Nah, the photo could be from the eighties, it can be surprising how badly dated clothes and hairstyles from then look today. Jos looks like he was as insufferable a child as he is an adult.

Middle-class to New Money Brits are always [at LEAST] ten years behind in fashion. An American friend told me that she recently re-watched the first season on Monty Python and had to double-check that the show started in 1969 and not 1960.
Joe does also look 55 rather than 40 - it's just that the picture of his mother doesn't do much to prove it wasn't taken in the 80s.

I will never be over it. When I first saw it, I thought, jokingly, that somehow Jesse Singal had persuaded someone in the NY photog scene to take it. Someone MUST have had a grudge to record and print a picture this ugly. I want to know the story of how this picture made it into the US newspaper of record, recorded for all of foreseeable human history. Like DAMN, what a savage burn.

If photographers hold a camera a little low and tilt it up to shoot, your gut and butt look bigger. If photographers hold a camera a little high and tilt it down to shoot, you body looks thinner and your head looks bigger.

As a result, Joseph looks even more poorly turned out than the striped mega pants can do on their own.

Obviously the NYT photog wasn't doing them any favors with the angles, but I think @FarmVille has it right, this is just how they look in the light of day. Besides, even if the angle highlights their collective rotundity, what's really awful about this picture are their "adult retard bagging groceries at the checkout" outfits and ridiculously bad hipster haircuts they are at least 10 years too old for. Can't blame the photographer for those.

Lol, I never really realized Joe was going for that hipster shag - I just assumed he was bringing his "(I also assumed) over-50 yo man remembering what was popular for girls from his early teen years" style sensibility, limited by his ability to grow or style hair. Oops.
I think somewhere around here there is a pic of him in his 20s or something, slim. Iirc, I thought he was an interesting-looking man, unconventional but appealing looks, of a sort - sort of a Heathcliff x Adrien Brody broody vibe, very charitably. But WOW he is an unattractive heavyset woman/larper.
Speaking of petty observations, how old is this pic of Mal, or has she made some drastic changes? This one puts her looking close to the weight in her Twitter avatar, which is about 1/2 of anything I've seen of her in recent times.
As far as her tenure on DP, frequent commenters/mods were enthusiastic about her at first. Emily was such a pill. Mal started out okay, but EVERYTHING was some kind of a polycule etiquette question, or anything plain vanilla ("my sister-in-law is mad I want to put raisins in the potato salad, but raisins are very special to me due to childhood trauma, so I now I don't want to go to the cookout, and she already said I'm uninvited; who's right??") became an exercise in trying to make everyone gay/trans, or pretzeling her response to make a point about gay/trans people.
And THEN she started removing gender references from all of the letters - it was deliberate social engineering and using a damn advice column to make a point [which was that people are stupid and conditioned into gender-based expectations and norms, which are evil and wrong] in a very clumsy and column-defeating way. And her advice was clearly from someone with zero social acumen (utterly autistic in that regard), and zero sense of actual etiquette, which she mainly appeared to lump into the long list of things she associates with her family and thus finds suffocating, abusive, and absurd. She ended up tiresome and exasperating, and the further she went on the transition journey, the worse her advice became and the more she completely missed the point at issue.
