it's been in the back of my mind every time that evan is mentioned, but i think that this is the first bit of confirmation that we've had about his cognitive ability versus his physical disabilities.

OTOH, if Evan isn’t mentally retarded as Gunt claims then abandoning him to rot in a nursing home is evil beyond almost anything Ralph has done. If he’s a mental infant Evan can’t know his family abandoned him to a welfare nursing home and has no concept of anything but basic needs being met. If only his body is damaged and his mind is fine he lives everyday knowing his family discarded him to be a ward of the state and never bothers to even call or visit. He spends every holiday alone with minimum wage workers. If Evan’s mind is fine then Ralph’s treatment of him is abhorrent and might explain Ralph’s cursed existence.

i'll take it one step further and assert that the young ragepiglet is the primary reason that evan was placed in a care facility. their mother doesn't seem to have been incapable of raising her children. she could have received proper home healthcare training and additional financial support from the state for keeping evan at home.

Like being dead if you don't get it right. It can literally cause fatal seizures. At best, it's miserable. By comparison, heroin withdrawal is basically just like a bad flu. It's theoretically possible to die but that virtually never actually happens.
