We do not police ourselves, and unlike the catholic church, Bishops are told to report any crimes and are considered court mandated reporters, meaning if they don't report sexual abuse or something else the law and the church will come down much harder. You must be thinking of the Fundamentalist which has no association with the church. They are a completely different story. Mormons don't live in "groups" or "communities" outside of Utah, and in Utah it's not because they want to it's simply because when you are 55% of the population it happens.

Keep in mind that my initial post was about Sally's experience with (and exit from) the Mormons as a potential factor, and not about Mormons as a whole. Not knowing exactly what part of Mormonism she was a part of made it possible that she was in a church that was not run well (not necessarily yours). Churches of any description do not have to be fundamental in order for sexual abuse to occur, though in the Mormon case it certainly helps as you pointed out. In this way we seem to be in agreement(?).

As for the policing, it can take many forms, even in my area (not Utah). There are controls in place in the name of accountability and there are still plenty of rules and archived information that the Mormon church keeps on current/past members. There are also particular rules for those on their 2 year mission (under 2 for women) including internet restrictions, among other things that vary from place to place. This would qualify as policing behavior though, again, this isn't limited to Mormons.

I should probably also clarify that by "community", I don't mean "commune". A small but meaningful distinction.
