February 21 bug fixing build (archive)
There was a bug preventing one of the tutorials from being completed, so I wanted to release a bug-fixing build.

The changelog for this build might look small, but that’s because I’ve been spending less of my time working on bug fixes and more of my time making progress on one of my checklist features. It’s almost complete, but I don’t plan to include it in the next build. Why? I’ll explain.

I’d like to collect information on how players complete their objectives when certain game mechanics are unavailable. What alternate strategies do players use when their default strategies are disallowed? Would players become frustrated with the game if they were no longer allowed to use certain features that they’ve become over-reliant on? Does the game actually become more fun and interesting when the player isn’t allowed to use certain shortcuts? What exploits are currently available that need to be fixed and removed?

To truly draw meaningful conclusions about these subjects, I would need to present players with a build of the game that is intended to be as balanced and exploit-free as possible, and then publicly challenge the playerbase to look for exploits and game-breaking flaws. The first step is patching up certain exploits that I’m already aware of, and making various changes to student and rival routines so that it’s never insanely easy to kill rivals with zero effort.

So, before I say, “Hey guys, play this build of the game and try to break it, I bet you can’t!” I first want to…

  1. Balance some mechanics that I know are already busted.
  2. Redesign some rival routines that I know are already full of exploits.
  3. Create an interface for enabling/disabling certain features, to challenge players to play the game with/without mechanics features being available.
One of those mechanics-that-needs-to-be-rebalanced is an aspect of the 1980s Mode tutorial, so we can add another item to the list:

4. Update the 1980s Mode tutorial to walk the player through the new version of an important rebalanced game mechanic.

In short, there is a long list of things I have to do before I can release the upcoming “Try and break the game, I dare you!” build. The point is to openly challenge players (and YouTubers) to try and expose exploits, and I want the game to be airtight before I do that. I’ll have to knock multiple things off of my checklist before I’ll be able to release a build that seems to contain a big exciting new feature, but when I do, I think you’re going to have fun playing the “I dare you to break it” update.

Okay! With that explanation out of the way, let’s move on. To see a list of the improvements and changes in the latest build, scroll down past this haunting artwork by haihondaitao!

Improvements

  • Previously, it was possible for the player to conceal a corpse in a garbage bag even if a character was standing right next to it and mourning it / guarding it. This was silly, so it has been removed from the game. From now on, if a character is mourning/guarding a corpse, the character will immediately notice and realize that you are the killer, trying to cover up evidence of your crime.
  • Too many players did not understand the “Reputation updates at specific times of day” system, and were reporting “My rep isn’t updating!” as a bug. So, the “REP WILL UPDATE AFTER CLASS” message is back.
  • If the player was kicked out of a tutorial while in the middle of a dismembering animation, the tutorial would be blurry afterwards. This bug has been fixed.
  • Fixed bug that caused the game to think that 4 extra instances of blood clothing had been created when killing Osana with the Fan Decapitation method.
  • If the player held a bloody school uniform next to a door, the blood texture would appear on the door. This bug has been fixed.
  • Fixed bug that allowed the player to remove their raincoat before the appropriate time in the Dismemberment tutorial.
  • Fixed bug that prevented blood splatters from appearing when using the Fan Decapitation method on Osana.
  • Fixed bug that prevented the player from being able to complete the Immolation tutorial.
  • Fixed bug that prevented blood stains from appearing on the magical girl wand.

So...Alex wants people to post their framerates?

Yeah, I see no possible way this can turn out well as Alex's ego takes a pounding by everyone pointing out how broken everything is.

You got a problem with Yandere Slideshow?
I've spent a large amount of time using this machine to generate AI art.

The few seconds it takes to open Yandere Simulator instills an entirely incomparable amount of fear for my GPU's continued existence that all of my months of art generation can never approach.

Here's an interesting tidbit about the Discord server. The Forums section has a glitch. Usually you have to be a paying sap to make a post in or even see the forums, and that rings true in the general forum according to the cyan star. However, in the modding forum, you don't need to pay to see or post.

Lol even his Discord server is buggy.

