Lucy Lawless does pretty well for herself. She was great in the Spartacus series (an action TV show where she gets naked a ton), she has a recurring role on a show called Salem and she was in Ash vs Evil Dead on Starz. She's also been in a bunch of other stuff as smaller characters like Parks and Recreation. They make it seem like Lawless was cast out of Hollywood after Xena.

Also you're right that it's a reboot and they want to make the characters different (openly lesbian I guess). So it would be weird to use the same actors but change the character around. And a quick look shows that the show is being done by Lawless' husband. So in their minds I guess he's discriminating against his own fucking wife.
