I've never worked in a factory, how normal is this?

One dude working a lathe alone with nobody else around? Some of these vids have the guys spinning for forever.

When I worked at McDonald's as a teenager there was a boss watching everything I did. Am I to believe these companies have looser safety practices than a fast food restaurant?

If it takes three people to supervise the filling of the ice cream machine, shouldn't at least two people be there for the industrial lathe?

What scares me about it is just how quick it can go down, you're going about your daily routine, and one second later every bone in your body is broken. Just hope that at least it was quick for those poor bastards

Times are hard for a lot of people. If you can make it easier by working late and earning a bit extra, well, what's the worst that can happen?
Couple that with badly maintained kit and working practices that would give OSHA an embolism and you have every chance of becoming briefly famous on the grimmer parts of the internet.

I've used a great big manual lathe on my lonesome many times making 60lb dumbbells and other things. Freehanding brass knobs as if they were hardwood was fun too.

You've got to know your limits though and be damn careful to give that machine the goddamn respect it deserves. If you're working with something that's spinning with several hundred pounds of rotational mass going a thousand rippems and it doesn't scare the bejeezus out of you then you're asking for trouble.

During the week, I'm sometimes around industrial motors with exposed drive shafts (the safety cover is invariably missing, and we should probably fabricate a new out of sheet metal at some point), so seeing all these lathe videos over the past few years of this thread has made me be especially cautious when moving around those drive shafts.