If Yandere Simulator had a small town, part of it might look like this… (archive)
Sometimes, I get a little curious. I think, “What if?” and I just want to set aside an hour or two to experiment a little bit.
You can download it here:

I archived the download link too just for the sake of it: https://archive.ph/MHNup

I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm still wondering why Mulberry's still around. She posted a massive backlog of images to her DeviantArt in 2021-2022, and it really puts into perspective just how much free labor Alex has, and is currently getting out of her. If the man hasn't tapped by now, he won't ever. Where does her income come from?

Either she has a job or she gets commissions from people (very likely Alex) while some could be freebies it'd very likely others were commissions by Alex but that he told her not to disclose that. Or other people (very likely yansim fans) commission her. Tbh she has a easy to digest anime style if you don't pay attention to the details

Crazy conspiracy but maybe Alex managed to talk her into doing something taboo and now he's blackmailing her.
Wouldn't surprise me considered he threatened suicide in form of emotional manipulation and other asshole moves he did over the years.

Her art isn't... good per se, but she's gotten better over the years, and it's not like artistic skills are worth nothing. I've seen a few commissions here and there, but def not enough to constitute her income. I do believe she has a Patreon though. Hopefully she does have an actual job, she needs to have a life outside of riding the coattails of Alex's drama.

That sounds like a feature he would implement in yandere simulator.
I really doubt Alex is stupid enough to involve himself in legal fuckery aside from plagiarism. The Farms has some evidence of Mulbs simping in Alex's streams as early as 2016, so I really think she's doing it willingly. I think a former volunteer also came on here and said she's obsessed with him, because he's a man that pays attention to her. I'm sure Alex takes advantage of that. A manipulator's best friend is always a blind admirer.

I'm pretty sure the two of them dated for a while (I think I saw it further back? Maybe I'm hallucinating). But I'm not surprised that they were both so repulsive they couldn't handle each other though.

She has never drawn anything that wasn't obviously traced (and even then) that had the head, neck, and pelvis in the correct place. Figure art isn't supposed to be melting clocks.

She could be OK for that style if she just studied anatomy a little bit, but no, everything has to be a boneless horror.

I haven't been able to read all of the thread, but I've been through most of it, and I don't think there's evidence of Alex dating anyone at all.

Alex is holding her back tbh. The fact that she only uses like five expressions and the extreme camel toes are always what stick out the most to me.

Commissions, I guess. She hangs out with fetish artists like that troon Rin-chan and, well, Alex, so it's pretty obvious that she isn't above drawing something like this. Coomers have very low standards and AI art is pretty boring, so she is safe for now.

Crazy conspiracy but maybe Alex managed to talk her into doing something taboo and now he's blackmailing her.

No, that's a stretch. People, who still associate with Alex consist of the following groups - idiots, who ignore many hitpieces on Alex and think that this shit will be released some time soon, thus becoming their ticket to stardom; losers, who's never unlocked their full potential and wasted years on this feature creep, they keep doing it just out of "sunken cost fallacy"; degenerates, who want to hang out with Alex and his circle of fellow coomers; pedos, because it's Discord; children, because it's YS.
Mulberry perfectly fits the second group, since she has never improved over the years of drawing, she is a dirty tracer and her "style" is easily recognizable, but most importantly, she hasn't been able to do something notable outside of YS, her "recognition" has been fading away right with the popularity of YS.

I'm pretty sure the two of them dated for a while (I think I saw it further back? Maybe I'm hallucinating). But I'm not surprised that they were both so repulsive they couldn't handle each other though.
No, I doubt that was something more than a speculation, their relationship is more like a "master-tool". Mulberry has a battered wife syndrome i.e. for her it's better to have abusive and toxic Alex than having no one at all. I think, she was in a relationship where her boyfriend was abusive and she left him right when she started working for Alex, so he's become her new abuser.

I haven't been able to read all of the thread, but I've been through most of it, and I don't think there's evidence of Alex dating anyone at all.
Well, yes, anyone, but not anything.

"If you don't follow the rules, you're not a great person."
Yeah, remember how Alex didn't follow the rules of Twitch?

March 1 update (archive)
Hello!

New build! Multiple features have been added/updated. Some are minor aesthetic changes, others are noteworthy improvements to gameplay.

I’ve prepared a video to describe and explain the most significant aspect of this update:
To read a list of everything else that was added or changed in the latest build, click Continue Reading!

