Someone did a video about this, forgot who but in short its the cheapest cut of beef there is and its exorbitantly overpriced simply because they know they can get away with it

If you make your own jerked off beef it is much cheaper

It takes a lot of meat to produce a small amount of delicious meat stick

True, especially when you consider a lot of the weight is water.

Because people will pay $20 to not have to slice up all the meat and use a dehydrator/cool oven for hours.

If you think the mark up is excessive, maybe start a budget beef jerky company and take a meaty chunk of the market (pun intended).

The costs of making it isn't insignificant, curing meat even with airflow and a warming element has to have a fair amount of quality control around it and also as @Balalaika Z Bree said it's time if not labour intensive, Jerkey was created as a way of getting the most bang for your buck so you'd be able to do something else while your curing it while preparing the rest of the carcase for more immediate consumption, it was as a survival guide said "A secondary food process".

Why is coconut milk so expensive?

Ever tried miking a tree?

Certain areas have outlet/closeout grocery stores where a lot of times you can find that shit for like $6 for one of the larger sized bags, among other criminally discounted stuff. They're usually independently operated so they can be kind of low key; keep an eye out to see if there's any around if you're really hankering for that meat.

But yes the whole thing's a sham, dried meat just costs a lot because people are willing to pay a lot, because they're fat and lazy and beef jerky is convenient and it makes you look manly when you eat it.

I imagine it's because of the process it goes through. But yeah, it is very expensive. So expensive I don't buy it much anymore. A lot of it sucks and is full of sugar. If you haven't been paying attention to modern health trends sugar is not that good for you. The lowest amount of sugar I have seen in beef jerky is about 5 grams the highest being 7 grams. For some reason many companies that make beef jerky think brown sugar has to be used. You can't make beef jerky without it.

In the early 2000's I used to eat this stuff called Pemmican. That's the name of the brand. I know what pemmican is though. It had a featherhead Indian on the front of the bag. But even back then it was pretty expensive. No where near what it is now though. Then around the mid to late 2010's I started eating Bridgford beef jerky. It was ok but not that great. Then one day I couldn't find it anywhere. Back when I used to go to Walmart, I saw this stuff in the snack aisle called Wild Bill's beef jerky. It was strips of jerky the kind you would see in jars in stores, but this was in a bag. This was the best beef jerky I had ever had. It was expensive but it was good. It was not wet soft and sweet like so many beef jerky brands. The best part it had no sugar in it. The little nutritional chart on the back of the bag said no sugar. I ate it for a while. I would get a bag whenever I saw it. But looking in the ingredients list it said corn syrup. So I stopped eating it. I haven't had any in years.

The Wild Bill's beef jerky was like old school beef jerky. The way beef jerky should be. It was super dry and all it tasted of was smoke flavoring and some salt. Beef jerky shouldn't be sweet and wet. The Wild Bills jerky would make your jaws sore if you ate a lot of it. It was pretty tough at least initially.

These days if I eat beef jerky, I get the Jack Links sugar free jerky. It's dry and it doesn't taste sweet obviously. I can't stand sweetened meat. The problem with the Jack Link's sugar free stuff is that it cost nearly $8 for a 2.3 oz bag. I don't get it often. These days if I want a meat snack I just get those Duke's sausages. They come in a plastic zip-lock bag and you get more of them than you do the jerky for the same amount of money. I can get like 5-6ounces of the Dukes sausages for about $7-9 depending on where I buy them.
Try Aldi they have some cheap Jerky there. My favorite is Old Trappers and Tillamook but damn they booty expensive.
Old Trapper isn't that good. Not the worst but not that good.
