Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

"choices matter" mechanics are almost always a waste of time and retarded, because people and by extension writers & developers are always biased.

I've never played a game where, for example, both factions are morally grey and just lead to different outcomes instead of "everyone dies because you joined the evil people who have no redeeming qualities because we can't be bothered with good writing & world building" or "everyone lives and is happy because you picked the GoodGuys™"

The closest thing to actually morally grey I've seen is FNV where while the legion does despicable acts, it's shown & told in the world itself that they provide security and safety over a huge area simply because they're cutthroat to dealing with crime.

That's what made the legion interesting to me, but even then they got shafted with the quest side of things, you can tell that the devs at least somewhat tried but due to time crunch went "well damn near noone is going to pick these guys because we set them up as initially evil, so fuck it, we'll neuter their quests to save time ".

Telltale Games' choices matter mechanic was such bullshit.

They obviously didn't.

This leads to my other opinion: Nintendo is a trashfire company that is just as bad as Activision and Ubisoft. From Driftcons having never been fixed to reusing the same fucking map and art style for $70, it's time people realize that the best way to play Nintendo games is emulate them on a Steam Deck.
It does piss me off to see Nintendo's extremely shitty behavior getting a pass where no other company would just because it is Nintendo and they can do no wrong. Just amiibos should have been enough to get them railed. Locking in-game content behind plastic crap you have to buy outside of the game? That's retarded. How many cool unlockables in BOTW were gated behind Amiibo trash? Or how about the Nintendo Pass? Fifty bucks for ancient games that run and look worse than almost any other piece of emulation software INCLUDING the Wii and WiiU emulation? Fuck off.

Their one saving grace when it comes to this kind of shit is that their content is very easy to pirate.

Here's a genuinely unpopular opinion on video games: video games as a hobby is basically dead and will only get worse.

Remember the days when AAA developers would put out great games on a regular basis because that's how they made money? Well why do that when you can make one live services game and host it for a decade farming MTX for billions of dollars?

Rockstar used to make tons of great games regularly but now has only made one in the past 5 years (RDR2), and has never been more financially successful.

Even the new entries in storied IPs like Diablo from legendary developers like Blizzard are basically casinos with a thin veneer of video game on top, a Skinner box full of every dirty psychological trick in the book designed by Vegas addiction experts to keep you playing - and paying - whether you like it or not. And this is the cream of the AAA tier.

Don't forget that when games finally DO come out these days, they're broken, unfinished, buggy, "early access" etc., developers will basically shovel any old piece of shit out the door as fast as possible to get that bag and fuck the fans, they're just suckers who deserve to be parted from their money anyway, right?

"There have never been more indies to play", bitch if your average person wanted to play thousands of tiny shovelware clone games with shitty retro graphics etc. they wouldn't be buying PlayStation's and Xboxes and gaming PCs, since you can play the average indie on a TI calculator from the 90s.

I've been playing since the Commodore 64 days but after Cyberpunk, Modern Warfare 2 and Victoria 3, I turned my old gaming PC into a server and bought a MacBook I'm using to learn Blende,r and 3D printing, and music production and all sorts of other shit that takes a bit more effort than just launching another match, but is much more rewarding than having to dismiss another popup that says "buy this digital dress for your video game dolly before it's too late!".

The only winning move is not to play. 👍🏻

You must've missed the entire Skylanders fiasco. It was so much worse than Amiibo, and SO much more expensive. And bonus, also dragged Spyro through the mud. And people fucking cheered for it. I remember doomer-ing about it even then.

Even gutted as they are, the Legion is the best choice and faction in the Mojave.

BotW felt padded as hell with "puzzle" dungeons that barely get more difficult than what you find in Highlights for Children
I agree with you, but I want to take a moment to post my unpopular fact

Nintendo games are designed for children. Always have, always will be.

Nerds and faggots need to stop with the "no, they're meant for the *family*" cope when it comes to this and their cartoons.

Could use the same argument for soda.

There is a world of difference between 'Children' and 'family' media. And you'd have to be peak retardation to not realize that.

It's the difference between Seasme Street and Loony Tunes. Between Hello Kitty games, and Nintendo.

One makes parents want to kill themselves, the other is at least passable.

Warhammer Darktide is an unfinished, buggy mess that took massive steps back from earlier games by the same developer, and was obviously made to sell as many cosmetic microtransactions as possible. It's everything that's wrong with modern gamedev, and its launch felt like a legit scam.

I also can't stop playing because the minute to minute gameplay is so good. It's probably my favorite game of 2022, and it fucking enrages me that I can't recommend it to people. Send help.

You have to be an absolute fucking retard to not understand that Zelda is designed around children and not adults. Hence why the series suddenly had "easy" puzzles after whatever game came out when you passed the age of 13

That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, but there is nothing more pathetic than childless weirdos who obsess about Nintendo coping by saying it's "family games, not kids games"

one time I got really stoned before bed and decided to play my 3DS and woke up to find I had not only installed A Link to the Past, but also made it all the way to the dark world and I had no memory of any of that, but I probably had a great time

also I was too stupid as a kid to get past the Ice Palace in Link to the Past so I didn't end up beating that game until I was an adult

But did you spend years trying to beat it, or just not touch it again until you were an adult?
I did play the GBA version when I was a teenager, but I think I dropped out at Misery Mire (the 6th dungeon, right after Ice Palace) because I just got bored and didn't wanna put in the effort. Then later on I just went back and beat the SNES version. I can't remember if I used a guide or not, but I know I didn't have one as a kid. I didn't complete any Zelda games but Ocarina when I was little, they got too hard, or maybe too long.

It wasn't very satisfying to finally beat Zelda ALttP after all those years. I freakin' love that game, but even I'll admit, it's very frontloaded. The latter half of the Dark World isn't very fun. If the game actually did end after the 6th dungeon, it would have been the perfect length.

The one caveat I'd have here is that if you have someone who's like, 50 or 60, never played video games before but wants to try, you could get away with loaning them your console and copy and they'd probably enjoy it while sucking shit because they've never played a game before. That's where I can see a family angle to it.

But the narratives and puzzles and general difficulty, yeah, they're clearly aimed at kids. I don't understand on any level why people still fervently buy Pokemon games well into their 20s and 30s - it's the same thing every time.
