Welcome to a new year dinos! It’s 2021! No that’s not right… it’s 2022!

Wait… you’re tellin’ me it’s 2023?

Ok, did three years kind of just blow by without us noticing?!
Seriously though, the past three years have been draining for everyone—physically, emotionally, socially—and we’re all just doing our best. I know we’ve said it before and we’re likely gonna say it again, but thank you so much for the continued excitement you’ve shown us and the game. We love you and we won’t shut up about it. Sorry, that’s just how it is
And now, being back at work, excitement and “it’s-all-finally-happening” feelings are all around, especially knowing how many cool things we have in the works but can’t yet announce—but those are our little secrets!!
PS, dinos: Stick around to the end of this newsletter for a very special downloadable treat!
---
But anyway, less chatty chatty, more update-y update-y! Just a moment: I’m getting a call from the KO_OP Slack!
Koopers:
You can’t tease secrets like that and not follow through on any kind of reveal!!
Hmm, okay okay. I guess we could show something…
Koopers: Drop some new characters!! The dinos deserve it!!
Too true… that means it’s time for…
A double (wait, triple!) dino reveal!
These are Fang and Naser’s parents: Sabah and Saeed. Sabah is their mother—she’s a “tough love” style of parent who’s got a dry and deadpan sense of humour.
Both Sabah and Saeed are stern, and it can come off as unsympathetic and distant—a recipe for clashing relationships
I mean it when I say: it’s complicated.

Do you remember those delectable cheese pyramids we posted on our socials a while back? Yeah, those were courtesy of Sabah!
In this shot, Fang and Naser are video chatting with them as they’re away from home… but I wonder what the call is about?

And this is Curtis, drummer of the Swamp Babies. I’m out here trying to be impartial as our dino journalist… but Trish isn’t a fan of them, and I’m sorry but my loyalties are with Trish. And so I say: “BOOO, CURTIS!!” Ok now that that’s out of the way, can we give a little love to this gorgeous character design!?!

Now where was I with the dev update? In the previous newsletter, we took a look at what the character art, background art, and animation teams have been up to. But what about programming?
They’ve been hard at work with all kinds of optimization, integration of UI design elements, and camera effect magic!

Let’s take a look at these camera effects! This
is a cinematic narrative adventure, after all, so some movie magic has got to be at play.

Here we’ve got the famous rack focus, where focus is pulled from one focal plane (here the fire in the foreground) to a different focal plane (Naser and Reed in the background).
All this is fairly straightforward when it’s done IRL, but when it comes to a 2D setup, there’s a lot of logic involved in animating a virtual focal point across layers with specified depths. This is just one of the many tools we’ve created so that the in-game camera feels and operates like a real one.

Some of you detail-oriented dinos may have noticed this particular post-processing effect from the teaser trailer we released in November but no, there isn’t Vaseline on your screen (btw: this was indeed an Old Hollywood trick!):
that’s our in-game anime filter
! Above is a before and after of what it looks like in action.
It adds a subtle blur to the art lines, which creates a bloom. The bloom then blends with existing layers via the alpha channel, which means it's on top of the layer stack at a low transparency. The layer effect is most apparent on characters, but it still adds a really nice oomf to the backgrounds.
Would you believe me if I told you this was an accidental invention by one of our programmers? But then again… aren’t happy little accidents how all the best things come about?
Other layer effects we’ve got include rim lighting (light and shadow, baby!) and chromatic aberration (try to say that 5 times fast), so we could do a short primer on those in the future!
Which brings me to my final note: we’re looking for AMA-type questions for an upcoming potential something-something! (More secrets as usual…)
If you have any questions related to UI design, our music system, the game’s genre, or anything really, please ask us on our socials, our Discord, or in a response email here! We’ve got it set up now that you can directly reply to this newsletter! Looking forward to hearing from you hehe

So, in bringing this month’s dev update to a close, I just wanted to bring the conversation back around to taking care of ourselves and one another

We hope you were able to get a lot of rest over the break and find time to do the things that bring you joy. A simple pleasure I got a lot of enjoyment out of: finally using all the bananas in my freezer to make chocolate chip banana bread. What was yours?

We have an extra special freebie for you this month! It’s a new phone background of Fang, Reed, and Trish

So give it a download if wanna celebrate your besties by celebrating ours!
