Goodbye Volcano High - "The Future of Gaming", The Parody Game of the Beloved Snoot Game Franchise

Yeah that'd be my reaction to the idea of this game still coming out too

I thought they redesigned fang again? I could've sworn they were showing this off earlier in the thread alhamd lilah....

Anyways I see they are still hellbent on trying to give this thing """gameplay""" which I find really amusing. The voice actress PERSON excuse me for fang still sounds off to me and doesn't suite this moody bitch imo. In fact all the voices for the characters I've heard so far sound like they're from those mediocre comic fandubs you would see on something like tumblr or youtube.

My expectations are still a "mogged by snoot game/10" for this true demonstration of power for the PS5.

I want the twist ending to be that either the scientists predictions were off by a couple hours and the meteor sails right by or that the government had a plan for this and a bunch of dino miners blow up the asteroid to save everyone. The game would then try to get all high concept on you about how you shouldn't worry too much about the future and live for the now. It would be amazingly retarded.

Still wouldn't beat Saints Row IV's use of Don't Want to Miss A Thing as far as "Armageddon references in video games".

Well, that would explain why KO_OP banned me and updated their rules a few days ago...

This marked the first time that KO_OP has officially acknowledged Snoot Game and Cavemanon, and it was in anticipation of a new influx of users.

For posterity's sake, here's the current user count at time of writing. I don't believe this was much higher than it was before the announcement a couple of hours ago, and something tells me it won't get much higher than this despite the announcement.

As for the trailer itself... I don't really have a lot to say. The chainsaw teeth look really fucking stupid. The whole "all of existence is literally ending at a set date and time and nobody really seems to give as much of a shit as they should" thing I floated as a possibility, but I figured they would've gone for muh metaphors instead. The game is probably going to have massive tonal issues throughout it if they stick with that story beat as hard as they seem to be implying they will. Naomi seems to be the only character that looks vaguely decent. All of the males are scrawny and pathetic looking (Reed and Sage, can't say much about Naser as he's not fully shown), and the other females either have no figure (Trish) or too much figure (Stella) with no in-between.

It did have one joke that I liked though. Good job, KO_OP.

And, breaking news, there's a blog about the game that was just posted.
There is absolutely nothing of interest in this, having just read it myself, outside of the following line:
The performance shots put Worm Drama in the spotlight while showcasing one of Goodbye Volcano High’s strengths: the magical 2D animations (animations that people often mistake for 3D).
I want to know who the fuck is mistaking those for 3D, and that if those are the strengths, then how bad are the weaknesses?

Here are the new newsletter, including an earlier one from February 1st that somehow flew past my radar.
New Year, New Character Drops + Dino Cinematics (A)
Ramo
Art Club President

Welcome to a new year dinos! It’s 2021! No that’s not right… it’s 2022! 😬 Wait… you’re tellin’ me it’s 2023? 😵‍💫 Ok, did three years kind of just blow by without us noticing?!

Seriously though, the past three years have been draining for everyone—physically, emotionally, socially—and we’re all just doing our best. I know we’ve said it before and we’re likely gonna say it again, but thank you so much for the continued excitement you’ve shown us and the game. We love you and we won’t shut up about it. Sorry, that’s just how it is 🤷

And now, being back at work, excitement and “it’s-all-finally-happening” feelings are all around, especially knowing how many cool things we have in the works but can’t yet announce—but those are our little secrets!! 🤫

PS, dinos: Stick around to the end of this newsletter for a very special downloadable treat!
---
But anyway, less chatty chatty, more update-y update-y! Just a moment: I’m getting a call from the KO_OP Slack!

Koopers: You can’t tease secrets like that and not follow through on any kind of reveal!!
Hmm, okay okay. I guess we could show something…
Koopers: Drop some new characters!! The dinos deserve it!! 🥺
Too true… that means it’s time for…

A double (wait, triple!) dino reveal!

These are Fang and Naser’s parents: Sabah and Saeed. Sabah is their mother—she’s a “tough love” style of parent who’s got a dry and deadpan sense of humour. Both Sabah and Saeed are stern, and it can come off as unsympathetic and distant—a recipe for clashing relationships 😞 I mean it when I say: it’s complicated.
1da92b1c-e98a-8ac1-1273-aac5f342a4fc.png
Do you remember those delectable cheese pyramids we posted on our socials a while back? Yeah, those were courtesy of Sabah!
In this shot, Fang and Naser are video chatting with them as they’re away from home… but I wonder what the call is about? 👀
fa81a2e0-c3b9-8b95-152a-946c8102022f.png
And this is Curtis, drummer of the Swamp Babies. I’m out here trying to be impartial as our dino journalist… but Trish isn’t a fan of them, and I’m sorry but my loyalties are with Trish. And so I say: “BOOO, CURTIS!!” Ok now that that’s out of the way, can we give a little love to this gorgeous character design!?!
---
Now where was I with the dev update? In the previous newsletter, we took a look at what the character art, background art, and animation teams have been up to. But what about programming? They’ve been hard at work with all kinds of optimization, integration of UI design elements, and camera effect magic!
a21ff84e-ff06-e0e8-c20c-39d5abbd33ef.gif

Let’s take a look at these camera effects! This is a cinematic narrative adventure, after all, so some movie magic has got to be at play. 😎 Here we’ve got the famous rack focus, where focus is pulled from one focal plane (here the fire in the foreground) to a different focal plane (Naser and Reed in the background). All this is fairly straightforward when it’s done IRL, but when it comes to a 2D setup, there’s a lot of logic involved in animating a virtual focal point across layers with specified depths. This is just one of the many tools we’ve created so that the in-game camera feels and operates like a real one.

