From an ethical standpoint, medical professionals also have to consider a patient's long-term welfare, and are obligated to refuse to perform procedures that are dangerous or give no net benefit to the patient and would permanently destroy their quality of life...and ideally, would consider the desire of the patent to undergo such a mutilating procedure grounds to recommend psychiatric treatment instead of elective disfiguring surgery.

In most cases, people should do as they wish provided it does not harm anybody else...but there does come a point where other people have to step in and stop somebody who is mentally ill from harming themselves. There is a fair debate as to what that line is, but I would put medically-transitioning firmly in the latter category.

People aren't free to kill themselves, either. It's widely recognized that people who are a danger to themselves need restrictions for their own safety. We intervene when people try to commit suicide and also when they injure themselves, as obviously the acts of someone who is not fully competent to live independently in society (at least not until he gets better). But it's almost the opposite when they ask someone else to do it to them, then it can become institutionalized and acceptable.

what is truly astounding to me. i know this thread correctly calls these surgeries experimental all time so it won't astound you, is that these aren't treated as experiments. over here, we britbongs need to submit requests for licenses to the home office for every animal experiment. in those requests, every foreseen possibility needs to be addressed. if something unforeseen happens, you either sacrifice all the animals in the experiment (i don't think this is mandatory, in fact i'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do it, but its often easier than the other option) or apply for a new license with that eventuality either resolved via changes in protocol or with it listed as a possibility. you need to demonstrate the utility of your experiments and that cruelty is minimised to be allowed to experiment on sentient creatures. some exceptions are made for human experimentation where the subjects will die, like actually die not a half arsed 41% attempt, and the experiment is a hail mary pass.

i know brits care more about animals than people, as demonstrated by their charity donations, but the fact that straight up experiments on people are A OK but doing this to animals is a pain in the arse is nuts.

As for doctors, many of the surgeons that participate don’t do it full time but usually practice in their field and have dick/vagina chopping as a side gig: Urologists, anesthesiologists, micro surgeons, etc. Even some of the plastic surgeons have other plastic surgery gigs.
