If you unfriend everyone who likes something problematic (and you have to, you can’t just say “wizard game bad but everything else okay”), then you will end up with no friends. That being said, that may not be a problem for this person.

As a continental europoor, I always wondered what the drive for bongs and burgers is to self-censor. These guys - at least that is my impression - always had a stronger tradition in regards to free speech than any continental Europe shithole. It's not like a Stasi-type government security agency with totalitarian hold on power is breathing down their necks or are they just afraid sperging shitlibs could discover their wrongthink?

The quick & easy answer is they (incorrectly) believe this prevents the censored term(s) from "trending" and reduce their searchability. They're wrong, because search engines tend to be smarter than that (and they usually use the traditional wildcard/catch-all globbing character ("*") for their censorship anyway, lol) but they keep doing it anyway. It's an empty act of defiance to many, but also a virtue signal as well (to the damaged people who care about this shit, self-censorship is a membership badge).

There's more to it though. This group in particular is very stupid. They're so stupid they actually believe in the childish ideas like those portrayed in the HP series ("He Who Shall Not Be Named"), the Candyman film series and Beetlejuice ("say his name three times to summon him"), the Fire Emblem games ("Those Who Slither in the Dark") and so on. They truly do believe that words can have actual, genuine other-worldly powers (and the more clever among them have correctly observed that mutating language can eventually shift the cultural zeitgeist), and so they genuinely believe uttering those censored terms has real-world risk -- merely uttering Rowling's name invokes some unseen evil and draws it towards them.

Like I said, they're fucking stupid. They think they're the opposite sex, after all, so we're automatically talking about people playing with a few cards short of a full deck to begin with. What really cracks me up is the fact that most of them picked up this stupid idea from the HP series they hate now and also the fact that in the faiths/practices where uttering literal "power words" carried significant risk, doing so while merely "censoring" them is every bit as bad/dangerous -- you don't do it on pain of invoking their power accidentally. You only referred to them indirectly ("He Who Shall Not Be Named", etc.). Even modern lame-ass wiccans get that right.

Admittedly, I never thought something as simple as a video game would result in a mass peaking, but, ultimately, the Troon did this to themselves.

So let's get this straight. In order to save trans people from genocide they're going to try to put a dent into book sales of the most sold book series of all time. They're going to put a dent in revenue earned by one of the largest movie series of all time. They're going to try and get the masses to stop buying professional merchandise of said popular series. And on top of all that they don't want families going to one of the most popular theme parks in the world.

It's the best illustration so far of how (justifiably) over-confident they've become over the past decade. They've long been convinced that they can just scream and yell and stamp their feet to make people uncomfortable to get their way, and the last decade has reinforced that belief since people do tend to cave for the most part and Big Troon has indeed made absurd inroads and gained political power it never should have.

They act like this because until now, it's pretty much always worked. But this breeds hubris which leads to overconfidence and arrogance, and that's when we get our finest harvests. HP was a "finished" franchise after the last of the movies was released, and the teeming masses moved on to other fantasies (fucking capeshit comes to mind). But people remember HP fondly, and this big AAA game -- giving HP fans the exact fantasy they've always wanted -- brought the franchise back into the public eye and rekindled all that excitement.

Troons have the same flaw most narcissists do. Once they've got a good shtick going, they cannot read the fucking room anymore. It's a well-established fact that you can't really put a dent of any kind into Current Thing™ once it's gained momentum. Attempts to do so are doomed to fail, and people who can't pivot away from those efforts fast enough invariably sink their careers.

They're essentially doing the same thing the religious types and the Tipper Gores and Jack Thompsons of the world were doing against "naughty" music and video games in the 90's, to about the same effect. Peopled hate them for it. Only this time absolutely nobody actually agrees with the troons. At least in the 90's it wasn't an impossible sell to convince parents that Doom and Mortal Kombat could be having negative effects on their kids, or that a musical work called "Cop Killer" could be sending the wrong message. This time the most annoying people imaginable are crying the same things about one of the most popular and adored franchises of all time. People fucking loathe them for it.

It's happened a few times in recent years where I live, and it's fucking funny every single time. Its a perfect example (as if one were needed) of the absolutely insane malignant narcississm of the Troon. The society rhat has coddled and kow-towed to them for so long shares a big part of the blame in this, the Troon has learned that if it whines loudly, people give them their way, so it has reinforced this behavior, but being malignant narcissists, Troons have taken this as proof of their hallowed status and have not made the connection that its simply because people don't want to have to deal with the tantrum.
