Mario Bros. Set to Jump to Big Screen in Movie Deal with Universal’s Illumination - Paging Movie Bob, Paging Movie Bob...

If anything, the criticism surrounding the new Mario movie reminds me so much of the criticism surrounding the first two Minions movies. Funny enough, they ended up being blockbuster hits that children and adults loved.
It's going to print money for sure, but I doubt it'll be memorable. The artists and musicians involved deserve a ton of praise for what they were able to make though, it's one of Illumination's best looking and sounding films, if not the best.

Pfff, OK, this is kinda funny, even if the person who made this is a faggot who has pronouns in his bio.

Thought this was kind of interesting. Someone made a video claiming that a Hollywood insider had info on the production of the movie:

TLDR is that the studio was originally going to have Peach run the show being the brains AND the brawn while Mario was a bumbling idiot. They were going to give it the He-man treatment. Nintendo didn't like how they wanted Mario to be downplayed and thought their idea of Peach was annoying so they demanded that they dial that back and have Mario have at least 50 percent screentime. Could be total bullshit, no names are given and it's all he said she said, but that same guy dropped his review of the movie today and he says that he thinks it was real because Peach had moments where she was being a girlboss but then it got watered down in a way where it seemed like the script was fighting with itself.

From his perspective, bad reviews are coming from people who really hated how
Bowser's motive with Peach is to marry her and that Peach actually seems romantically interested in Mario.
He said his kids loved it, adults he went with thought it was good, and on it's own it's a good movie but not for everyone. Criticism being that it's not really much of a story, it's more like watching a videogame without playing it.

Fucking lmao this is why only the fans seem pretty okay with the movie, because they know the history behind the characters. Critics don't and are just pissed about the tale as old as time.

I enjoyed the movie. Good references without going overboard (they even snuck in one to the 1986 anime movie), and nothing stupid or cringe. They decided to have Toad be the kid appeal character, so he might annoy some people. Voice acting was generally better than what I was expecting. I liked Jack Black's take on Bowser, made me think of the RPG games. Peach was fine. She kicked ass without them throwing in any "I don't need no man" crap that you see so often. Climax was exactly what I wanted.

I can see why some people are critical of the overall plot. The movie is mainly a celebration of Mario Bros so there aren't any shocking twists or curveballs. I'm sure the biggest criticism of this movie will be that they played it too safe, especially if the sequels decide to ramp things up.

Looking forward to a sequel, and maybe they'll make a DK spinoff.

What's with the anti-SJW's?

First they were complaining that the movie was woke because Peach isn't being a damsel, and now they're mad at critics for not liking the movie.
It's because they're contrarians by nature. If critics were lavishing this movie with praises they'd whine about how woke it was.

Haven’t read the last few pages of this thread to see what everyone else said, but I thought it was…

Fantastic. I had high hopes and it exceeded my expectations. I definitely recommend it for any Mario fans. And the voice acting was great overall, including Chris Pratt.

I thought every major aspect was good overall. The animation and music speak for themselves, but the story was also good, and I like everyone’s characterization with some minor exceptions. They do the whole fish-out-of-water thing with Mario, but they also emphasize that he’s a quick learner who never gives up, and even before entering the Mushroom Kingdom, he’s surprisingly agile by normal human standards. The whole “girlboss Peach” thing doesn’t happen. She’s highly competent, but it’s presented in an “I’ve been here my entire life so of course I know what I’m doing” way, and it only takes a single training montage for Mario to more or less get on her level, then he continues to improve after that. She never has any sort of “I don’t need no man” vibe, and she’s even receptive to Mario’s light flirting. For what it’s worth though, her personality would still be better suited for Daisy.

There are plenty of references - both basic and obscure, both in-your-face and in the background - but the movie doesn’t expect you to get all of them; it basically just expects that you’ve played a Mario game in the last 15 years. In particular, I’ll say that the kart racing segment doesn’t feel forced and actually fits into the story. Probably the most forced reference was Mario playing Kid Icarus on an NES early on (interesting how Nintendo games still exist here, just not Mario games).

I don’t have any major complaints, but if I had to pick some:
  • The original music is great, but the soundtrack relies a little too much on licensed music. There aren’t any bad choices per-se; it just feels weird hearing Take On Me and the Kill Bill theme in a Mario movie.
  • The blue luma from the trailer is kinda funny at first but overstays its welcome.
  • I’m not a fan of Bowser’s song, or songs in animated movies in general unless they’re really good. But hey, Jack Black does the best he can with what he’s given.
  • The sequel hook is just a Yoshi egg being left behind in Brooklyn. Kinda underwhelming; I was really expecting something Galaxy-related, especially with Peach saying she doesn’t know what world she’s from or how she ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Overall, great movie. I was pleasantly surprised.

Most SJWs and Anti-SJWs in this case are not real fans of video game lore such as Super Mario and Peach. They only like it as an excuse to make it more align wither beliefs with something as trivial as politics and gender. If anything, it’s more comparable to a lolcow like Hasan Piker thinking One Piece is “socialist”

Hasan really never has a good take ever.

Saw the movie earlier tonight and wanted to chime in with my thoughts.

Now, Mario was my favorite game series growing up so I may be pretty biased here but I thought the movie was great. Some of the negative reviews I saw going in had me worried so maybe my expectations were just low, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It's definitely a love letter to fans.

I knew about the licensed music going into it and while it does feel out of place, it didn't really take me out of the movie too much. Chris Pratt's voice was also fine. There were no moments when Mario spoke where I found myself thinking, "this is just Chris Pratt I'm listening to."

Peach didn't feel like a typical modern day "girlboss" character and comes across more as just a capable leader. There's none of that smug "I'm better than you" attitude that you see in all the strong female heroes these days and (spoilers I guess) Mario and Luigi are the ones to save the day in the end.

From what I can remember, none of the humor felt especially cringey. I was expecting Minions-tier, eye-rollingly bad humor but it was all fine. All in all a solid family movie that I wouldn't mind watching again to spot all the references and Easter eggs.

I have no excuse to watch a children's movie whose biggest accomplishment was being a decent adaptation, so while good on it for doing well I guess I am going to give it a pass. As long as children enjoy it and it's not teaching them to worship joggers or trannies.

I enjoyed it, though it's definitely a kids movie. The brothers were great, I honestly liked the Brooklyn accent and he did actually pull off the Italian accent when he tried.
Donkey Kong was alright but yeah it was Seth Rogen and the same goes for Bowzer very much being Jack Black.
Peach was fine, not too much of a problem but her bubbly personality was definitely watered down. No parasol in sight, no throwing random shit. The soundtrack was genuinely fun when it manages to escape the obligatory pop. The references were a lot of fun to spot and seemed naturally enough placed rather than forced "hey you remember the thing". in all, it was fine.
