Secondly, because of the historical (and I suspect ongoing) shortage of guided air to air weapons, Russia still puts a bigger focus on dogfighting than western air forces.

So, yeah. I can absolutely imagine some mad Russian taking out a drone in a weird and memeworthy manner.

That could be just it. Wing tipping maybe less damaging than a full crash, and it may just mess up a drone's guidance system and glitch it out, or at least send it into a spiral. The memes are splendid though. A good day to be a kiwi.

I think it's more cockiness from the lightning strike against Ukrainians back in late august 2014 when the Russians actually did intervene directly to destroy the Ukrainian forces near and in Donetsk by three BTG's.

Cockiness, assumptions and frankly I get the feeling RuMoD didn't expect to even really go into Ukraine proper. Seeing as BTG's were closer to parade-grounds formations rather than anything even close to their full infantry complement.

That and the officer "rot" that started in the 70's Soviet era and became institutional with Russia, is pretty much exposed in such scale of warfare. Wonder just how much of high-ranking officer losses in this war can be attributed to fragging.