Throw Update
There are now two “preparing to throw object” states – “Obvious” and “Subtle.”

You can switch between these two states by pressing the “Yandere Button” – it’s RB on controller and left control on keyboard. (This information isn’t explained anywhere in-game, so I’ll have to remember to make it display onscreen in the next build…)

Some information about these two throw states:

  • When subtly aiming, you don’t look suspicious, but you can’t throw very far.
  • When obviously aiming, you look suspicious, but you can throw much farther.
  • When subtly aiming, you can repeatedly throw objects faster than when you’re obviously aiming.
Oh, and one more thing:

The maximum distance that you can throw an object is now increased when you upgrade your Physical Education stat.

New Counselor Model
The Guidance Counselor’s 3D model has been updated to more accurately reflect her official character artwork:

Panty Shot Alternative
Two of Osana’s elimination methods – Expulsion and Rejection – required the player to take panty shots with Osana’s phone, in order to frame her for taking lewd photographs. However, I want to be able to say “You can 100% the game without taking a single panty shot,” so I’ve implemented an alternative way to put lewd photographs onto Osana’s phone:

If you bring Osana’s phone to the Computer Lab, you can now sit down at a computer, find lewd photographs on the Internet, and put them onto Osana’s phone. This way, you can perform the Expulsion and Rejection elimination methods without ever letting a pair of panties enter your field of vision.

Improvements

  • When a club shuts down, it no longer makes sense for that club to put forth any recruitment efforts. So, from now on, whenever a club shuts down in 1980s Mode, the “Join our club!” advertisement stands will disappear from outside of that club.
  • Added a new Scheme to Info-chan’s Schemes menu – a Scheme that explains how to perform the “Drive to Murder” elimination method (currently about driving Horuda to murder, rather than driving a rival to murder).
  • If the Music Club shuts down, the turtle and its aquarium will disappear from the room, since it doesn’t make sense to keep a living animal in a room that nobody can access.
  • If you activate Yandere Vision when security cameras are present at school, you will now see red outlines indicating the security cameras’ cone of vision.
  • The love letter that Ayano holds on the title screen wasn’t really a good-looking asset, so it has been replaced with a better-looking one.
  • The “students refuse to go to locker at lunchtime” restriction now only applies to rivals; it doesn’t apply to other students.
  • Senpai’s profile in Mission Mode was inconsistent with the events of Mission Mode’s timeline, so it has been adjusted.
Fixes

  • If the player annoyed a teacher with a radio and then performed one giggle nearby that teacher, the teacher would react as if they had discovered the player repeatedly turning the radio on and off, or repeatedly giggling. This bug has been fixed.
  • Fixed bug that would cause a “chromatic abberation” effect to appear in Ayano’s room if the player got a game over and then selected “Reset Week” while their sanity was low enough to trigger the “chromatic abberation” effect at school.
  • If the player participated in a tutorial that involved Kokona’s death and then advanced out of the tutorial into Ayano’s room, Kokona would be marked as dead in the Student Info screen. This bug has been fixed.
  • If the player spoke to a character who was in the process of searching for a lost phone, the player would not correctly return to their search routine after the conversation had ended. This bug has been fixed.
  • If the player summoned a tutorial window from Info-can’s Favors screen or the Tutorials list, there would be multiple redundant button prompts onscreen at the same time. This bug has been fixed.
  • Fixed bug that prevented Mission Mode from allowing the player to load any Mission Mode ID that involved about 50% of the game’s weapons (anything after the Old Axe was added to the game).
  • If Osana was splashed with water during her Wednesday lunchtime event and never took a photo for Sepnai, she would still show a photo to Senpai later that day. This bug has been fixed.
  • If the player dyed their hair blonde, their new hair color wouldn’t be reflected in the befriend/betray Osana cutscene. This bug has been fixed.
  • Fixed bug that caused Megami’s school uniform to be grayscale in the “Congratulations on beating the Alphabet Killer Challenge” screen.
  • Fixed bug that prevented Mission Mode from allowing the player to load any Mission Mode ID that involved wearing a lab coat.
  • Fixed bug that caused weird behavior from Osana if she was splashed with water during her Wednesday lunchtime event.
  • Fixed bug that made Ayano’s pose in a weird way if she laughed while holding the science club’s cleaning robot.
  • Updated the guidance counselor’s 3D model to more accurately reflect her official character artwork.
  • Fixed bug that would prevent students from being able to open doors after loading a save.
  • Fixed bug that allowed players to stand on top of the table in the Headmaster’s office.
  • Fixed bug that prevented teachers from being able to open doors in the gymnasium.
  • Fixed typo on title screen – “Load Game” was misspelled. Oops!

