I think the attraction of self-DX'ing autism and PDs for these folk is that the received wisdom is that you can't do very much about either, so you don't need to make any effort to behave differently and people just need to aCCept u aS u AREDiagnostic manuals are horoscopes for millennials.
Just like when kids used to look up the “characteristics” of Pisces and go: “Oh, I’m kindhearted but hide it behind a facade of not caring? OMG! That’s totally me!”
They look up symptoms of mental disorders and go: “Introverted, socially awkward?! UNUSUAL INTERESTS?! I’m on the spectrum! Nobody else I know is into houseplants!”
If you just have plain ol' social anxiety and slight depression, people suggest therapy and meds and trying to get better and behave differently. And these folk don't want that. They want to behave like muppets have everyone make special accommodations for them.
