I think the collapse fantasy maybe gives an otherwise upsetting and dull life a serious, important flavor. Also perhaps an escape hatch for men (and men pretending to be women) from far left urban culture that tends to see toxic masculinity everywhere. This way they can still be good allies but their stereotypical male interests are okay again because now they’re in service of bashing the fash.
I think it's also a reaction to something that's developed especially in online leftist circles, which is this kind of performative cynicism and lack of hope for the future. I sperged a bit about it here in terms of how it relates to gender.
Expressing any kind of positive emotion about the future of society is cringe in these circles now, and can get you ostracized if you do it too much. The only "valid" opinion is that society is doomed and the planet is burning and fascists are about to kill us all. So one of the only acceptable outlets for young men's fantasies and plans about the future is revolutionary LARPing.
No wonder that type latched onto the TUR so much. Unlike right-wing revolutionary LARPers, they can't even fantasize about settling down in an off-grid homestead and raising kids, because that's fascist and heteronormative. All that's left is the idea of non-hierarchical anarchist furry communes, and the TUR handed them an example of that.