Some of you detail-oriented dinos may have noticed this particular post-processing effect from the teaser trailer we released in November but no, there isn’t Vaseline on your screen (btw: this was indeed an Old Hollywood trick!): that’s our in-game anime filter 🤠! Above is a before and after of what it looks like in action. It adds a subtle blur to the art lines, which creates a bloom. The bloom then blends with existing layers via the alpha channel, which means it's on top of the layer stack at a low transparency. The layer effect is most apparent on characters, but it still adds a really nice oomf to the backgrounds.

Would you believe me if I told you this was an accidental invention by one of our programmers? But then again… aren’t happy little accidents how all the best things come about? 😇

Other layer effects we’ve got include rim lighting (light and shadow, baby!) and chromatic aberration (try to say that 5 times fast), so we could do a short primer on those in the future!

Which brings me to my final note: we’re looking for AMA-type questions for an upcoming potential something-something! (More secrets as usual…) If you have any questions related to UI design, our music system, the game’s genre, or anything really, please ask us on our socials, our Discord, or in a response email here! We’ve got it set up now that you can directly reply to this newsletter! Looking forward to hearing from you hehe 💌

So, in bringing this month’s dev update to a close, I just wanted to bring the conversation back around to taking care of ourselves and one another 🫂 We hope you were able to get a lot of rest over the break and find time to do the things that bring you joy. A simple pleasure I got a lot of enjoyment out of: finally using all the bananas in my freezer to make chocolate chip banana bread. What was yours? 💞
---
We have an extra special freebie for you this month! It’s a new phone background of Fang, Reed, and Trish 🤭🥹 So give it a download if wanna celebrate your besties by celebrating ours!
Haaaave you seen the new trailer?! (A)

Sorry about that, I’m just freaking out because I’m here to let you know Goodbye Volcano High was just a part of Sony’s State of Play with a fancy new trailer and an even fancier new official release date! Get ready to laugh, cry, and catch some beats this June 15, 2023. You can see the official trailer here.

You’re all our day-ones, so I always feel at ease letting you know the deal, and I’ve never been more excited for a GVH reveal. Not only did we get to show you more of the beatcatcher gameplay for performances, but we got to show off some minigame content (poster design! doomscrolling! relatable!), showcase a character only our Discord users really know about (let’s go Sage-heads!), and your first look at our in-game D&D (it's called L&L! Did you recognize it from our Reed's class photo post?)
3290ecc3-12d4-090f-9ae5-782704518754.png
Additionally, we got to announce a few more voice actors by way of the trailer. Did anyone recognize them? We have Ozioma Akagha as Trish (Fang's bestie and bug enthusiast), Mark Whitten as Reed (the chillest velociraptor drummer you've ever met) and Abe Bueno-Jallad as Naser (charmingly uptight little brother with a lot on his plate), and Allegra Clark as Naomi (our favourite tender goodie goodie).

More than anything, we got to show what all the behind-the-scenes WIP stuff we’ve been working on looks like when it’s all put together. It’s a really special moment for us, and we’re so thankful we get to share it with y’all.
2a62c775-72ac-04a7-97c5-e784bbe6bc6d.png
We also have a new single from the Goodbye Volcano High OST, Reunion from composer and audio director Dabu (Boyfriend Dungeon, Winding Worlds) and Montreal vocalist Brigitte Naggar of Common Holly. We said it in our original game announcement but y’all better slam those headphones on and go for an angsty little snowy walk, because this song is guaranteed to bring the feels upon thee. Check it out here!

If you haven’t already (though we think by this point our newsletter subscribers have already done this), please wishlist Goodbye Volcano High; it’s now available to wishlist on Sony’s website as well, for those of you who have a PS4 or PS5. Nothing boosts our chances of success (and our chances of morale) like seeing our wishlist numbers go up, so go make us happy lil devs, will ya?

Ok, we’re going back to running around like chickens with our heads cut off, but before we leave, here’s that cute little phone background from the trailer! Enjoy it dinos!

The voices are all very generic, which I would expect, but Fang's sticks out to me, just because it's like the most normal teenage girl voice I've heard in my life, while KP insists that Fang's an edgy-wedgy they/them. The songs are also very light and cheery-sounding, but the band is very obviously supposed to be more of the wannabe-rocker rebel types. Would the trailer music be considered in the vein of something like J-pop? I don't know music.
(I can't reply to the newsletter comment for some reason-)
"Oopsie poopsie! We just realized we've been slacking for three years!"
As for Fang and Naser's parents, everything about them is just... weird. For one thing, they're strict, professional, and apparently Arabic, yet they name their children faggy names like Naser and Fang, Doesn't exactly sound like a mix that would be cool with having their daughter identify as a genderspecial, imo.
Something tells me they were added later in the story for diversity points or something, because everything about Fang's design screams American white girl.

Naser is an Arabic name I'm pretty sure. I wouldn't be surprised if Fang's birthname was Arabic as well. Either that or there's some adoption fuckery going on, which is horrifying to think about.

I expect not many people to care.

The gender specials will be pushing this hard and the press will also to pander to them after the massive L they took over Hogwarts.

I'm just here for how terrible it will be and the memes.

I feel sorry for any kids that buy this seeing "Ohh cartoon dinosaurs!" only to receive flash game fag shit.

The game play looks so boring, which does not surprise me. What does surprise me is how bad the talking animations look, especially on Fang and Nader. They barely open their jaws, and it looks stupid. With that being said, I'm weirdly excited to finally see a release date. I was so sure this thing was going to be in development hell.
