@jackie_ess yes, absolutely—i think that’s a difference of emphasis rather than of kind; there aren’t (as far as I can think of) any other rich, white, trans masculine authors with anything like Gessen’s institutional security, and I agree with your implicit explanation of the fact. I’ve been at this panel at Harvard for the last few days on “the responsibility of the public intellectual”—if it’s any consolation, which it probably shouldn’t be, embarrassment over the designation was pretty much the only thing the speakers had in common. a formulation began to emerge towards the end about “responsibility to whom,” the point being (in re. Gramsci, obviously) that it only makes sense to talk about responsibility in relation to particular social constituencies with shared interests. I was the only tw there, and possibly the only f*g of any kind, and it did make me realize that I don’t know how to talk to cishet people anymore, and I do so quite rarely. I experience most of my antagonisms and disagreements being with other queer and trans people, or did until recently, but I suppose that’s a sign of accountability? generalized annoyance and a feeling of being misunderstood and underrated—at least I want to be understood by the qu**rs; mostly I want my straight colleagues to back the fuck off at this point. anywayyyyyyy
