Here's my guess about what is happening behind the scenes at The Onion:
There is a troon working as a staff writer there, who pitched the article from the other day about the media having a duty to attack trans people. The pitch was accepted, and nobody told the troon it needed a bit of toning down, because they would be dogpiled on the Onion's Slack (or wherever) for being transphobic.
The article did pretty well. Staff troon (or possibly, another troon writer) feels emboldened and pitches another article. No one dares say "maybe we shouldn't do two articles on the same thing in a week" for fear of being accused of endorsing genocide.
Troon writer produces this seething unfunny interview. By this point, the self-censorship is so entrenched no one even dares to suggest editing or adding some actual jokes, because how dare you police a brave trans person's creative output when they are literally fighting for their life?
(I am not entirely pulling this scenario out of my ass, similar things have apparently gone on with lone trans staff members at other outlets)
