldn't pass the minimum score for the army. I believe the minimum score required for joining the army at that time sat around 30. I hadn't been in a school in ages and I got a 91 on the short form, can't remember the long form. It is legitimately easy unless you are a legitimate retard but I talked to half a dozen people while signing up that studied for the thing, it was baffling. The only thing that tripped me up were the mechanic related questions and a few of the math ones.

Yeah I don't want to make it sound like the average person I worked with in the military was brilliant. I ran into some frighteningly stupid people. But years later, working as a TA in an engineering program, at a decent university, I ran into just as many stupid people.

If you gave me the any fresh from the military vet, regardless of the branch and the specific job they had, I could get them into a university or college. I'm not saying it would be a good school/program or that they will graduate, but I could get them in. No question.

If you you gave me a random college student and told me to get them enlisted, I would estimate it would be a less than 10% chance to succeed. There are just fewer slots open and the restrictions are higher. Obviously not just intelligence.
