Caves of Qud

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
They keep on raising the price for whatever reason. All prices shown are in USD.
From 14.88$ (lol) with a 10% discount to 13.39$ as seen in sseth's video for the GOG version.
To 19.99$ with a 10% discount (GOG winter sale) to 17.99$ as seen by 2022-12-14.

For the added price they seem keen on removing metagamy things.
They patched out freeze-drying lava.
You can no longer dominate pursuers and become them as damage to yourself pulls you out of domination (though I wonder if it was an option at all).
The sandbox can be exploited in plenty of ways so patching this seems to be out of some sort of Sseth PTSD.

The fun interactions between game systems is what makes the game fun what de fuck

Edit oh shit I realized I basically just said the same thing at the start of the year lmao

GODDAMMIT

I wrote a review of Caves of Qud on Steam. I gave it a negative but I wasn't totally harsh about it or anything. I more wanted to inform potential buyers looking at the reviews that there is a far superior game out there that's free called Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.

I remember @CatParty posting a thread one time where the Dev was crying about people negrating his game and bringing the review down slightly, despite the fact that it still has an overwhelmingly positive ranking. Well, this little overly sensitive baby went on Twitter to cry about my one little review that wasn't even all that negative.

This fatso is actively monitoring the reviews so he can cry about any negrates. I mean, there's petty and then there's PETTY. This fat, neckbearded doofus is definitely the latter.

This is how I found out about it btw, since I don't have a twitter account:
The reason why my playtime is so substantial is because I'm a sleepy person sometimes and my computer chair is very fancy. I find myself falling asleep in it often. And with a boring, abysmal experience like CoQ, I found myself falling asleep even more than usual. A more accurate playtime would be if you divided that time by four, and subtracted three to five hours.
At least half the play time I have on games on steam is from me either 1: getting too drunk to close the game before going to bed or 2: sneaking in a bit of play before work and forgetting to exit the game.

Okay, so I have played the game myself, and I like it.

The systems are neat.

I do wish there were more random thingies to find, though, like in Nethack. There are ten-or-twelve tonics with randomized appearances, sure, but Nethack has at least twenty!

Also the game is very hard, and I imagine part of the dev's stress about the game is that it's a bit too hard to get meaningfully-deep into it, so I imagine the dev isn't very eager to playtest bugs or exploits or balance issues. (Some devs never play their games! I've seen it before. Others make them just to have something to mess around with while they have spare time with their friends, only for the people who buy the game to completely obsess over it, like with Dominions 5: Warriors of the Faith.)

I am tempted to ask the devs why they even bother with having the Putus Templar in the game, if so much of the discord rules are dedicated to never talking about it.

Split personalities but Fabulous

I would make that text rainbow but idk how.
You could always take the hard route by individually color coding each letter, to bask in the fabulous result of your toil.
Or you could do the easy thing like the devs should and 41% yourself. Attendant pre-sudoku dick-chopping not necessary, but encouraged for others to laugh at.

I've been playing the game for a while. Early on to mid-game, I'd say it's a game of rocket tag and the combat has little in the way of not punishing one or two mistakes with death. As you can only save in villages, you can't really get immersed in exploration. The looming idea that 30-60 minutes of gameplay can be destroyed due to running into grenade-launching goats is omnipresent and doesn't feel nice. I don't know why you can't set checkpoints anywhere else in the base game, but this mod helps with that feeling. It's not hard, just very punishing to new players.
Also, non-mutants who use cybernetics have a boring and slow start when compared to espers and chimeras. Putus feel like an afterthought in comparison to mutants. Also, zetachrome items have had their rarity lowered throughout development.

Oh, I'm a NOVICE who plays Classic mode (no checkpoints) and has only found out What's Eating the Watervine(?) once.

The amount of dice rolls in this game has screwed me over in ways D&D (or even Nethack) could only dream of.

Someone compromised the Discord, showing everybody the #identity-roles channel and @everyone-ing "raped by @cipek" in the #code-of-conduct channel (and even renaming the channel to that).

Here's a list of pronouns:

There are roughly 40% fewer she/her's than Tumblr-users on the server, and that includes MtF's.

I don't know what percent of this group is serious or not, but 88 is far more than I thought there'd be.

Dead Internet Theory may very well be true, given that only 70 people on a server with well over 1200 members & applicants have responded to an @everyone.

That's a lot of attention being put into your echo chamber.
Just imagine how much better Qud could be if the devs put more effort into honing the game itself and less into being useless Discord faggots.

The Discord-runner, @onessie, has quit.

Whether this was the main dev or someone else is uncertain, but this is most-likely from the Discord's trolling.

EDIT: I am told that it was a bot named Ereshkigal, and that I am dumb.

I am sorry for the necropost, but this is the only Caves of Qud thread we have here at the moment and I do not feel like starting another one.

Supposedly, there is going to be an official full release soon, Caves of Qud 1.0, although it has been set back a little bit as the whole Unity engine fiasco has caused some issues, but that is apparently a minor stumbling block.

There are two main issues I have with the game, with the first one being that there is no point in playing the game at this point in development as there is an 80% chance that your savefile is going to be broken with each weekly update.

Secondly, I wish that somebody would update some of the tileset mods that exist for the latest version of Caves of Qud as the dark backgrounds cause eyestrain after awhile.

As an aside, 90% of the Discord jannies on the Caves of Qud channel are troons, and 60% of its members seem to be as well. Yet, joining the Discord channel is the only way you can get a good idea of what the latest game updates are, so I have to hold my nose from the smell of stinkditches as I head to their game announcements page.

Here are some tips to enjoy this game. First, use these mods by pressing "+ Subscribe to all" at the top. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3049187535 Change individual mods as you see fit.

Weekly updates only break savegames about 1-3 times per year, and those updates are big. There's a mod in that modpack that lets you export a character from one savegame and use it in a new world to mitigate that issue to an extent.

If there's a thing you don't like, mitigate it yourself. Think the game needs to let you save more often than only at settlements in rp mode? Check the workshop to see if- oh wait there's already a mod in that modpack that lets you save at campfires, which you can make almost anywhere. For every problem this game has, modders have typically come up with a solution, and that includes a lack of content/the hundred different systems that aren't very fleshed out.

Learn from each death and the game becomes easy.

For everything else use the wiki and, if necessary, wishes/console commands to fix broken shit or just play how you want to play. https://wiki.cavesofqud.com/wiki/Wishes
