Sketch comedy is typically hit or miss. I liked Whitest Kids U Know and I couldn't stand the Zack sketches half the time, the Sam and Trevor ones were usually the best. I watched MADtv growing up and 2/3's of those were terrible due to 2nd City alumni failing to progress and wrote terrible sketches for that.

For the first season of a sketch comedy show, it did pretty good for itself and would've likely evolved as it got another season.

It did pretty good for a new Sketch comedy show and you're making a lot of assumptions that Eric Andre's audience shared overlap with an unknown Sketch Comedy group full of white guys from New England. Squidbullies is an established show, it has an audience and the fact that MDE was ahead of it is a good sign of success.

Compare all this with shitty live action series they were giving comedians like Gellman, Oswald, and whoever at the time. Even with established comedians those did shitty ratings. Sam, Nick, and Charls were unknown assholes and they did really good.
