Tony misattributes that quote to Cecilia Dhejne, the first author of the 2011 Swedish study you link to, when it was said by Henk Asscheman, one of the co-authors of a 1997 Dutch study into cross-sex hormones.

To be fair, the 1997 Dutch study did not find an increase in mortality among those taking cross-sex hormones. The 2011 Swedish study included those who had undergone genital surgery, so perhaps we could say that receiving sex-reassignment surgery increases the risk of suicide among trans-identifying people.

But the problem with both of these studies is that they are very old.

The 1997 Dutch study included 1,109 people (roughly 75% natal males) who had been taking cross-sex hormones for an average of 9 years. It reports that “[in] both the [male to female] and [female to male] transsexuals, total mortality was not higher than in the general population and, largely, the observed mortality could not be related to hormone treatment.” But as ever, the devil is in the details, and study is not open-access.

The 2011 Swedish study included 324 people (roughly 60% natal males) over the period 1973-2003. It did find that this group had a higher mortality and suicidality rate compared to the general population.

Again, the data in these studies are very old, and do not reflect the current patient population, which is far larger and now mostly teenage girls without a long history of "gender dysphoria".

The most recent study on cross-sex hormones and mental health among trans-identified children (Chen et al 2023) had two of its subjects commit suicide, giving its patient cohort a very high suicide rate.

Jesse Singal has written two detailed articles about this study. From the second:

“Of course we can’t attribute those suicides to cross-sex hormones, because we lack a control group,” said [Michael] Biggs in an email. “Likewise, we can’t attribute the improvement to the cross-sex hormones!” We’ll return to that latter point, but one needn’t make a causal argument here to be concerned. One of the most common justifications for why youth gender medicine is worth it, despite the myriad remaining unknowns, is that kids will kill themselves if they don’t go on it. Well, here was a sample of kids who had access to it in supposedly high-quality settings, with a lot of support and monitoring, and they still had a very high rate of suicide. How does that not raise questions? The researchers have nothing to say about it, other than noting the number of completed suicides and instances of “ideation.”

The issue becomes only more worrisome when you look at the study protocol we spent so much time poring over in the last post and see that kids who had severe psychiatric problems, including suicidality, were excluded from the study at the outset […].

My girlfriend, and comrade, Sunny took her life this afternoon. We haven't found a note. Its all very scattered. But she was, like the rest of us, not built to survive under capitalism. I can confidently say that one of the biggest contributors to her mental health was the pressure to need to work constantly to get by. She couldn't afford doctors, meds. She could have been okay.

She stole, a lot. And she firmly believed that anything to subvert the state and to take from corporations is a good thing. She liked sunflowers a lot.

What i'd like to ask, is tonight, or over the next week, or whenever, for as long as you are able, steal as much shit as possible (esp high end cheese). Donate it, use it yourself, with your friends and family, take as much as you possibly can as often as possible.

Tag, everywhere. Whatever you want. Fuck cops, acab, fuck the system, if you're an artist maybe sunflowers with them. Spit at the feet of cops, throw bricks through the windows of fascists.

I know all of us do work constantly to undermine as much as possible but just. I guess a reminder. Please cause as much chaos as possible wherever you are in your life, and please please tell the people you love that you love them all the time. Just fuck up as much shit as possible.
