Are you ready for SRECon23? If so, then you better buckle up, kiddos! Elliot and his morbidly obese colleague in Jeffrey are going to waste your time with another pointless presentation on a product suite you probably don't need anyway. If I had to get lectured by a pair of disfigured eunuchs pretending to be women, I'd most likely kill myself in the middle of their presentation. | Original

Service maps aren't useful at all, he's right about that. There's nothing compelling or useful about their implementation either, only that it took them 3-4 years longer for them to build it after watching their competitors deliver it before them. Elliot, either post receipts / heatmaps and testimonials about it being used outside of the sales pitch or stfu with the marketing drivel.

Honeycomb uses open source on the client side of the observability stack, this is called Open Telemetry. This consortium was formed a few years ago because historically, APM and monitoring vendors would build these SDKs and libraries themselves and instruct their customers to install them. Eventually, some vendors figured out how to "auto-instrument" certain languages and frameworks because of the byte loaders that allowed runtime monkey patching (not all languages expose this capability, Java is one that does -- statically compiled languages like Rust or Go aren't as "accessible"). At first, OTel was a mess, incomplete implementations, buggy updates, literally causing apps to crash (this happens with commercial tools too, but with less frequency). The ecosystem has improved since and there are now OSS tools that do the auto instrumentation too!

In any case, the rise of Open Source server side tools to process telemetry produced by applications have gained popularity and market share. Grafana, Kibana, Jaeger, etc have all been around for a while, but there wasn't a common "framework" to emit the data these tools need to collect to be useful (OTel enters the room). Elliot is referring to the costs of running those server side tools at scale. ELK is notoriously difficult to run at scale, and if you want to handle the gobs of telemetry that modern apps produce in production, you'll need something like Kafka to handle processing and a massively distributed database to handle storage. Those are really difficult to own/manage, and that's precisely why smaller orgs (less than thousands) will often just pay vendors like Splunk or Datadog to handle it for them.

It's very minor, but goddamn does it get old seeing that one Karl Popper quote keep popping up, because you know they all saw it on one reddit comic and have no contextual understanding of it.

In the online space, these days, who are the ones denouncing all arguments, who forbids their followers to listen to arguments, and who believes violence is justified against their enemies?
The problem is that we are in a totally different platform. This is in context towards a platform where everyone has the right to speech INSIDE IT, but this doesn't apply to people who are in different platforms. In what way are we being intolerant towards them? Making fun of them from a different platform (website)? We are not curbing their speech; Our messages or "speech" never notifies them. It's like another country where our messages basically have zero effect on them, but this country does not even exist; it's a fucking website. You can actually live your whole life without ever having to know about this website; there are hundreds of websites like this. Each with a different platform.

Btw if anyone's curious what the fuck Lips is, I took a dive so you don't have to. It's just a poorly designed instagram clone with a really hard to use media feed (you can't click into posts or anyone's profile without losing your place in the feed), filled with softcore porn of ugly girls, troons, gays, fat girls, terrible drawings etc. The result is entirely what you might expect...
Holy shit, it's like Twitter had a threesome with Tumblr and DeviantArt! What an utter nightmare, and definitely something that should be thread-worthy.

Had Vordy quit while he was ahead, we might have been a distant memory.
When new to the Farms, I looked up the threads on Vordrak because I kept seeing his name whenever batshit crazy people came up as a topic of conversation. Crazy as Vordrak seems to be the measure around here for malicious insanity. Dude genuinely creeps me out, the kind of malignant lunatic you'd clock IRL coming your way on the street and go wide around.

Early in the Troon War, there was conjecture Vordrak was collaborating with Fong-Jones. If true, I can only imagine what such Zoom call conversations must've been like between those two, Elliot Fong-Jones with his painted-on woman face complete with dead black eyes and ghastly yellow teeth, Vordrak trying hard to pass for normal but looking like he just buried another corpse in the garden. Those two are truly meant for each other.

People link Vordrak to a lot of things. I tend to believe it. All of it.
Hm, a bit weird that Vordrak (someone speculated to have been behind the Keffals swat email) is this few degrees of separation from Grossly Offensive, an acquaintance of the person who just so happened to swat MTG, Mister Metokur, Mr. Vickers, and potentially more this year:

There's a decent probability that he's been involved in just about every effort to drop us for the last 5 or so years. He learned his lesson about being the public figure so now he's always the silent partner. The problem that pops up when lolcows try to unite to destroy us is that they're all lolcows and always turn on each other within the first few months. One of our greatest strengths is our enemies' unbridled retardation.

I love this, Elliot could learn a thing or two from Dana about how to write. He starts off with his great awakening to being a true and honest woman and how everyone was supportive, then shifts into talking about the importance of doing whatever a hundred troons and their handmaidens say always before revealing the crime of the NYT standing up for itself and then topping off with the greater crime of allowing a single writer to defend J. K. Rowling but no, says the troon mind, I have not yet gone insane enough against my former employers and harmed my career, it's like Batman said, we wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts, I can do better:

@mailfrawd I'm so sorry for constantly tagging you as such, but may you kindly assist me in making sense of this? The only takeaways I got out of it were that he got pinged at 23:00 by some type of alert, there was some type of issue with the telemetry system Honeycomb uses, he used the toolkit to point out a potentially bad sector, and then posted the logs he gathered into a Slack channel? The fucking canine jargon interspersed with his pseudo-intellectual droning is really fucking with my head. | Original

Vordy wasn't particularly skilled at attacking the farms. He just had the advantage of being the first to go after Josh's family. The #DKF crew has tried to copy his tactics a few times like "re-doxing" his mom, but Josh has already learned the lesson that capitulation to demands is counter productive to his goals
I swear one day Vordy is gonna pull the shit he does on the wrong person and its gonna go very badly for him.
It would have probably happened already if he lived in the US, or a country other than Bongland where you need a loiscense for sporks.
He's lucky that his dementia will probably save him from his mouth and typing finger writing him a cheque his ass can't cash.

No worries, always happy to analyze this spergs posts. Wow. That's a stunningly retarded wall of text to essentially say "our experimental (non-production) environment did something weird, our tools don't really tell us what because they don't actually correlate OS metrics like context switching or disk latency but who cares it self-recovered like it was designed to". Completely unremarkable, honestly. It's fairly common for monitoring vendors to monitor themselves with their own tools (aka dogfooding) -- it presents some challenges because of infinite-esque loops but that's what makes it fun and also tends to bring out problems like the one he's highlighting here -- replication or consumer lag due to usually under-provisioning of resources. Unless you like throwing away money, most orgs don't run their prototype/staging envs at production scale.

Thank you for posting this though, the UI/UX looks atrocious and as unremarkable as the situation that Elliot describes. Coupled with the ridiculous dog fetish names I'm guessing all of the people who work at that company should probably have their laptops checked by the FBI for illegal CanineSAM.

RE: ipv4, perhaps they should consider investing in ipv6. oh wait, it's an over-engineered dumpster fire.

The second blog is intriguing but the author completely misses the point, there are tea leaves here. The opinionated minority just got yeeted from their jobs, likely because they were extremely vocal and disruptive on internal channels, making everyone around them miserable. Now they don't have any where to vent this frustration so they are dumping on social media however they can. I hear these people are struggling to find meaningful work right now at the level their inflated egos deem acceptable. Let the salt flow.
