Almost all of the communities they infiltrated were "nerdy" communities with focuses on things like fantasy, sci-fi, anime, comics, etc. Since those are all hobbies that are already out of the mainstream and tend to be full of people who usually don't feel like they "fit in" in the mainstream and often have major eccentricities themselves, they tend to be very open and accepting communities. They took advantage of the very tolerant nature of these sub-cultures.

They're terminally-online loners without kids. They can sink thousands of unpaid hours into volunteer-run online communities like Reddit or Wikipedia. Generally speaking, the more time you spend participating in these communities, the more karma and reputation you accumulate. Karma and reputation helps them move up the ladder into moderation. Then they bring in their friends and take the whole thing over.

Shut-ins have unlimited free time. Any online group that values its integrity must limit the degree to which more time investment => more power.

Partly it's that bleeding hearts see anyone they pity as a good guy, and they will only act up if the bad guy (the "Other" and anyone with the sense to call them out) forces them to. They get the normies to shield and pander to them till they can act like this.

That, and they can afford to become tranny jannies because there's nothing else in their lives outside of cooming. They can attack you nonstop while you tend to your responsibilities.

Also, couldn't federated services like pleroma or mastodon be viable alternatives for the less technologically literate?
