Depending on what Jack retains, they could be using a sit-to-stand lift. (And also hoping the facility is protective of their workers.)

This allows for bedside commode use, toilet if the bathrooms are modern enough, and makes it
much easier to clean someone's peri area after they're done using either.
Hoyer is a brand name of mechanical patient lift, but now it's used generically to mean "full lift," the engine-hoist type lifts. Hoyer the company makes all kinds of lifts.
It looks like a fairly modern facility, so I would bet they have shower rooms and tubs with pull-up sides. Nursing home is the long haul; it takes a lot to be on bed baths eternally.
Anecdotally, Jack is a known type of rehab patient. If you let someone who behaves like Jack use a bedpan, they will never get out of bed to toilet again. From there it's a slippery slope to "well, I have a pad under me; I'll ring when I'm done and you can change it."
It's not embarrassing to shit yourself if it's a deliberate act, and if it's a power play over members of the service industry.
Did anyone else notice that he was woken up at 0600 "to
give blood," not for a blood draw? This isn't altruism. He's not giving it away. Nobody is using that blood for any purpose other than taking care of Jack's health for him. (Wonder if he's on warfarin.)