March 2 bug fixing build (archive)
Hello!

Some users reported a bug that was making the corkboard sequence play in the daytime or play in 1980s Mode, which wasn’t intentional. I couldn’t actually replicate those bugs! However, I put in some code to manually force the game out of that situation if it ever somehow happens. I feel that it was important to release a new build with that adjustment as quickly as possible, so here’s a new build.

To read a list of everything that is new or different in the latest build, please scroll down past this outstanding artwork by blue_nori_snow!

Improvements
On a day involving a memorial for a dead student, the Drama Club cannot practice on the stage, and have to remain in their clubroom during their club activity. However, if the player participated in a Drama club activity on such a day, they would see a camera shot of the empty gym, instead of the clubroom. From now on, the player will see a shot of the inside of the Drama Club, instead.

Previously, when the Gardening Club shut down, some metal bars would appear and block the entrance to the club. From now on, those metal bars will be a metal gate. It is possible to lockpick that gate, too. This means that, even if the Gardening Club shuts down, you can still access gasoline (as long as you craft or purchase a lockpick).

There is now a button prompt onscreen to let the player know that they can switch between “Subtle” and “Obvious” aiming. The button is now the Q key (or B button on gamepad).

Raibaru will no longer warn Osana about the smell of nearby gasoline if she is currently busy with another activity, such as returning a dropped weapon to its proper place.

In 202X, the nurse’s cabinet cannot be lockpicked. To communicate this, the button prompt for lockpicking has been changed to “Cannot Be Lockpicked”.

Updated the texture for the statue outside of the Art Club.

There was a bug that would cause a female character’s bust to revert back to default size upon becoming a ragdoll (either due to death or being tranquilized). This bug has been fixed.

During a stealth mission, if the player paused the game immediately after exiting Yandere Vision, the player would be able to move while the game was paused. This bug has been fixed.

Previously, it was possible to activate Yandere Vision and pause/unpause the game while watching the “a corpse has been dumped into the sewer” cutscene. This bug has been fixed.

If the player had Yandere Vision active before initiating a dismemberment, Yandere Vision would remain active during the dismemberment animation. This bug has been fixed.

Fixed bug that would cause the “Random Mission” feature to generate a mission that asked the player to kill a target with a weapon that wasn’t available in Mission Mode.

Fixed bug that caused the “Ayano standing in front of corkboard” cutscene to play in 1980s Mode. This was not intentional! It’s only supposed to be for 202X Mode.

There was a bug that was preventing Senpai’s Student Info page from displaying his info outside of Mission Mode. This bug has been fixed.

The new counselor model wasn’t being used in the Memorial cutscene. Oops! This has been fixed.

Nemesis manga update! Chapter 3 released! (archive)
On August 1, 2019, I released “Retribution”, a short manga that revealed the origins and motivations of “Nemesis”, the mysterious girl who hunts and kills Ayano in Mission Mode. Three years later, on March 19th, 2022, I released a sequel to that manga – a continuation of the story. It ended on a cliffhanger, with Ayano and Nemesis about to battle. I’m proud to announce that, after one year, Chapter 3 is ready!

Chapter 1 was 7 pages long, and Chapter 2 was 24 pages long. Chapter 3 is just a tiny bit shorter at 21 pages, but every one is packed with action! I really hope that you’re going to enjoy reading it!

(It’s formatted in the style of a traditional Japanese manga, so remember to read the panels from right to left!)

As you can see in the blog posts where each chapter of the manga was announced, the first two chapters of Retribution were translated into TWENTY different languages! A testament to the fact that no matter how many years pass, Yandere Simulator retains passionate fans all over the world! Just like before, foreign fans of the game are welcome to translate chapter 3 and e-mail me a link to a zip file containing all of the translated pages.

And, to make it easier for you, here’s a link to Chapter 3 without any words in the speech bubbles:
